Review: Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds @ Leeds First Direct Arena

Photo: Gary Mather / Live4ever Media

It’s a distraction. The thought which occurs, as 13,000 pairs of arms rise to greet ‘Champagne Supernova’, that this is the first time the city of Leeds has been serenaded with this particular modern British rock classic.

You see long before the First Direct Arena (destination #4 on Noel Gallagher ‘s latest UK tour last night), and putting festivals to one side, Oasis quickly outgrew what Leeds had to offer. A quick Google suggests after a gig at the Irish Centre just weeks before the release of ‘Definitely Maybe‘ in August 1994, as far as Yorkshire was concerned anyway the story of the band of a generation went on to be largely played out a few miles south in Sheffield, leaving this city behind as only a small footnote, a half-remembered gig played to barely three people and a barman long before they all sodded off down the road, around the world, and got rich and famous.

It seems right to start with ‘Champagne Supernova‘ regardless, as it’s the highlight of the evening. Not just because the near-twenty years of rock credentials make it the safest of live bets, but also because, perhaps for the first time, a well trodden Oasis classic here feels refreshed and nurtured in the hands of the High Flying Birds. This alternate, gentler Dr. Jekyll to the electric, solo-laden Hyde of years gone by only serves to emphasise the loves, the heartbreaks, the births, the deaths and the who knows how many other life changing moments it has soundtracked for those thousands here who are each recalling their own individual memories with each strum of Gallagher’s acoustic guitar.

Scotland's biggest music venue turned purple last night in tribute to Prince . The Hydro in Glasgow was bathed in purple light as rockstar Noel Gallagher played a gig there last night. The Oasis frontman, now with his own band High Flying Birds, paid his own tribute on stage by blasting out the Prince hit Let's Go Crazy.

Noel Gallagher talks Glasto, Roses and new Album

Noel Gallagher ran into The Stone Roses' Ian Brown at a supermarket last month and had a chat about new music and chocolate shower gel. NME asked him about what's going on with the Roses, his Glastonbury plans, and his next album...

Hey Noel. Are you playing Glastonbury this year?

“No. They're yet to ask or make a serious offer. But I am going. The line-up isn't exactly great though. Not talking about the headliners, but the entire thing… I think, ‘What am I going to see?’ ELO, they're good. I try to go every year with the missus. We didn't go last year so we're going this year and I have the time off.”

You revealed that The Stone Roses were 'blooming' last year, before the rumours really kicked in. What can you tell us about them now they've confirmed their 'glorious' new music?

“I am very excited, for them mainly. They're going to play some new songs. I bumped into Ian in a supermarket recently. He was buying chocolate-flavoured shower gel. This is not a joke. He leant and said ‘Have you tried this?' and I said of course I hadn't. He swears by it, says it's amazing. And before it turned into a photoshoot with everyone and their cameraphones, he was telling me how excited they are by it all. He said it was like they were making their first record again.”

So you're on the road till September, and then you're done?

“Yes, but I started this tour last March, it's been a long one. Tours get longer as the record industry dwindles. No one is going to give up their lifestyle because no one buys records, so you just tour for longer.”

What are you thinking about your new record? Next year?

“Well, I'm halfway through making a record now. I'll be back in during May when I have some time. Then I'll get it finished by Christmas, hopefully. That is absolutely best-case scenario, that it's done in time for Christmas and I'll be able to sit on my arse for three months at the start of 2017, watching Man City's glorious run to football domination.”

What can you tell us about the album?

“I don't like talking about it till it's finished, because many a record was bought and sold of people saying 'This is my Sgt Pepper' and then you hear it and you think, 'What the fuck are you on about?' But what I will say is that I am doing something different this time, to amuse myself – I am writing in the studio for the first time. As a rule I've not allowed myself to go in with any completed songs, so I am writing in there, it's happening all around me during the day.

“That process can be quite frustrating, but the results are speaking for themselves at the moment. Usually I'll go in, play a song, record an acoustic version of it and then I'll think of something and we'll head toward it. Everything we do is a forward motion toward that point. When you’re writing in the studio you don't know where you're going, so the flavour of it all can constantly shift. It's a bit chaotic but the end results are great so far.”

Will it be ready by this time next year, do you think?

“Hang on a fucking minute. Best case scenario is I get it finished this year and it's out this time next year, but best case scenario has a habit of going tits up and I won't finish it this year and I'll still be working on it this time next year. You never know.”
