Noel's guitar shines on Who live album

The Who: Live at Royal Albert Hall CD set

    Rating : 3 stars

A three-disc set of the band's 2000 anti-cancer campaign fundraiser with special guests including Noel Gallagher from Oasis, Bryan Adams and Eddie Vedder.

It was one of the last concerts for the band with bassist John Entwhistle who died on the eve of last year's US tour.

The album doesn't break any new ground but it is worth having for the versions of Who classics such as Won't Get Fooled Again, featuring Gallagher on guitar, Bryan Adams' vocals on Behind Blue Eyes, and Kelly Jones from the Stereophonics taking the lead vocals on Substitute.

      Liam celebrates with family.

LIAM 'mad fer it' GALLAGHER marked his 31st birthday by inviting his family round – for jelly and ice cream. Fiancée NICOLE APPLETON brought balloons and family members including Liam’s lesser-known brother PAUL and their mum PEGGY turned up at the house in London's posh Hampstead.

Then NOEL arrived with his little girl ANAIS, who played with Liam's lads GENE and LENNON. Who would have thought it? Not so long ago the OASIS frontman would have celebrated with an all-night boozefest and a punch-up.

Britpop pioneer gets Radio 1 show

McGee hosts the show on Thursday night
Alan McGee, the record label boss who discovered Oasis, is hosting a BBC Radio 1 show to showcase unsigned bands. The show, which goes out on Thursday night as part of the One World strand, will feature mostly unsigned talent. "The British music scene at the moment is as good as it was in 1990 or 1991," McGee said.

He added bands were finding it hard to get deals because the music industry was preoccupied with digital piracy. McGee, whose Creation label was home to bands such as Oasis, Teenage Fanclub, Primal Scream and Super Furry Animals, now runs the Poptones record label.

    'World class'

"Most of the bands I feature on the show are either unsigned or they are on their first record," he told BBC News Online. "There are a lot of great bands out there at the moment, but they are under the radar. The record companies have lost control through digital distribution." But McGee said this may help the new crop of bands stay the distance. "Instead of in 1996 or 1997, when you could get signed if you dressed up in a mod suit, to get signed now you have to be world class. That's a good thing."

McGee said he did not have the time to become the "new Jo Whiley" but he was interested in seeing if there could be more episodes of the show.

      Missing Oasis...

We've just been on the phone to Guigsy, ex-Oasis, who's premiering a reggae band called the Nazarites - playing In The City in the Late Room at 11pm in Manchester tonight, and we spoke to him about his involvement with them, his feelings about Oasis, as well as his involvement with The Band Agency.

So Paul 'Guigsy' McGuigan, why are you at In the City?

"I've got a band playing tonight - the Nazarites."

    You're playing again?

"I'm not, I'm producing and arranging. I've known the guys for ages, so on and off I've been working with them for about a year now. I've just been recording an album in the studio really. It'll be a good laugh actually. A couple of guys, a couple of me ol' mates'll be coming down."

    Who's that then?

"John Squire, and Mani and all that lot. The usual suspects for a nice drink and a bit of reggae."

Guisgy picked the band up when they were an instrumental three piece, and managed to turn the bass player into the singer, and expand them to a five piece. He says he doesn't want to sign them to his own label "because they're me mates and I don't want to be the boss"

The Nazarites, who Guigsy describes as "exceptional musicians" play their first In the City gig, and only their second gig or third gig ever.

Concerning Oasis we asked Guigsy if he'd been playing himself at all lately, since leaving the band four years ago.

"Not really," he admitted, "I liked being in a band, I can't see it anyway, not in a band as good as that [Oasis]."

He's played in a few bands but admits "it'll never be Oasis and it's not me mates, that I grew up with, so yeah, you know..."

Err, do you think Oasis are Oasis now?
"Yeah, course I do" he says matter of factly.

And are they as good as Oasis were when you were in the band?

"I get that question asked to me all the time - it's impossible to tell. I can't tell you if what we was doing was any good. It's all part of you so...you can't be objective about it, in anyway. I was out with Andy Bell a few months ago in Sweden. I get on with all the guys. He's a lovely man, he's nice."

He added: "I actually know they're working at the moment and I think the new album might be quite stunning."

Have you heard any of it yet?

"No, not all of it, just some bits and pieces, but I...you know what I mean. Sometimes it takes a bit of time to get into the roles, but they've had a few years now..."

And does he miss the buzz of it?

"I miss me mates," he says matter of factly, "more than anything else. That's it. I mean the gigs were brilliant and everything. When you're with your mates, someone gives you licence not to do proper work and you're kind of at school for the rest of your life, you know, drinking and getting up to mischief. I miss my boys and having a crack. I was never particularly looking for the limelight that much, it was never something that interested me. When we were in a band with no money it was great. When we did have money it just meant we could do shitloads more things...If you're in a band to try and make money you might as well forget it. Because it's all very few people who actually make money in the end. But if you're in a band for love, then you're off and running..."

Guigsy has also joined forces with The Band Agency (part of the National Music Network) which is a non-profit, volunteer organisation giving advice and support to new and unsigned bands. They will be taking over the Urbis building in Manchester’s city centre for 2 days of free advice, showcases, panel discussions and demo reviews from Sept 12-14 as part of In The City. This event is completely free and open to all new bands, musicians and general public wanting advice about the music industry, from legal issues, to how to produce the best demo.

He was so much nicer than that Coxon knob'ead - TALK!

      Liam takes the plunge ...again

EVERYBODY clear your throats and give it up for the return of LIAM GALLAGHER. And it wasn’t just the spit that was hitting the floor, Liam joined it soon afterwards. I was worried the OASIS star had hung up his “mad fer it” boots for good, replacing them with slippers and a pipe. I well remember that sad day when wildman Liam was spotted with fiancée NICOLE APPLETON at the Ideal Home Exhibition.

But here he is again, flying the phlegm for rock’s bad boys. Liam donned his best anorak for a night on the town in, er, a West End wine bar. A wine bar’s not quite rock ’n’ roll but, hey, it’s a start.

    Wonder-fall ... Liam's back on form

Hats off to our kid – it takes a lot of shandies to fall over an empty pavement with nothing in your way, as my pictures show. Not that I’d know, obviously. Note to manufactured popettes: This is how you should behave.

Chemical Brothers Hits album features "Setting Sun" with Noel

The Chemical Brothers are releasing a career-spanning hits collection, Singles 93-03, and like kids with something - anything - better to do, they are finding the associated promotional duties every bit as punishing as Friday-afternoon detention. Rowlands and Simons are not the sparkiest of interviewees, and to judge by their meandering sentences and heavily pregnant pauses, they'd both give their crinkled vintage T-shirts not to be here. But the knob-twiddlers are not without enthusiasm. They just channel every ounce of it into what really drives them: making groundbreaking, fired-up anthems. It's a passion that the Southerners Simons and Rowlands have been obsessed with since their Manchester Poly days, when, as students, they were seduced by the acid-house glory days of Manchester's legendary Hacienda club.

The album maps out a history of The Chemical Brothers' career and makes for an essential retrospective. As Simons puts it, there's a fair breadth of music on there. Singles 93-03 starts with the band's first release, the dark adrenalin-fest "Song to the Siren", recorded in Rowlands' student bedroom, and ends with two new recordings - including the psychedelic single "The Golden Path", featuring The Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne. In between, it takes in the No 1 hit "Setting Sun" (from Dig Your Own Hole, with Noel Gallagher on vocals) and the intense, pummelling "Hey Boy Hey Girl", from Surrender, as well as hits from last year's Come with Us.

      Liam's wedding plans

LIAM GALLAGHER plans to marry fiancée NICOLE APPLETON in a working men’s club. The multi-millionaire wildman fancies the Mild May Working Men’s Club in North London for the big day — a venue normally associated with bingo and carpet bowls.

It even has a Stannah stairlift at the entrance to help less able customers in and out. Liam says: “I love this place, I’m going to have my wedding here. It’s absolutely brilliant.” The OASIS singer was at the club on Thursday with brother NOEL to see favourite new band THE STANDS. The place was decked out in flock wallpaper, multi-coloured tinsel and a disco ball.

In fact all that was missing was a compere like Jerry St Clair from PETER KAY’s C4 comedy Phoenix Nights. The Mild May has been a working men’s club for 115 years. Oasis hired it out for a day last year to shoot the video for their single stop Crying Your Heart Out. Irish manageress May Hagan warned the singer would have to hurry with his booking. She told me: “Liam would be welcome to make a booking if this is where he wants to go — but we will need a date because things can get quite busy.

“Oasis filmed a video here last year and they hired it for the day.

“They said they would send me a video but I never got one. I still haven’t seen it.” She added: “We normally have some real characters in here. I worked in a mental asylum before and I think some of the characters we get in here drinking should be locked up.”
May will have to wait for the all important call — Liam and former ALL SAINT Nicole haven’t set a date yet but are said to be thinking about early next year.

Around 200 people were at the Mild May’s gig featuring Liverpool’s The Stands and Mancunian outfit I AM KLOOT. Both bands were excellent, with The Stands’ brand of Merseybeat particularly impressive — sounding similar to THE CORAL with the same hypnotic, jangly guitar solos.
Liam said of The Stands: “This band are my mates and they are f***ing brilliant. The music, it feels nice on my ears, you know what I mean.”
Maybe they could play at the wedding — but I think Liam should run it by Nicole first. In fact, I can’t imagine she’s wild about the prospect of tying the knot at the Mild May.

Still, you’d better roll with it Nicole — it may be Liam’s only offer.

      Open Wide Liam

Oasis singer Liam Gallagher (30), well-known rioter and infamous bigmouth, is uncommonly quiet at the moment. He refused to give any comments after visiting a dentist in London as THE SUN reports. Liam took a seat on the dentist's chair to get his new front teeth checked. He got his false pair after a wild fight (last year).
Meanwhile fiancee Nicole Appleton (28) was there holding Liam's hands during the whole procedure.
