Robbie and Liam .... " Karaoke King and Prince"

Robbie Williams and Christina Aguilera are the country's top karaoke idols, according to a new poll. They were chosen as the stars with the most enviable singing voices in showbiz. Asked which male star they most wanted to sound like, Williams came out on top closely followed by arch rival Liam Gallagher. Aguilera topped the women's poll and pop queen Madonna was runner-up.

The poll of 1,000 people for radio station Century FM revealed that veteran stars like Rod Stewart and Annie Lennox were still popular choices. They were placed alongside more recent chart acts such as Justin Timberlake and Beyonce Knowles.

      My Big Mouth

Noel Gallagher has stamped his unique mark on Glastonbury today, after unceremoniously telling a photographer to "f*ck off" when he tried to take his picture, dotmusic can report.

The Oasis songwriter, long expected to make an appearance at this year's event, turned-up backstage at around 1pm with long-time girlfriend Sara McDonald.

Gallagher, rumoured to be planning to watch The Basement, The Stands and The Bandits this afternoon in the New Tent, entered the backstage press office and quickly forced his way to the front of the queue.

However, he was met with a fairly unimpressed reaction from a male press officer who asked him to wait his turn. A snapper from a weekly UK music magazine was then told where to go when he aimed his lens at the rock superstar.

Meanwhile, minutes later, dotmusic was also knocked-back, because Noel was "too busy" to give his opinion on this year's festival. He did find time, however, to sign autographs, including a toilet seat being to be auctioned by the charity Water Aid.

Noel at Glastonbury: Definitely or Maybe

As temperatures soar, the celebs are expected to be out in force backstage at GLASTONBURY this afternoon (June 28), with rumours persisting that NOEL GALLAGHER will guest-compere the New Stage later this afternoon.

The Oasis genius has just arrived on site at lunchtime, and speculation as to whether he will play an impromptu solo set has been rife.

Already this morning, Kate Moss has turned up to watch the 22-20’s set at the Other Stage, where the youthful quartet drew a sizeable crowd, including the supermodel mate of Primal Scream, who got into the groove at the side of the stage, looking low-key in a trilby hat.

Carlos from Interpol was also sat at the side of the stage nodding along.

    UPDATE

NOEL GALLAGHER sent his seal of approval to newcomers THE STAND as they took the stage at the New Tent this afternoon (June 28) – but the OASIS star himself never materialised on stage.

On-site rumour had been rife that he would turn up in person to introduce the band after he arrived this afternoon, but instead he asked the stage’s regular announcer to pass on his regards.

”I’ve just been speaking to a young lad called Noel, who thinks they’re brilliant,” he said, and alluded to Noel’s absence, adding: “If any of you were expecting someone here this afternoon – tough! But he did tell me to tell you he may be in the Comedy Tent doing his stand-up routine at 1.30 in the morning.”

      Record industry to sue downloaders

We will go after the worst offenders first. -- Carey Sherman, RIAA's president

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The embattled music industry disclosed aggressive plans Wednesday for an unprecedented escalation in its fight against Internet piracy, threatening to sue hundreds of individual computer users who illegally share music files online.

The Recording Industry Association of America, citing substantial sales declines, said it will begin Thursday to search Internet file-sharing networks to identify users who offer "substantial" collections of mp3 music files for downloading. It expects to file at least several hundred lawsuits seeking financial damages within eight to 10 weeks.

Executives for the RIAA, the Washington-based lobbying group that represents major labels, would not say how many songs on a user's computer will qualify for a lawsuit. The new campaign comes just weeks after U.S. appeals court rulings requiring Internet providers to identify subscribers suspected of illegally sharing music and movie files.

    Facing the music
The RIAA's president, Carey Sherman, said tens of millions of Internet users of popular file-sharing software after Thursday will expose themselves to "the real risk of having to face the music."

"It's stealing. It's both wrong and illegal," Sherman said. Alluding to the court decisions, Sherman said Internet users who believe they can hide behind an alias online were mistaken. "You are not anonymous," Sherman said. "We're going to begin taking names."

Critics accused the RIAA of resorting to heavy-handed tactics likely to alienate millions of Internet file-sharers.

"This latest effort really indicates the recording industry has lost touch with reality completely," said Fred von Lohmann, a lawyer for the Electronic Frontier Foundation. "Does anyone think more lawsuits are going to be the answer? Today they have declared war on the American consumer."

Public resistance?Sherman disputed that consumers, who are gradually turning to legitimate Web sites to buy music legally, will object to the industry's latest efforts against pirates.

"You have to look at exactly who are your customers," he said. "You could say the same thing about shoplifters -- are you worried about alienating them? All sorts of industries and retailers have come to the conclusion that they need to be able to protect their rights. We have come to the same conclusion."

Mike Godwin of Public Knowledge, a consumer group that has challenged broad crackdowns on file-sharing networks, said Wednesday's announcement was appropriate because it targeted users illegally sharing copyrighted files.

"I'm sure it's going to freak them out," Godwin said. "The free ride is over." He added: "I wouldn't be surprised if at least some people engaged in file-trading decide to resist and try to find ways to thwart the litigation strategy."

The RIAA said its lawyers will file lawsuits initially against people with the largest collections of music files they can find online. U.S. copyright laws allow for damages of $750 to $150,000 for each song offered illegally on a person's computer, but Sherman said the RIAA will be open to settlement proposals from defendants.

"We have no hard and fast rule on how many files you have to be distributing ... to come within our radar screen," Sherman said.

The RIAA said it expected to file "at least several hundred lawsuits" within eight to 10 weeks but will continue to file lawsuits afterward on a regular basis.

      Death in Vegas praise Liam

Proof of Death in Vegas' solid rock cred lies in the album's guest stars, a veritable who's who of British musical elite, including Paul Weller, Mazzy Star's Hope Sandoval, Dot Allison and Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher. It's the album's centerpiece and first single, "Scorpio Rising," featuring Gallagher, that exemplifies Death in Vegas' seamless lacing of rock and roll anthems to shimmering electronics.

After spending a few months trying to track Gallagher down, Death in Vegas discovered the mercurial frontman wasn't the notorious bad-ass they'd envisioned. "He was on his best behavior and he was incredibly professional. And what a voice — it's probably the loudest voice I've ever recorded in my life," Holmes said. "I wouldn't want to get into an argument with him, that's for sure. But [he was] a lovely guy. Really funny, really witty and really sweet."
Unfortunately, the younger Gallagher couldn't celebrate the tracks' completion with the genre-defying duo. "He can't go out [in public]. It's mental being that well known. He can't walk down the street. I would love to sit in the pub with him and shoot the breeze for a few hours, but poor man, he can't even go out for a pint."

Perhaps taking a cue from their notorious Brit-rock collaborator, Death in Vegas stirred up their very own rock controversy when the menacing techno track "Hands Around My Throat" was banned from video channels in France after a spate of auto-asphyxiation cases among Parisian teens hit a little too close to home.

FM Station bidder to showcase new bands

ITS non-executive director discovered Oasis performing in a small Glasgow music venue. Now Alan McGee and The Storm, one of the bidders for the new Glasgow FM radio licence, are to stage a series of one-off gigs for unsigned rock bands in Glasgow. The consortium is one of a dozen suitors for the lucrative licence, which will reach up to two million listeners in the Glasgow area. If successful, The Storm is also pledging £400,000 over three years to a scheme that will offer tuition and guidance to aspiring rock bands at Glasgow schools and colleges. The concerts are part of Storm Unsigned, an on-air programme initiative that will champion local rock music talent that is struggling to be heard, demonstrating The Storm's commitment to Glasgow's thriving grassroots rock scene. The Storm has already produced a CD featuring many of the bands in the line-up for these shows. The Storm Unsigned showcases will be held at Barfly, The Cathouse, and King Tut's Wah Wah Hut, Glasgow, the venue where Alan McGee first saw Oasis play a decade ago.

      "Bowl" with it....

NO, me foo*in’ mam did NOT put a bowl over me head – I went to the salon for a new foo*in’ ’air-do.” That’s what LIAM GALLAGHER yelled as he stepped out of his West London home. Well, ok, he didn’t. I’m afraid the OASIS star’s actual words are not suitable for a family newspaper. Some might say Liam looks a bit of a girl with this cross between a bowl cut and a bob.

    Greatest snips ... Liam's hairstyles

And I’d have to agree with them. Not so long ago Liam, who sang Roll With It, was once on a par with DAVID BECKHAM when it came to hairstyle-chic, with thousands of fans copying his every snip. Some of his best – and worst – efforts over the years are pictured above.

    Bowl cut ... Enfield look

But I can’t imagine many devotees rushing to look like HARRY ENFIELD’s whining teenage character Kevin. My hunch is the singer’s two-year-old son Gene is to blame for the new look. But if you were the snipper who gave Liam his do, give me a call. I promise you a fair trial for your crimes against hairdressing.

      Glastonbury with Noel ?

With a little over week to go until GLASTONBURY, NOEL GALLAGHER, FLAMING LIPS, YEAH YEAH YEAHS and failed Eurovision entrants GEMINI are the first victims of the festival's rumour machine.

Even though the line-up has been announced, Glastonbury officials are struggling to cope with the huge amount of Internet rumours and half-truths circulating about the event. The first is that Noel Gallagher, who is spending the weekend at Glastonbury, is planning act as compare in the New Tent when his favourite bands play in succession (June 28).

The Hokum Clones, The Basement, The Stands and The Bandits, who play in that order, are all groups who are in one way or another associated with Noel, with the last two recording at the guitarist's studio. His friends have told NME.COM he's "well up" for helping out his mates over the Glasto weekend, and taking to the stage before each one to big them up.

      Whatever....

MAD FOR IT AT ICKE LECTURE

NOEL GALLAGHER has become a DAVID ICKE devotee. The mad for it Oasis star invited his band to see Icke give a five-hour talk in Brixton.

One of Icke's bizarre conspiracy theories is that a group called the Illuminati have chosen every US president.

Perhaps Noel can call on their help to crack the US market

Mogul behind Oasis buys back label for a song

The record company founded by the entrepreneur who discovered Oasis has gone for a song. Alan McGee bought his Poptones label back for just £1.
The Scottish music mogul, who once advised the Government on employment policy, has become a victim of a record industry recession after failing to find a new band to match the warring Gallagher brothers. Mr McGee discovered Oasis in 1994 and signed them to his Creation records, which he sold to Sony for £20 million five years later.

When Mr McGee announced a new label, incorporating music and film production, it sounded such a sure thing that the Keeper of the Privy Purse reportedly invested £50,000 from the royal estate to purchase a 2.27 per cent stake in the business. What Her Majesty perhaps did not intend was that the equity from Poptones’ £17.5 million AIM flotation would be invested in artists such as El Vez, “a Mexican, homosexual, communist Elvis impersonator” and “disco punk” artists Ping Pong Bitches.

Losses of £1 million piled up and the permanent workforce were sacked before the company found respite after discovering a Swedish group called The Hives. The band was later lured to Universal and Poptones’ shares renewed their slide. The shares fell another 25 per cent yesterday to 4½p as the company told the Stock Exchange that it would become a non-trading company. The statement said: “As a small AIM-traded independent record label, Poptones has been unable to sign enough artists of sufficient profile to enable it to achieve the record sales required to support its initial strategy.” Mr McGee has taken back the Poptones trading subsidiaries, including two joint ventures with Telstar and The Punk Rock Film Company, for a nominal fee of £1. He will hope to breathe life into the chart careers of existing Poptones signings Cosmic Rough Riders and Los Angeles group The Bellrays.

Plans to sign a record deal with Courtney Love, the high-maintenance performer, have been abandoned. Mr McGee has resigned from the Poptones board and waived any compensation fees. Those who bought into the Poptones dream included Julian Richer, of Richer Sounds, a company director, while shareholders included Martin Edwards, the former Manchester United chairman, and Alan Hansen.

      ABBA Gallagher

    Waterloo lookin' at?

I PROMISE you the following story is not a wind-up.

LIAM GALLAGHER has formed an ABBA-style band with fiancée NICOLE APPLETON, her sister NATALIE and her husband LIAM HOWLETT. The foursome have recorded a song as NLLN — which stands for their initials. The four practice at the home of Prodigy star Liam who performed the backing track. The other Liam, famed for his hard-as-nails attitude, sings while the pretty sisters do cheesy backing vocals. Nicole revealed: “We did a song together called Drop The Gun. Liam screamed so loud we couldn’t hear. “We came up with the name just like Abba. “But we only do gigs at Liam’s house.” You couldn’t make it up.

I just hope NOEL GALLAGHER is reading this — goodness knows what he’ll make of our kid, who seems to have gone a bit soft recently. Mop-haired Liam’s drinking mates must be wondering if he has lost the plot, too, after he ditched pubs and clubs for days out at the fair and, er, the Ideal Home Exhibition. He has also taken his cat to the vet and enjoyed days out with sons LENNON and GENE. Dad-for-it Liam even did an OZZY OSBOURNE earlier this year with a fly-on-the-wall TV documentary. In Appleton On Appleton, viewers saw Liam listening to the sisters talking about their careers and heard him say: “I feel like f***ing Abba.” Oh, the irony. But the original Swedish act — BJORN, BENNY, AGNETHA and FRIDA — need not worry as the OASIS singer has no plans to release Drop The Gun. But I wonder what NLLN’s first single will be.

    (Joy Division)
"If rock'n'roll is having your own dance, dancing in your own world, dancing for an audience to know just how much you're in control of being out of control, dancing on top of your dreams, dancing through your nightmares, then Ian Curtis is the greatest"

Paul Morley (extract from this week's City Life)

    ------------------------------------------------------------

    MORRISSEY
    (The Smiths/solo)
"I remember the first time I listened to The Smiths album it seemed to call out to something in my blood. His lyrics, along with Johnny Marr's tunes, evoked that feeling of growing up on those terraced streets of the '60s and '70s, as narrow, dirty, sordid and seemingly predestined as our lives..."

Terry Christian (extract from this week's City Life)

    ------------------------------------------------------------

    LIAM GALLAGHER
    (Oasis)
"A bona fide alien rock star, beamed from Planet Chaos, borne of almighty bedlam, he embodies rock'n'roll itself, and Manchester itself, the very idea of The Frontman itself; perennial outsider..."
Sylvia Patterson (extract from this week's City Life)

    ------------------------------------------------------------

    IAN BROWN
    (The Stone Roses/solo)
"Ian Brown lives in our world. He'll bound up to you and ask you have you heard this, thought that, read this. He has those endearing enthusiasms, some of them quite mad; he'll talk music, politics, sport, kids. Conspiracy theories. Travelling."

Dave Haslam (extract from this week's City Life)

    ------------------------------------------------------------

    SHAUN RYDER
    (Happy Mondays/Black Grape)
One man managed to drag rock'n'roll somewhere less clichéd. Shaun was on-the-make, impenetrably cool and fearless, but to wholly attribute his charisma to gangster-ish swagger misses the point. At his best, he was also endowed with a lyrical talent dangerously close to genius. In essence, Shaun William Ryder gave rock'n'roll a much-needed Mancunian accent.

John Harris (extract from this week's City Life)

    ------------------------------------------------------------

    TIM BURGESS
    (The Charlatans/solo)
The dreamy, pin-up youth whose goofy charisma and pretty boy pout were key cards in the band's swift rise from baggy outsiders to key players. Over the past few albums, Burgess has cemented his position as one of his generation's true bona fide frontmen. As he's described himself, he is 'the sundance kid' who 'lives it like he loves it'.

John Robb (extract from this week's City Life)

    ------------------------------------------------------------

    BERNARD SUMNER
    (New Order/Electronic)
Sumner was born to sideline. But in the throws of Joy Division's chrysalis-like, post-suicide re-ordination as New Order - surely the cardinals of all Mancunian pop music, ever - he took the baton and became perhaps the greatest anti-frontman of all time, creating a magnetic focus for a pop group that would go on to create some of the tastiest music invented, ever.

Paul Flynn (extract from this week's City Life)

    ------------------------------------------------------------

    RICHARD ASHCROFT
    (The Verve/solo)
The northern soul who swept all before him with The Verve before going solo. The only one who can play both the sensitive troubadour card and then the petulant rock'n'roll beast in one fell swoop. And, all the while, producing some of the most life enriching, dare it be said, the closest thing to 'white soul music', any British musician in the '90s has produced.

David Sue (extract from this week's City Life)

    ------------------------------------------------------------

    MICK HUCKNALL
    (Frantic Elevators/Simply Red)
More vitriol is reserved for Hucknall than anyone else, but he can sing, he's arrogant, and Mick Hucknall has soul. Get over yourself and admit it - he's a great frontman. And like local heroes 10CC, he's put something back into the city when he co-founded Blood and Fire Records. Which is more than the Gallaghers ever did.

PJ Anderson (extract from this week's City Life)

    ------------------------------------------------------------

    MARK E SMITH
    (The Fall)
An anti-rock star, as genuinely punk as is possible to be, Mark E Smith invented his own brand of non-performance and non-singing. No-one in the history of music has written from such a huge frame of reference and Smith's genius is so great he even managed to make Inspiral Carpets appear interesting (on 'I Want You', a pure punk - pop thrill and all-time classic Top of the Pops moment).

Sunshine follows Thunder (new large format Oasis book)

    The Michael Spencer Jones Archive
    publication: 2003

Ten years ago, Oasis erupted onto the music scene, less like a breath of fresh air and more like a hurricane of soberingly cold wind. Pushing aside indie popsters and teeny chart toppers, they brought a much-needed blast of anarchic rock 'n' roll the likes of which hadn't been heard for decades. And with their latest album Heathen Chemistry they're still blasting the competition out of the water.

Michael Spencer Jones was there from the very beginning. He was responsible for the cover photography of the first three albums - Definitely Maybe, Be Here Now and (What’s the Story) Morning Glory - as well as all bar one of the singles released at that time from 'Supersonic', 'Shaker Maker' and 'Live Forever' through the almost surreal images of 'Roll With It' and 'Wonderwall' to the Beatle-esque 'Don't Look Back in Anger' and 'All Around the World'. From the start, Michael's photographs became an integral part of the band's image.

He also travelled with them on tour and followed them into the studio, his camera capturing them rehearsing, recording, live on stage and relaxing and tearing things up off of it. Sunshine Follows Thunder includes the pick of Michael's remarkable archive. Out-takes from the album sessions sit alongside intimate pictures of the band playing pool, accompanied by an illuminating text giving a first-hand insight into the life of Oasis, the stories behind the classic covers and the making of rock 'n' roll legends.

This large-format book is produced to the highest standards of craftmanship for which Genesis books are famed. Each copy is master-printed onto 200gsm art acid-free paper, craftsman-bound in quarter leather and housed in a stylish protective slipcase. The edition is restricted to just 950 individually numbered copies worldwide, each one signed by Michael Spencer Jones.

Genesis is proud to add OASIS, the band of the Nineties, to its illustrious list of artists.

We cannot accept firm orders at this stage, but if you join the Genesis mailing list you will be given the first chance to order the book before publication at the special pre-publication price. You will also receive regular email updates on progress. A free advance prospectus is also available if you also complete the optional address fields. (All addresses are kept private and never passed on to any other party.)

UPDATE: L4E HAS RECEIVED AN EMAIL FROM TESSA HODGSON (GENESIS) STATING THAT THIS PROJECT HAS BEEN PUT ON HOLD

Noel's fave band get record deal

    The Stands get signed

After a furious bidding war THE STANDS have signed a record deal with ECHO - and have recorded part of their album at NOEL GALLAGHER's studio. The group's currently untitled debut album has just been finished, and will be preceded by first single 'She Speaks Of These Things' on July 21. The Manchester band decided to record in the shortest time possible at Olympic Studios and Abbey Road in London, and, like The Bandits before them, had a stint at Noel's studio. The whole thing was completed in just a couple of weeks.

The band's connection with Oasis is more than just professional - singer/ songwriter Howie Paine and Noel have been mates for a while, with Gallagher turning up to their early shows and bigging them up in interviews. "We're friends. It's very flattering that they've taken us under their wing," said Payne of Oasis. "In the studio, if you're worried that you're going too far - they're there to say 'Go for it." Gallagher also promised to help out the band if they couldn't get the record deal they wanted, which was declined by The Stands. After a frantic deal they opted for to become labelmates with the likes of Feeder at Echo. "We are very much of the attitude that this is the way we wanna do it, and this is how it is, but it's nice to have the Oasis guys there to look over it while we're following our instincts," Howie said. The debut album from The Stands is due to be released on September 22, and their unconfirmed second single will be out on September 8, both via Echo. The band, Payne, guitarist Luke Thomson, bassist Steve Pilgrim and drummer Dean Ravera, are about to embark on a UK tour with Alfie.

      "Wonderhall"

Noel tell of best night out in snooker bar

MILLIONAIRE rock star Noel Gallagher has revealed he spent one of his best nights out in a Scottish snooker hall. The Oasis guitarist and songwriter told how he spent a boozy night with comedian Keith Allen at the Partick Snooker Club in Glasgow. Noel, 36, who wrote smash hits Wonderwall and Don't Look Back In Anger, said he had "never been so drunk" after his session. The Gallagher family's Irish background and Noel's support for Celtic ensured a warm welcome from his Scottish fans. And the wildman, dating Scot Sara MacDonald, admitted their generosity was in evidence the night he rolled into the bar with Allen. He said: "The club was packed and everyone was buying me drinks. "I have never been so drunk in all my life and it was one of the best nights I have ever had.
"We chatted about football and politics until the wee small hours." Bar supervisor Alec Henderson, 48, recalled: "Noel and Keith had a few drinks, as rock stars do, and a couple of games of snooker.
"He was no trouble though and had a great laugh with all the punters." And Noel also revealed how he shared a drink with Celtic manager Martin O'Neill after the club's 6-2 victory over Old Firm rivals Rangers in 2000. Noel said: "I was standing there thinking, `I can't believe this. I'm sitting in the manager's office having a whisky.'
"I couldn't believe it, it really was a great day out."

      The Blair - Oasis connection

    translation : live4ever.us

Are the followers of "bad boy" rockers Oasis loyal Labour party voters ? British premier minister Tony Blair seemed to believe so for a while and tried to squeeze the fan mailing list out of the band prior to the 1997 elections. He intended to spamm it with party adds. Blair biographer John Harris came across the story. He reports that the politician had invited Noel Gallagher to Downing Street to get the addresses from him. But the Wonderwall-band strictly denied the request.
