      Liam in Beverly Hills

THERE are only a couple cans of Red Stripe and a few million quid separating LIAM GALLAGHER and TV’s best-loved scoundrel Frank Gallagher.

OASIS frontman Liam was out and about in Beverly Hills sporting the same shaggy hair as boozy, tax-dodging Shameless rogue Frank.

But although Liam is a little more clean-shaven than Frank, played by actor DAVID THRELFALL, the proud Manc pair have more in common than just their love of alcohol and cigarettes.

They both enjoy nowt more than to let fly with an abusive rant.

Which Liam will no doubt dish out if he hears that he is being compared with his fellow Manc scally.

Q Mag looks at Oasis' mark on Great British Music

Albums Of The '90sFour- Basildon boys conquered America, indie rock discovered ecstasy and Britpop reigned.

The 20th Century went out with a bang.

    Definitely Maybe - Oasis

Picking up where The Stone Roses left off, Definitely Maybe was the sound of provincial dreams becoming reality. "You're the outcast, you're the underclass, but you don't care, cos you're living fast," sang Liam Gallagher on Bring It On Down, articulating the realities of the downtrodden everywhere.

The biggest-selling debut album at that point, it proved that if you sang, "Tonight, I'm a rock 'n' roll star" loud enough, then you really could be.

Hail From: - Burnage, Greater Manchester
Most British Moment: Gallagher's brilliantly untutored drawl - one part John Lennon, one part John Lydon.
See Also: Stereophonics - Word Gets Around

    Other albums mentioned

    Violator - Depeche Mode
    Blue Lines - Massive Attack
    Screamadelcia - Primal Scream

Music For The Jilted Generation - Prodigy
    Dummy - Portishead
    OK Computer - Radiohead
    Urban Hymns - The Verve
    Different Class - Pulp

    Tracks Of The '90s

Enter Britpop, big ballads and - oh yes! Bollywood

    Live Forever - Oasis

Noel Gallagher penned this hymn to communality in 1991, a bleak year in John Major's recession - hit Britain, while working alone in a builders yard storeroom.

Live Forever forged a vision of transcendence that was both universal and homegrown: it's key line, "We'll see things they'll never see," was rooted in the great British phenomenon of ecstasy culture.

Most British Moment: The opening line, inspired by Gallagher's childhood memories of waiting around, bored, on his dad's allotment.

    Other tracks mentioned

    Angels - Robbie Williams
    Unfinished Symphany - Massive Attack
    Park Life - Blur
    Common People - Pulp
    Firestarter - The Prodigy

50 Years of Great British Music in Q

Still can’t quite believe it started with Cliff Richard.

The germ of an idea that begat the current issue, that is. It was whilst flicking through one of those chart reference books late last year that I noticed that the toothsome tennis fan had released his Move It single in 1958. Back then, perhaps still more remarkably, Sir Clifford was being hailed ‘The English Elvis’. The questionable accuracy of this description notwithstanding, Move It was, and remains, a sprightly, exuberant piece of rock’n’roll.

It was also a hugely significant one. For here, one could argue, was the starting point for popular music in Great Britain. No Cliff, then, no Beatles, Bowie, Smiths, Radiohead et al. Perhaps. Either way, we are now half a century on from this landmark, and that seemed as good a reason as any to mark it.

Bolstering this notion still further, and this year’s Brits nominees aside, British music continues to inspire and excite. Be it Arctic Monkeys or Bat For Lashes, Klaxons or Burial, the best of today’s British music is connected indelibly to the best of yesterday’s British music; so too those rather fine notions of marching to your own beat and following your own rules remain intact......

      Rock Rivals Cheese Role

If only Blur and Oasis had cracked open the Babybels in the Nineties, Britpop’s biggest feud might never have happened.

Now Blur bassist and dairy farmer Alex James, 39, thinks he’s got the perfect whey to bring them together.

The floppy-fringed legend has persuaded his former band’s singer Damon Albarn, 39, to team up with the Gallagher Brothers and create a special stilton for next month’s BRITs.

Elegantly wasted Alex has invited the Mancunian monobrows and old All-Bran to his Cotswolds cheese factory to start work on the smelly olive branch, which they will call A Country Roll (With It).

The bands split music fans by releasing their two singles Country House and Roll With It on the same day in 1995.

But the cheese will be an edible symbol of their new comradeship.

Our gourmand with the Jacobs Cream Crackers said: “Damon and Alex have always been enthusiastic about cheese – it was the glue that held Blur together for so long.

“But it wasn’t until recently that Alex discovered Liam, 35, and Noel, 40, shared their obsession.

“So he had the masterplan of creating something constructive through the medium of cheese, which would mark their maturity.”

He felt the Earl’s Court rock ceremony would be the perfect occasion to showcase their efforts and will offer the mouse food as a dessert alternative at the awards dinner.

Damon is a vegetarian and donated recipes, including Albarn’s Cheesy Garlic Potatoes, to The Vegetarian Society’s menu.

He can’t wait to head to the 200-acre farm to get to work with the other Big Cheeses.

As Alex explained: “From hard drugs to soft cheese! That’s me. From boozy, vegetarian vampire of the Groucho Club, to rural sober family man.

“It’s amazing, the friends you can make, just through cheese. People get very emotional about it.”

We’re sure their stilton will bring a tear to the eye.

      Icke-An't Believe Noel Is Fan

Bizzarre Lord NOEL GALLAGHER couldn’t be more different from workshy lump ROBBIE WILLIAMS.

But they share one thing in common - an admiration for crackpot preacher DAVID ICKE.

Earlier this week I revealed Robbie has been hanging out with Icke in LA and the pair have been discussing their shared interest in aliens.

But I nearly passed out when I heard Noel once went to a marathon seven-hour seminar to hear the former footie-goalie- turned-pundit talk about our political leaders being lizards.

Noel was snapped out with missus SARA MACDONALD on Thursday night after a civilised ale with brother LIAM at the Met Bar.

A source said: “Noel and a few pals went to Brixton Academy a few years back to see Icke.

"Noel’s a fan of his crackpot antics and wanted to hear him in the flesh explaining his oddball theories.

"He even got an invite back stage for a cup of tea. He had T-shirts made up for his pals with the Nike swoosh and the word ‘Icke’ on the front.”

I imagine Lord Noel will be burning his Icke books when he finds out he’s pals with Rob the nob.

'Heathen Chemistry' Recording Studio For Sale

The recording studio where Oasis recorded their ‘Heathen Chemistry’ album in 2002, is being sold.

Wheeler End Studio had been on long-term let to Noel Gallagher, who had invited friends such as The Coral and Ian Brown to record there.

The studio, located in Buckinghamshire, has also been used by the likes of George Harrison, Robbie Williams and Paul Weller.

The studio has a price tag of £3.9 million and the owner, Suzanne Lee, former wife of blues rocker Alvin Lee, is hoping a buyer will buy it to and continue to put it to recording use.

"After 27 years of running the studio, I am incredibly attached to Wheeler End, so selling it hasn’t been the easiest of decisions to make,” she said.

“But the time has come to move on. What I want more than anything else is to see it sold to someone who intends to carry on using it as a recording studio and to preserve its amazing heritage and atmosphere.”

      Studio Leaks Oasis Album Info

Details of the new Oasis album, which is currently being mixed in LA, have leaked.

According to a studio spy, the follow-up to Don't Believe The Truth opens with a Liam Gallagher-penned acoustic track 'Boy With The Blues', tipped to be the first single.

As promised the boys have gone seriously orchestral on the rest of the record, particularly on 'To Love' sung by 40 year-old Noel and two more efforts from Liam, 35 'Guess I'm Out Of Time' and 'Evil Eye'.

But the set highlight promises to be Noel's epic 'I Wanna Live In A Dream With My Record Machine', complete with three guitar solos.

      Oasis VS Blur: Part Deux

BRITPOP rivals Oasis and Blur are set to go head to head again in a sensational telly special.

Beeb bosses are plotting a reunion clash between the two bands as part of a special episode of hit quiz show The Weakest Link.

More than a decade after their feud at the height of Britpop, telly chiefs are in talks with Gallagher brothers Liam, 35, and Noel, 40, and their old chart rivals Damon Albarn, 40, and Alex James, 39.

And they want to draft in a string of other top names for the pop music showdown.

Their hit-list includes Suede’s Brett Anderson, 40, Elastica’s Justine Frischmann, 38, Pulp’s Jarvis Cocker, 44, and Manic Street Preachers frontman James Dean Bradfield, 38.

It’s been over a decade since this lot have even been in the same room as each other A BBC source

Also wanted are Shed Seven star Rick Witter, 35, and Gaz Coombes, 31, from Supergrass. A BBC source said the show was in the early planning stages, but added: “If we can pull this off it would be unbelievable.

“It’s been over a decade since this lot have even been in the same room as each other.

“To see them lined up next to one another with Queen of Mean Anne Robinson giving them stick would be amazing. It’s sure to ignite old rivalries, which would be TV gold.

“Noel admits he’s a Weakest Link fan.”

The Britpop war erupted in 1995, with Oasis releasing the single Roll With It and Blur issuing Country House on the same day.

Oasis are keeping the exact details of their seventh studio album under wraps at present, but NME has gained a exclusive peek into their sessions at London's famous Abbey Road studios.

We also spoke to Noel Gallagher at Led Zepplin's o2 show last December and, although he didn't give too much away, he confirmed the album is finished and is currently being mixed. It seems it will be released in spring with a summer stadium tour likely to follow - but what will it sound like?

"We've been focusing on grooves more this time," the guitarist declared in October, also claiming that, lyrically, he's "been revisiting some of my more psychedelic trips as a younger man - because I remember them all, you see! and putting them to music."

This fits with the plan Noel told NME about last January, saying he wanted the record to be "absolutely colossal" and that he'd like it to feature "a 100-piece orchestra, choirs and all that stuff".

Among the many songs that could included are 'I Wanna Live In A Dream Machine', the track 'Stop The Clocks' (described by Noel as "the best thing I've ever written") and his brother's 'The Boy With The Blues', which the guitarist says could be "like a gospel track or something".

Liam Gallagher has been more forthcoming with details than his brother. Speaking in November, he explained: "All the songs are written, this record's gonna be f**kin' rockin'.

There's no acoustic on it, man. We rehearsed about 10 tunes before coming in. Three are mine. Some are Noel's, some are Gem Archer's, some are Andy Bell's.We're there for a long time, so we just keep picking 'em off the tree, man.

Some are sounding really f**kin' heavy, and then we're picking some out and you go, 'Well, that doesn't sit with that right,' So we just keep moving about. We've got plenty of songs. We're not going to get bored".

O2 target Oasis , Coldplay and U2 for Summer Gigs

The O2 arena's venue promoters have revealed that they are targeting Oasis, Coldplay and U2 for summer concerts.

European Chief Executive of AEG David Campbell has suggested the trio of acts would be among his "dream bookings" for the venue.

All three acts have been contacted about a possible string of dates or residency at the former Millennium Dome, claims The London Paper.

Coldplay, Oasis and U2 are all expected to release new albums in 2008.

Fall Out Boy Taking A Cue From Oasis

Fall Out Boy Taking A Cue From Oasis On Upcoming (Non-Folk) Album

Pete Wentz doesn't want to talk about Fall Out Boy's new album — because Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke told him not to.

"Whenever you talk about your album this far out, or any distance out, whatever you say — I watched Thom Yorke talk about this — whatever the first couple of things you say, or the first person who hears the record says, is really the only thing that ends up out there with the record," Wentz said. "We were like, 'Oh, yeah, it's a little more folky,' and people were like, 'They've got a folk album coming out!' and that's not really the case."

He's making light of a situation that arose last year, when he and frontman Patrick Stump did an interview about their appreciation for the storytelling aspects of folk music, which somehow got twisted into "Fall Out Boy are recording a folk album," which meant that they spent the remainder of 2007 telling anyone who'd listen that they weren't actually doing so.

So while he's not willing to talk at great lengths about the follow-up to Infinity on High, he wasn't about to send our intrepid reporter away empty-handed. So he offered up the following nugget, sure to be misconstrued by NME in the very near future.

"I think the one aspect we're bringing to the record is something Oasis did a lot, where they'd play these really distorted, awesome riffs, and they'd have an acoustic guitar over the entire song," he said. "It kind of brings this great sense of melody and softness to a song that would otherwise just totally be a rock song. And I want to go in a completely different direction with the lyrics, but we'll see if that happens."

So just when can fans expect to hear these Brit-pop-inspired tunes? Well, Wentz really doesn't have any idea. Right now, he and the rest of Fall Out Boy are relaxing and relishing some much-needed time off. Plus, he's not even completely sure that the songs he's talking about will make the final cut. After all, they're just a few out of many the band has written lately.

"We're just writing songs and goofing around and trying to enjoy time off," Wentz laughed. "But we're still working. We have, like, 50 new songs, and two of them are probably good."

      Oaisis or Mirage ?

"Flight of the Conchords" man offers to manage Oasis

Plus 'Murray Hewitt' gives his verdict on Pete and Amy ...

The Flight Of The Conchords manager has spoken exclusively to NME.COM, offering his services to some of indie’s biggest stars.

While the band are currently working on a new album and TV series, (the first season is out on DVD now) actor Rhys Darby, who plays their manager Murray Hewitt, has been keeping busy with a few projects.

“It’s kind of been a crazy rocket ride to Hollywood,” he explained from the set of film 'Yes Man'. “It was very daunting my first week here, on the set as all my scenes are with Jim Carey. It’s only really my second onscreen role after Conchords!”

In the meantime, then, we thought we would have a chat with Flight Of The Conchords' hapless manager Murray Hewitt, and got his advice for three of rock’s biggest management handfuls.

Here are "Murray's" pearls of music management wisdom:

    Pete Doherty
“With Pete Doherty, first of all I’d set him down and tell him he’s going to have to tidy himself up. He’s going to have to get his haircut. He’s going to too many parties, I know the rock 'n' roll lifestyle will lead you to a lot of parties but he needs to stop. Also, have you ever thought of drinking water? What you want to do is have beer in your hand when people are looking at you, but you don’t need to drink it. The image is more important, get the look but then drink water. That’s what the Conchords do. You’re hanging out with the wrong people, Pete, some of these people, they’re trash. You won’t succeed with a lot of these types, try measuring yourself on The Beatles.”

    Oasis

“They’ve modelled themselves on a nice respectable band The Beatles, they got that right, but I’m not sure about the name. What does it mean? Basically it’s a small pond of water in a dry desert. OK, it’s not too bad, but you could do better? You two guys have got to get on though. You keep arguing, it’s not good. From the experience I’ve had I don’t think brothers is going to work. I might have to split you up into two different bands to be fair. One can be Oasis and the other one can be Mirage - that’s another desert name.”

    Amy Winehouse

“Oh my god! For a start it’s all in the surname. You want to change that. A lot of people hear that, they can tell she’s off the rails. Why not change it to Amy Music-fun? People will see that’s what you’re into, fun, but mainly music, not just staying at home and drinking wine! You need to something with your look. Eat more! What we should do is only have lunch meetings, we’ll have a good feed and then we’ll talk about the people you’re hanging out with. She knows that Pete Doherty guy? It’s the same advice again really: model yourself on a nice pop band! Perhaps Amy could try The Kinks this time, and for heaven’s sake do something with your hair! It’s ridiculous.”

Oasis Mixing New Album This Week

Noel Gallagher and co about to finish seventh record

Oasis are reportedly mixing their latest album in Los Angeles this week, it has been reported today (January 9).

According to a report on US radio station G Rock, the band’s seventh studio record is being mixed after Oasis finished recording sessions at London’s Abbey Road Studios late last year.

The band also recorded and mixed part of their last album, 2005's 'Don't Believe The Truth', in the city with producer Dave Sardy, who is based there.

At the time Noel Gallagher told NME.COM he had been initially reluctant to work in Los Angeles, but eventually enjoyed the experience.

“I’ve got to say I was bit nervous going to America because it’s a bit like being in a little spaceship going into the Death Star in ’Star Wars’ when you go over to that country, especially Los Angeles,” he declared. “I was like ‘Fucking hell, there’s loads of idiots with long hair. I don’t want to meet any rappers or anyone in a rock band’ but once we got over the initial hurdle it was great. We were in our own little bubble.”

The album is expected to be released in the spring. However, the band have yet to confirm any details.

      Versus Cancer Concert DVDs

Production company UK One is set to bring New Order, Paul Weller, Ian Brown, Noel Gallagher and The Charlatans to the small screen, after winning the job of working on the Versus Cancer concert DVDs.

Ian Brown does his thingUK One will provide the editing for the last two concerts prior to their DVD release and televisual broadcast. The firm was the only North West company in the final running for the job.

Steven Chapman told How-Do that his team are looking to maximise the amount they can help Versus Cancer raise from the release, and as such took “the unusual step of helping the charity get a broadcaster and an ad-funder/sponsor.”

He added: “Fortunately with such major names attached, there are already several networks interested in viewing the footage. There are also a great number of sponsors looking to get involved, although we're still looking at further possibilities.”

UK One is also known for its endeavours in helping to bring The Tube back to TV, and staging the show in Manchester.

Cancer charity Versus Cancer, which is spearheaded by Andy Rourke of The Smiths, has so far raised over quarter of a million pounds to help fight the disease.

      Oasis Back on the Piste

NOEL and Liam Gallagher enjoyed a booze bender during a Swiss ski trip and proved they’re still party animals.

And there seemed no stopping the Oasis boys as they got stuck into beverages at a bar in the Champery resort.

Both Noel, 40, and Liam, 35, had enjoyed an afternoon on the piste before strolling into Mitchells bar.

An onlooker said: “Noel and Liam arrived early evening and ordered a couple of wraps and some chips. “They seemed to be with family and friends and they were all having a hoot.

“Both Noel and Liam wiled away the hours playing cards with their party and one of their mates was singing some Oasis songs.

“They all moved on to some other apres-ski bars, grabbed a bite to eat and then persuaded the bar owners to stay open late. “The party was still going strong by 4am and the lads led the way as their friends belted out a version of Supersonic.”

The source added: “The boys had downed pints of Guinness as well as several margaritas.

“Champery is sleepy so villagers were stunned when some bars stayed open until four just for the Gallaghers.

“Owners heard they were in town so they were all quite keen to entice them both to stay and drink at their haunts.”

And who can blame them? After all, Noel and Liam are one of a kind.

The Manc rock lords more than deserved to let their locks down after spending last month at a north London studio where they worked all day and night on their seventh album.

Liam, who has three children, and Noel, who has two, were famed for their love of partying in the 90s. So it’s good to know they still have the taste for Cigarettes And Alcohol.

And they can seriously make up for our January detox malarkey, which is driving us mad.

The Big Names are back for 2008

The big guns are out and, if they’re not firing blanks, 2008 should be one of the great years for new music.

OASIS: The light blue side of Manchester has plenty to celebrate with Sven’s boys flying high . . . and the prospect of a seventh Oasis album. Noel, Liam and Co began recording it on November 5 with Don’t Believe The Truth producer Dave Sardy. The buzz? Sonic fireworks.

U2: The band have been writing and recording in France and Morocco. With Joshua Tree pair Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois back in tow, the follow-up to 2004’s How To Dismantle An Atom Bomb might be a U2 masterpiece.

COLDPLAY: Eno is also producer on Coldplay’s fourth album, rumoured to be called Prospekt. It’s thought to be a concise album and the one “people will remember them by”. Among song titles are Famous Old Painters, Glass Of Water, Poppy Fields and Leftrightleftrightleft.

DIDO: It’s been a long wait for a new long player by the mega-selling Dido Florian Cloud de Bounevialle Armstrong. Her first since 2003’s Life For Rent has been delayed by the death of her father and is said to be inspired by drives down the west coast of America. Expected songs include Look No Further, Never Want To Say It’s Love and Grafton Street. Sony BMG’s big hope for 2008.

MADONNA: Expect a hip-hop flavoured album from Her Madge. The eleventh and last studio album for Warner lines up the stellar talents of Timbaland and Pharell Williams. First single is probably 4 Minutes To Save The World, with Justin Timberlake.

GREEN DAY: Few records made such an impact in the Noughties as Green Day’s 2004 magnum opus American Idiot. Singer Billie Joe Armstrong has written around 45 songs to be considered for their follow-up eighth studio album.

KASABIAN: The lovable Leicester lot are pretty excited about their third album. Singer Tom Meighan has enthused: “It’s gonna be progressive and it sounds like an owl at night-time.” Guitarist Serge Pizzorno revealed he’s written a song inspired by Syd Barrett.

RAZORLIGHT: If it’s as big as Johnny Borrell’s ego, Razorlight’s third album will be an all-conquering, multi-platinum classic. Johnny went into the studio with the band on October 29 to start writing it. SFTW approves. Rock needs characters like him.

KEANE: Tom Chaplin has popped into rehab since 2006’s Under The Iron Sea but things are looking up for Keane’s next record. Tom revealed that 15 songs have been written and communication between band members has improved.

R.E.M.: Even Stipe, Buck and Mills weren’t overjoyed with 2004’s Around The Sun but signs are that the Jacknife Lee-produced Accelerate (out March 31) is a return to form. Confirmed tracks include Until The Day Is Done, Living Well Is The Best Revenge, Mr Richards and I’m Gonna DJ (a set regular on their 2004/05 world tour.) Stipe says the guitar-driven LP is “the fastest we’ve made in 20 years”.

THE VERVE: Of all the reunions, it’s the ones that deliver new product that count the most. Richard Ashcroft and Co’s first album since 1997’s towering Urban Hymns is one of 2008’s most anticipated musical events. Bassist Simon Jones said songs are called Sit And Wonder, Judas, Appalachian Springs, Mona Lisa and Rather Be.

THE FRATELLIS: The Scots rockers won Best Breakthrough Act at the 2007 Brits for debut Costello Music. In November, they booked rehearsal space to start the second album.

HOT CHIP: One of the year’s first big-hitters is Made In The Dark, the rockier third album by London’s electro-popsters. Single Shake A Fist served notice of a bolder and brighter approach.

THE RACONTEURS: Jack White thinks of The Raconteurs as way more than a side project. He says the band’s sophomore album is “very different” from Broken Boy Soldiers and that it’s “coming out great”. Recorded at Blackbird Studios in Jack’s adopted home of Nashville.

THE KOOKS: Brighton’s hugely popular indie act have once again teamed up with producer Tony Hoffer. They’ve named the new album Konk after the London studios where they recorded it. Singer Luke Pritchard promises a “dynamic, modern yet warm and roots-based sound”.

THE FEELING: We’ve got a “feeling” that the soft-rockers will sidestep the second album wobbles of many a band. Join With Us arrives mid-February and looks set to build on the success of 12 Stops And Home. First single: I Thought It Was Over.

FRANZ FERDINAND: Let’s hope the Scottish art rockers aren’t governed by the law of diminishing returns. Singer Alex Kapranos has revealed a secret weapon . . . “an old Russian synthesiser built from spare parts in the Cold War”. One new song is Lucid Dreams.

THE STREETS: Mike Skinner recently posted a new song on his MySpace reminiscent of his Original Pirate Material days before replacing it with his blinding cover of Sir Elt’s Your Song. Don’t write off a singular talent.

ANTONY & THE JOHNSONS: Few will forget Antony’s hauntingly beautiful delivery on the Mercury-winning I Am A Bird Now. New album The Crying Light arrives early summer.

ROBBIE WILLIAMS: Wouldn’t we all just love a return to form by Robbie, particular after the decidedly patchy Rudebox and the success of his old muckers Take That. His next album is rumoured to feature songwriting partner Guy Chambers and has been slated for an autumn release.

      'Mancs United' for Charity Gig

LIAM GALLAGHER is set to front a Manchester supergroup in a “mad fer it” live show.

The OASIS singer will share the stage with a whole host of other rock ’n’ roll legends from the city at the Manchester V Cancer charity concert next month.

He will perform joint vocals with former STONE ROSES’ singer IAN BROWN, and the pair will be backed by trio FREEBASS who consist of ex-SMITHS star ANDY ROURKE, NEW ORDER’s PETER HOOK and MANI from PRIMAL SCREAM.

Freebass has been a side project of the three bass legends for a few years.

But the show at the MEN Arena on February 23 will be the group’s first proper concert.

City fan Liam won’t be impressed, but I have dubbed the group “Manchester United”.

A source told me: “Liam and Ian Brown will join Freebass on vocals in their first full live show.

“It will be one of the musical events of the year. Manc music fans will be in rock ’n’ roll heaven.”

Freebass have been quietly working on an album for the last year.

All three of the founder members are from the Manchester area and play the bass guitar on the material.

For vocals in the studio they have called in favours from Liam and Ian as well as CHARLATANS singer TIM BURGESS and Primal Scream frontman BOBBY GILLESPIE.

If the Cancer show is a success they could follow it up by hitting the festivals in the summer.

Rourke organises the charity show, which was one of my gigs of the year in 2007.

And with Gallagher and Brown signed up for the performance, this year’s gig could be even better than last time. Other acts being lined up to perform include THE VERVE, JAMES, INSPIRAL CARPETS and HAPPY MONDAYS.

Rourke revealed: “This year’s gig is going to be talked about for years to come.

“We’ve got some of the biggest bands of the moment lined up as well as some legendary acts.”

Bring it on... Visit www.versuscancer.org for more information.

      Oasis Album Preview From Q

    2008 Preview

Oasis: The Pitch - Everything turned up to II. Noel Gallagher is living out his Burt Bacharach fantasies, talking up the successor to 2005's career - steadying Don't Believe The Truth as "colossal" and "60s sounding", complete with "100-piece orchestras and choirs". One song, I Wanna Live In A Dream In My Record Machine is a 10-minute psychedelic epic.

Producer Dave Sardy is back on board for sessions at London's Abbey Road studios. But while the band may be label-less, don't expect them to do a Radiohead - Liam Gallagher has said they'll give away the album "over my dead body".

We Say - The last album was a return to form. Gallagher senior has his
    confidence back.

      Q Magazine's Guide to 2008

When Q first began compiling details of the releases and events that would shape 2008, it felt very familiar. On the horizon, then, are new albums from such established acts as Coldplay, U2, Oasis R.E.M., The Verve, Green Day, Madonna, Metallica and more. In the case of Coldplay and U2, at least, the scent of re-invention is in the air. As for R.E.M., whose forthcoming album I’ve heard, it looks like very much being a case of a renewed sense of focus and a return to former glories.

Noel Gallagher crowned "Lord of Bizarre" by the Sun

STEP forward NOEL GALLAGHER - the first ever Lord Of Bizarre.

It is a pleasure to give the chief his new moniker after a spectacular 2007.

His sell-out solo gigs for charity were class, he has penned a new OASIS album - and he found time to spawn first son DONOVAN with stunning missus SARA MACDONALD, and so giving the country a future king of rock ’n’ roll.

The Manc legend signed off his year at Edinburgh’s Hogmanay celebrations with a guest slot alongside his young protegés KASABIAN.

The Leicester lads proved they were last year’s best live act by a country mile, grabbing the boozed- up Scots crowd by the scruff of the neck and hauling them into 2008.

TOM MEIGHAN and SERGE PIZZORNO brought Noel on stage for the last three songs - and he stirred the crowd into a frenzy. After the show I handed Noel his award and the rocker, with a Magners in his hand, told me: “I’ll accept this and will celebrate it accordingly!”

Former Bizarre Caner Of The Year Noel then passed that honour on to Kasabian guitarist, songwriter and general all-round legend Serge as they headed off for a session to be proud of.

I was lucky enough to be part of Noel and Serge’s mother of all tear-ups drink for drink - and let me tell you, these lads don’t mess about.

Our night finished in the Balmoral Hotel’s presidential suite at 8.30AM - after complaints from other guests about the iPod DJ-ing led by Noel’s missus.

Sore heeds all round at the start of 2008 - just what you’d want from the Bizarre Caner Of The Year - old and new.

But Noel had a lot of good work to celebrate. He raised a hefty wedge for charity at the start of the year by playing the MEN for Manchester Versus Cancer and London’s Albert Hall for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

He performed his first gig in Russia and crowned it with a vodka session that would have turned even KEEF RICHARDS green.

On top of all that he lit up various telly shows and films - BBC2’s docu series Seven Ages Of Rock and The Who flick included - with his unique, rapier-like wit.

His Kasabian pals are now huge too - unquestionably a headline act for any festival and one of the few highlights of last year’s overcrowded scene.

Noel Gallagher Joins Kasabian Onstage In Edinburgh

Almost 120,000 revellers welcomed in 2008 at Hogmanay bashes in Edinburgh and Glasgow as Scots showed the world how to party last night.

People flocked from all around the world to Edinburgh for Europe’s biggest party – and the celebrations were spectacular.

Gales and rain forced last year’s event in the capital to be cancelled.

But there were no hitches last night and organisers hailed the bash, which drew 100,000 people, a huge success.

Other street carnivals around the country – including in Glasgow, where celebrations were washed out last year too – were also a hit, with more than 15,000 packing the city centre.

Rockers Kasabian headlined the Edinburgh party with Calvin Harris and Idlewild.

There had been disappointment when X Factor winner Leon Jackson had to pull out of the Concert in the Gardens with tonsillitis.

But Oasis star Noel Gallagher soon raised spirits by joining Kasabian on stage for two songs, before leading the countdown to the bells. Kasabian also dedicated one of their songs to tragic footballer Phil O’Donnell.

Crowds who had flocked to the capital also enjoyed the traditional gunfire on the ramparts of Edinburgh Castle at the stroke of midnight before sensational fireworks lit the sky.
