      Know your Oasis

"I've been standing at the station, in need of education in the rain." Discuss. Noel and Liam Gallagher, the much disputed kings of Britpop and authors of that lyrical plea for education, have earned a place in the latest GCSE music syllabus.

From September pupils will be quizzed on Oasis and other Britpop staples such as Blur and Pulp in an attempt by examiners to make the qualification more contemporary and engaging for teenagers.
The move was questioned by supporters of more traditional music education who said that it would squeeze classical music out of the curriculum.

The cellist Julian Lloyd Webber, who has long campaigned for better classical music training in schools, said: "Pupils are exposed to this music already, so wouldn't it be more constructive to expose them to something they don't know? Children are missing out on a classical music education."

In the exam pupils will have to listen to excerpts of Britpop's greatest hits on headsets and answer questions on the structure of the songs, style of music, rhythm and what instruments are used.

Although 50% of the marks for the GCSE will still be awarded for classical music (between 1600 to 1899), the rest will reward knowledge of 20th century classical music, African and Asian music and an existing "contemporary music" section which will include the new Britpop module.

Previously pupils have studied contemporary music, but it was up to the school to decide what that included. A spokeswoman for Edexcel said the planned inclusion of Britpop from September was part of an attempt to "engage" pupils more in the subject.

"Teachers like teaching it, they can talk to students about music that's relevant to them. They both relate to this kind of music and it's more engaging," she said.
However, a Britpop expert also questioned whether the music would be testing enough for 16-year-old pupils.

John Harris, author of The Last Party: Britpop, Blair and the Demise of English Rock, said: "The problem that they may have is that from 1996 Britpop wasn't very interesting. It went back to the three chord trick, endless copying of the Beatles and the Who. By 1996 it had got very uninspired.

"Oasis were gloriously basic and made a virtue of it but God help the students in the classroom taking apart the music of Kula Shaker and Northern Uproar. There's nothing there."

Pupils preparing for their GCSEs now would have been six during the battle of Britpop, the 1995 race for a summer number one between Blur and Oasis, Harris pointed out.

"Britpop lost the lustre of cool three or four years ago. It's practically the music of their parents." He added: "It amazes me that this is on the curriculum. The same guy who taught me about Mozart would suddenly go on about Parallel Lines and Blondie. That stripped Debbie Harry of her cool right away."

Teachers will receive advice on how to include the new Britpop module in April.

Noel contributes to George Michael Documentary

A documentary which takes a candid look at the life of chart-topping singer George Michael will be shown at this year's Berlin Film Festival.
A Different Story will screen in the Panorama section of the festival, which runs from 10-20 February.

It features the singer talking about both his career and his personal life, from his days in Wham! through to more recent events. Michael will attend the festival to introduce the screening on 16 February. Director Southan Morris and executive producer Andy Stephens will also attend the festival.

    Unseen

The 93 minute film will see Michael discussing his early days in Wham! along with his later career, including his legal battles with record label Sony and his stance against the Iraq war and American politics.

It will also touch upon his turbulent personal life, including his arrest in a Beverly Hills park toilet in 1998 for "lewd behaviour", and the death of his boyfriend Anselmo Feleppa from Aids.

The film, which includes previously unseen footage of the singer also features contributions from Michael's former Wham! partner Andrew Ridgeley, as well as ex-Wham! backing singers Pepsi and Shirlie.

Other contributors include Sting, Mariah Carey, Elton John, Noel Gallagher, Geri Halliwell and Simon Cowell.

Liam and Noel to shake up The Brits

OASIS badboys LIAM and NOEL GALLAGHER have been invited to this year's (05) BRIT AWARDS in London to stir up trouble.

At past ceremonies Liam has simulated sex with his gong, abused late INXS rocker MICHAEL HUTCHENCE and was challenged to a fight by ANGELS singer ROBBIE WILLIAMS.

And organisers are hoping the LIVE FOREVER duo will create similar excitement at this year's event to abolish fears the current line-up is too passive. A source says, "CHRIS EVANS as a host has set the tone, but so far there's on one coming who can be relied on to act up. "We've love to get Liam and Noel to stir it a little.

"WILL YOUNG and NATASHA BEDINGFIELD are all very well, but they won't get smashed and cause a scene."

Best Manchester band of all time ?

Who is the best Manchester band of all time?
The recent debate about the greatest Scottish band of all time got us thinking. What other regions have such a rich and varied musical history that there would be several serious contenders for the title Best Band Ever From…?

While the Liverpool argument would almost certainly be finished by the phrase “Two words: The Beatles” and Ireland could only ever really come up with the answer “U2”, the Manchester scene has been so fertile over the years that the merest mention of it in the office prompted a near-riot.

After all, it’s the city that gave us The Buzzcocks, Joy Division, New Order, The Fall, The Smiths, The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays and Oasis – all bands guaranteed a place in any sane person’s list of the greatest bands of all time from anywhere. Just below them lurk the likes of Magazine, James, Electronic, Inspiral Carpets, Badly Drawn Boy and Doves, while extending the search parameters slightly would mean mentions for likes of The Verve and Elbow.

Manchester bands have always been there, whatever the prevailing musical mood. Pre-punk, they brought us The Hollies, Elkie Brooks, The Bee Gees, 10cc and Herman’s Hermits. In pop terms, they’re responsible for Take That, M People and Simply Red. The city’s dance heritage means it’s brought us 808 State, A Certain Ratio, A Guy Called Gerald, Manchester Uni students The Chemical Brothers and, lest we forget, MC Tunes. And if you like to keep things indie, you can opt for King Of The Slums, New FADS, The Durutti Column, The Man From Delmonte, Easterhouse, The Chameleons, Big Flame or all manner of arty oddballs.

And I haven’t even mentioned Northside, Paris Angels, Intastella, The Adventure Babies, The Wendys and all the other “Madchester” chancers, But that’s because they were, essentially, rubbish.
That aside, Manchester has never had much bad music to answer for. But who are the city’s favourite sons/daughters? Only the 6 Music massive can decide – your nominations, please…

Champagne Supernova on US hit show

Oasis classic to feature on The O.C

Oasis are to get a boost in the US - one of their biggest American hits is to be used on The O.C.

The Fox TV show will feature Champagne Supernova on its upcoming season finale - but not Oasis' original version.

American indie rockers Matt Pond PA have covered the song which in 1996 reached the US Top 40 and topped the Billboard Modern Tracks chart for five weeks.

Although Oasis' debut album 1994's Definitely Maybe went Gold in the US selling more than 700,000 to date the band's last album 2002's Heathen Chemistry only debuted at No. 23 in America before disappearing from the chart after a matter of weeks.

The band's sixth as-yet-untitled album due on May 16 has been partly recorded in Los Angeles.

      Bidding war to sign Oasis

OASIS are the target in a fierce bidding war that could net LIAM and NOEL GALLAGHER a massive £15million record deal. Major labels are fighting to sign the boys after their Sony contract runs out in the summer.

I hear that bosses from companies including EMI and V2 have been told to pull out all the stops to land the group. The competition may even lead Sony to come up with more cash to get the Gallaghers on board again. Oasis could eventually sign a three-album deal worth £15 million. A music industry insider told me: "Various record labels have been waiting patiently for the contract to end.

"Now it's a question of who puts the most money down on the table. "Everybody wants Liam and Noel. They are still an act who can sell millions of records."

The mad-fer-it brothers are currently mixing their next album in the studio with guitarist GEM ARCHER and bassist ANDY BELL. Noel said: "We recorded the album three times and it's come out really good.

"We've written 66 songs between the four of us. "We were going to do a double album but we didn't want to give Sony that much as it's our last album with them."

The boys will do a UK tour in the summer for which 330,000 tickets have already been sold.

Liam plays new album to .... Courtney Love

Courtney told NME magazine that there was one really good song. Liam had played back the whole album for her. " There's one song that was like a 60's garage rocker " she reported. She describes the song 'Boy with the Blues' as an excellent song, gnarly and fucked up using big guitar feed back - Northern , mangled , blues. The big sound comes from an old 1970s vintage soundboard explained The Village's CEO Jeff Greenberg, the same setup that helped JET crank out tunes on "Get Born". According to studio staff, Oasis were "sweet", "disciplined" and "some of the nicest people". For much more on the LA stay pick up the latest copy of NME at your local news stand.

      The latest album news

    Oasis snub Sony

British rockers OASIS have snubbed record label SONY by refusing to make their next LP a double album. The upcoming disc is the band's last with the music giants, who wanted to end their relationship on a high.

But the WONDERWALL hitmakers deliberately scrapped tracks intended for a second CD, because they don't want to give the company bonus material for free. Songwriter NOEL GALLAGHER says, "We've written 66 songs between the four of us and I think there's 12 on the album. "We were going to do a double album, but we don't want to give Sony too much, 'cos it's out last one, so f**k 'em."

    Liam on new album

Liam Gallagher has revealed that Oasis have completed work on their new as-yet-untitled album and are looking forward to causing agro on their upcoming UK tour, while rumours of a possible album title have surfaced.

Speaking at the UK Radio Aid day (January 17) Gallagher explained that Oasis’ album is nearly complete, save the final stages of studio mixing, and as soon as its ready he’s intending on causing as much grief as possible.
“We’re gonna finish this record off, master it, and go out there and do some gigs.” He explained, “And hopefully get up as many people’s noses as we can.”

“It sounds good, it sounds good man. Very nice. It’s sort of done now, we just need to get it mastered and then put it in the cover and away we go.”

After performing ‘Songbird’ with guitarist Gem, Gallagher also donated two items for the Radio Aid auction. Firstly a signed gold disc of the Oasis album ‘Be Here Now’ (“The best one,” Gallagher explained, “And there’s still some copies left so go and buy one...”) and a signed Fender guitar (which is currently attracting bids of over £4,5000).

Rumours have also started circulating that Oasis’ new Dave Sardy-produced album will be entitled ‘Don't Believe The Truth’, and the first single will be ‘I Stand Alone’ which should be released in late March.

Either way, Noel Gallagher himself has confirmed that the new record will definitely include tracks 'Guess God Thinks I'm Able', ’Part Of The Queue’ and ‘The Importance Of Being Idle’ and is pencilled in for release on May 16.

Oasis are heading out on a full UK tour later this year and according to Noel have "bagged some magnificent support bands" for the jaunt.

    Oasis full tour dates are:

Glasgow Hampden Park (June 29) SOLD OUT
Manchester, City of Manchester Stadium (June 30) SOLD OUT
Manchester, City of Manchester Stadium (July 2) SOLD OUT

      UK Radio Aid

LONDON, UK (V2/ Virgin Records) - On Monday 17th January 2005, competition and rivalry will be put aside as the UK's commercial radio stations come together for the first time to create UK Radio Aid.This unique national commercial radio station will specifically focus on raising money for the children affected by the Asian Tsunami.

That means that those listening to Classic FM and Virgin Radio will hear the same show. The idea is to drive people to the appeal fund and raise as much money as possible. All advertising during that time will go to the fund too. Just this alone will raise £1.5m. Potential audience could be 26.5m which could be biggest in modern history.Lots of artists are doing special things to provide content to be used in the 12 hours.

    Here's what we are doing:

Paul Weller: Paul has recorded a fantastic version of 'Come Together' the Beatles classic, and this will be the theme of the day.
The News of The World will run a phone line so you can listen to the song on Sunday and all money will go to the fund.

Stereophonics: Are providing a special live track that's being recorded this week, they will also do an interview on Monday. Nathan: Schools will be bidding for a performance from him for their assembly.

Thankyou to those artists for their time and contributions.

Other contributions are from Liam Gallagher, David Gray, Lemarr, Jamelia, Blue, Scissor Sisters, Sting, Keane and many more.
The DJ line up on the day includes Chris Evans, Johhny Vaughan, Davina McCall, Dermot O'Leary and.... Tony Blair. The Prime Minister will present the Breakfast Show for half an hour.

Gallagher gives up competing with young rockers

OASIS star NOEL GALLAGHER has given up competing with other musicians because he believes it's time for someone else to dominate the charts.

The DON'T LOOK BACK IN ANGER songwriter, 37, feels he has reached his sell-by-date when it comes to creating popular music - and wants to now to focus on making albums that satisfy his creative needs.

Gallagher, who is set to release new material in May (05) says, "There's no point in trying to compete with 24-year-old punk rockers.

"At this stage we should be making records for us.

"I don't know how to put this without enraging LIAM but it's other people's times now."

      Noel Gallagher To Quit London

Oasis superstar Noel Gallagher is moving out of London because he is sick and tired of standing in queues.

The Mancunian music legend says he is fed up with the amount of people in the capital and cannot stand waiting to be served.

He has even written a song about it, called Part Of The Queue, for the band's new album and told Radio 1's Jo Whiley: "I am getting quite fed up with London at the minute.

"When I moved to London about 12 years ago it blew me away but the novelty has worn off. It has become so overcrowded we have decided to up sticks and move out," he said.

Noel also revealed he has had another bust-up with his hell-raising brother Liam over which song should be released as the first single.

"There was an obvious first single but I was singing it and, after 12 years of Oasis, Liam thought that might sound a bit odd and people might think he had left the band," he explained.

Noel, who rates the new album, released on May 16, as his favourite of the last four, said: "Liam threw his cans out of the pram."

The songwriter lives in north London with girlfriend Sara McDonald but also has a country mansion in Chalfont St Giles, Buckinghamshire.

He bought the swish pad while married to his former wife Meg Mathews.

Noel spills the beans to Radio 1 on new LP

OASIS guitarist NOEL GALLAGHER has spoken out about the release of the band’s forthcoming studio album.

The as-yet-untitled LP will hit the shops on May 16 and features 12 songs written by Noel, singer Liam guitarist Gem Archer and bassist Andy Bell.

He said: "The finished album is my favourite one of the last four. Because we're all contributing to the songwriting there's a different feel to it. In fact the only songs that sound like Oasis are Andy Bell's funnily enough.

"I've been listening to a lot of Bob Dylan last year, Liam was obviously some guy who used to be in a band in Liverpool, Gem's a very rock and roll but not in a Jet way if you know what I mean. Andy's just sound like Oasis, which is great."

The band are currently approving the artwork for the release, which according to Noel "looks quite bleak and northern", but are yet to decide on the first single to be lifted from the LP.

"There was an obvious first single but I was singing it," Noel explained. "After 12 years of Oasis, Liam thought that might sound a bit odd, people might think he'd left the band. He threw his cans out the pram."

Talking to Radio 1, the guitarist gave fans an insight into his favourite tracks on the album and said that his brother’s songs are "very, very good".

"If I had to pick one it would be ’The Importance of Being Idle’," he revealed. "That sounds a bit like The Kinks, a bit like The La's, a bit Liverpudlian. I think it's got the best lyrics. I'm getting quite fed up with London at the minute, there's one song called ’Part Of The Queue’ which is about living in London and how you always seem to be queuing up for things in that city and how it almost … when I moved to London about 12 years ago it blew me away but the novelty has worn off. It's become so overcrowded over the last three or four years that we're upping sticks and moving."

Noel said: "The most interesting thing will be when you hear Liam's songs. They are very, very good. A song called ’Guess God Thinks I'm Able’. The end 30 seconds will blow you away. It's great."

Oasis will head out on a UK stadium tour in the summer, having sold over 330,000 tickets for the dates. The shows are Glasgow Hampden Park (June 29), City Of Manchester Stadium (30, July 2-3), Southampton Rose Bowl Stadium (6) and Milton Keynes National Bowl (9-10).

Noel said that the group have "bagged some magnificent support bands" for the tour, though did not reveal the exact names.
