Oasis Break Their Own Singles Record

They may be the band with eight number one’s and countless top ten hits, but this weekend was the first time Oasis could celebrate hitting the top of the charts with both an LP’s first and second singles.

Oasis removed the McFly from the top of the UK singles chart this weekend (August 28) as the ’The Importance Of Being Idle’ became Oasis’ eighth number one.

The band also had another reason to celebrate as ‘Don’t Believe The Truth’ is the only Oasis album to have ever spawned number one’s from it’s first two single releases.

The number one release Some Might Say’ was followed by the much-hyped number two release Roll With It’ (from ‘(What’s The Story) Morning Glory?’); ‘D’You Know What I Mean?’ was followed by number two hit ‘Stand By Me’ (from ‘Be Here Now’); ‘Go Let It Out’ preceded the number four release ‘Who Feels Love?’ (from ‘Standing On The Shoulders Of Giants’) and World Cup sobber ‘Stop Crying Your Heart Out’ only made it to number two after the number one success of ‘The Hindu Times’ (from ‘Heathen Chemistry’).

The band also look set to make it three in a row with the proposed release of ‘Let There Be Love’ later this year.

Oasis get their eighth #1 single

Oasis shoots straight to top of UK pop charts

"The Importance of Being Idle" is the second top hit for the Manchester band from their recent album "Don't Believe The Truth". It is their eighth number one UK single.

Oasis shot straight to the top of the UK pop charts on Sunday, one of seven new entries to burst into the top 10 this week, according to the Official UK Charts Company.

"The Importance of Being Idle" is the second top hit for the one-time bad boy Manchester band from their recent album "Don't Believe The Truth" following on from the success of "Lyla". It is their eighth number one UK single.

Kaiser Chiefs were another new entry in ninth place with "I Predict A Riot" with "My Doorbell" from The White Stripes debuting in 10th.

      Noel's advice for Doherty

Oasis star Noel Gallagher advises Pete Doherty to concentrate on making music - to avoid being known only as Kate Moss' boyfriend.

The Wonderwall guitarist believes troubled rocker Doherty needs to rethink his direction in life if he wants to become the music icon he already considers himself to be.

He said: "I think two years ago, if you thought Pete Doherty, he was kind of untouchable. "Now when you think of Pete Doherty you think of that guy who's always in the background if that picture with Kate Moss.

"And if he wants to go out like that, then each to their own, and I'm sure he's having a great time but, y'know, are you gonna be remembered as Kate Moss's boyfriend or a f**king artist?

"In six months, if he's not put a record out, it's gonna smack of the emperor's new clothes, all of it. My opinion of him hasn't changed. His heart's in the right place but the people he's around are not that good for him."

Noel : no new material until 2007

Noel Gallagher has announced the release date for the band’s next album. But don’t hold your breath – The Guv’nor says you’ll be lucky to get another record out of the band before 2010.

In a new interview, Oasis head-honcho Noel Gallagher has confirmed his band won’t release any new material until 2007. In fact, he wouldn’t be surprised if the next album isn’t out until 2010.

Gallagher did, however, confirm that the band will release a new B-sides compilation next year collecting the flip-sides from ‘Standing On The Shoulders Of Giants’, ‘Heathen Chemistry’ and ‘Don’t Believe The Truth’. He also rubbished claims the band are on the verge of releasing a ‘Greatest Hits’.

“This is from the horse’s mouth. We will only do a ‘Best Of’ when we split up. The only thing we’ve got that might be in the pipeline next year will be another B-sides album, all the B-sides from ‘Standing…’ to this lot,” explained Noel to the NME, before taking a pop at his Britpop rivals.

“I never understood the Manics and Blur putting out ‘Best Of’s - I mean, what the fuck’s all that about? It’s kind of saying that whatever you’re gonna do from there on is not gonna be your best. We’ll put out a ‘Best Of’ when we stop. No ‘Best Of’ or singles album until it’s done and dusted.”

He also confirmed that when the band do finally return to the studio, there won’t be a huge amount of songwriting needed to be done.

“We’ll probably have the rest of [next] year out [after the tour ends] and Liam will write 500 songs, Gem and Andy will write a few and I’ll go back to the ones I haven’t finished off. We never make plans. We haven’t got a record deal now anyway.

“So we’re gonna have to find a new record deal that suits us. That’s where we’re at, and then… we don’t like to rush things. ‘Be Here Now’ was rushed, ‘Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants’ was rushed and it’s kind of like, ‘If it takes five years for the album to come out, I’m not arsed.’

Noel also commented on the man who Liam swore would never play with them again and, at V this weekend, described as a four foot penis: Pete Doherty.

“I think two years ago, if you thought of Pete Doherty, he was kind of untouchable,” Noel considers. “Now when you think of Pete Doherty you think of that guy who’s always in the background of that picture with Kate Moss… Are you gonna be remembered as Kate Moss’ boyfriend or a fucking artist?

“In six months, if he’s not put a record out, it’s gonna smack of the emperor’s new clothes, all of it. My opinion of him hasn’t changed. His heart’s in the right place but the people he’s around are not that good for him.

“I was disappointed [about his no-show supporting Oasis in Southampton] because I convinced Liam to get Babyshambles on because I’d seen them at Brixton and I thought it was amazing. And Liam was going, ‘No man, I’m not having any of this shit,’ and I was going, ‘Fucking trust me man, it’s great.’

“We weren’t furious, it was like, ‘Oh, he’s got to do a fashion show,’ and it was like, ‘Well, if fashion shows mean more to you, good luck to you.’ He should change his name really, I think he’s living up to his name as Babyshambles…”

3 Oasis tracks featured on new movie soundtrack

Directed by British born Danny Cannon (CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer), GOAL! tells the story of one boy's battle to succeed against the odds.

Like many ten year old boys Santiago Munez (Kuno Becker) had a dream: to escape Los Angeles and take centre stage in the country where football was born. When Santiago Munez crossed the Mexican border into America he had two things in his possession: his football and a tattered picture of the World Cup.

Kuno Becker stars in the film along with Alessandro Nivola, Anna Friel, Stephen Dillane, Marcel Iures, Sean Pertwee, Cassandra Bell, and Kieran O’Brien. Also featured in the film are some of the biggest names from the world of football including David Beckham, Zinedine Zidane, Raul and Newcastle United captain Alan Shearer.

This film is the first of a trilogy, which ultimately will see our hero go to the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

The soundtrack compliments the film perfectly with tracks from the likes of Kasabian and Trail Of Dead, as well as the first single in over 10 years from the Happy Mondays, entitled Playground Superstar.

Also there is an exclusive new Oasis track as well as two exclusive Oasis remixes you won't be able to hear anywhere else - see the tracklisting below for details.

    Soundtrack Tracklisting:::

    1. HAPPY MONDAYS - Playground Superstar
    2. OASIS – Who Put The Weight Of The World On My Shoulders
    3. UNKLE FEAT. JOEL CADBURY of SOUTH - Leap of Faith
    4. DIRTY VEGAS – Human Love
    5. OASIS - Morning Glory (D Sardy Mix)
    6. BEES – This Is The Land
    7. OASIS – Cast No Shadow (UNKLE Beachhead Mix)
    8. GRAEME RAVELL – Score: That’s That
    9. KASABIAN – Club Foot
    10. ZERO 7 – Look Up
    11. PRINCESS SUPERSTAR – Wet! Wet! Wet!

Q and A with the Chief

LONDON (Billboard) - It has often been a rocky decade, but Oasis has rolled with it .

Reinvigorating the dreary British music scene of the pre-Britpop 1990s, these dropouts hailing from a Manchester, England, housing project sparkled and soared like the champagne supernova of their famous song.

Steadfast in the belief that it is better to risk a bad opinion than excite no opinion at all, the band raced up the rankings in U.K. rock without looking back. When it hit the top 10 for the first time in the summer of 1994 with the song "Live Forever," fans knew the title was no empty promise.

The swagger of Oasis' first chart singles earlier that year, "Supersonic" and "Shakermaker," presented an offer that a somnambulant British music industry could not, and did not, want to resist.

But the group's braggadocio was founded in hard work, endless rehearsals and gigs with little glamour from as early as 1991.

The history of a truly larger-than-life British rock band has unfolded in the last 10 years. Working with a variety of band members from that day through to the release of their current album, "Don't Believe the Truth," brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher have walked it exactly as they've talked it.

Except, of course, on those occasions when either or both of the brothers do not care to talk at all and fail to show for interviews. It is a frustration this writer already has experienced and one which, true to form, Liam chose to reprise for this report.

Nevertheless, his older brother was in an expansive yet thoughtful mood as he reflected on the past, present and future of Oasis.

Q: Now that you have become a long-serving band, does that help you to understand better the motivation behind groups like U2, R.E.M. and even the Rolling Stones?

A: I'm a massive fan of the Stones, and I don't think anybody should deny them the right to carry on making music. I just wish they wouldn't wear leggings.

In the case of R.E.M., I don't own any of their records, but we kind of meet them on the road every now and again. Peter Buck and the bass player are great. But it's the big blue stripe (makeup that frontman Michael Stipe sometimes wears) -- there's no need for that.

U2, I love, I grew up listening to them, and I own all their albums. I remember going to see them on the Zoo TV tour and Bono in his alter ego as the Fly was ridiculing the guy with the mullet and the campaigning rock star. It's funny how it's now come full circle, and he's back.

The longer you go on, it magnifies more of what you are. The longer we do it, the more we look like where we come from.

In the case of me and Liam, who've been there the longest, we look like a couple of guys from a council estate in Burnage and always will be. We never went to college, we were kicked out of school and went straight onto building sites. There was no time for pretension.

Q: But you were very single-minded about going after success, weren't you?

A: When we started off, we wanted the girls, the cocaine, the fur coats ... we never got to the leather trousers though, thank God. It wasn't like an act, it was almost like working-class people winning the pools. We went bananas. I've got a fleet of cars I bought at that period, and I've never had a driving licence, ever.

Q: After a band achieves the iconic status that you did, is that when you start questioning your motivation?

A: There are periods where you think, "What am I doing?" or "What am I doing it for?"; that's a more scary question. "I've made s---loads of money, I've left my mark in music, why am I still doing this?," and it takes a while to answer that question. It comes back every time we're at the end of a tour and you have three or four months off and then you've got to get back on the saddle. More often than not, the answer that comes back from me is, "What else are you going to do?"

I struggle with this conundrum. It's not a very noble thing to carry on, it's not very dashing. But I often meet people who've been in great bands and you go, "What are you doing now?" and they say, "I'm not doing anything," and I think that's more sad.

Q: Your trials and tribulations with band in-fighting and cancelled tours soured your reputation, especially in America. Do you feel more well-disposed towards the American market now?

A: I've never had a blatant disregard for it in the first place. It's just that America is a really delicate flower that needs a lot of attention, and we're not those kind of people.

The reason U2 and R.E.M. and Coldplay are the biggest white rock bands in America is because of their frontmen. Not being negative towards Liam, he's just not Chris Martin, he's not Bono, he's not Michael Stipe. He's Liam. For all intents and purposes, Americans don't get Liams. I think we're musically as strong as those three bands put together, but as characters we're different.

Q: Did starting your own label, Big Brother, in 2000, change the way you view the record industry?

A: The thing about bands these days is everybody wants to be the next Oasis, and that doesn't mean slogging it out around the toilet (gigs), it means, "Give me the cheque, I need to go to the Levis shop and I need a 1960s Gibson."

It's all about advances these days, and most managers of these new bands are idiots. We signed to Creation for 50 grand, and we didn't get any money for about three years. You tell that to a kid these days, and they'll vomit.

Q: Have you ever thought seriously about going solo?

A: I think about it all the time. I'm doing a bit of a soundtrack for some film that's coming out next year. But because I enjoy time off so much, by the time I've had my time off, it's time to do Oasis again. I always think I'll write the songs on the road, come back and in the six months Oasis are not doing anything, I'll put out a solo album. But because I'm (lazy), it never gets done, and by the time I want to start doing stuff, it's Oasis time. I hope it happens before I'm 40, but I'm 38 now.

    Q: What about Liam?

A: I think he'll do it before I will. He's got more songs, and he's a lot more driven in that department, because although he's 30-odd, he's only just started writing songs, so he's kind of where I was when I was 21.

Q: Now, in the United Kingdom, you can't move for bands paying tribute to your influence.

A: Razorlight, the Libertines, the Killers, the Strokes, Kings of Leon and Jet, all these bands are (citing) "Definitely Maybe" (the band's 1994 debut album).

We were the first people to come out and say, "The world's a great place, life is for living. Forget grunge music. Get a pint of Guinness down your neck, and pick that guitar up

Liam slags Doherty at V Festival

OASIS singer LIAM GALLAGHER has hit out at PETE DOHERTY during the band’s set at V FESTIVAL - comparing him to a 4ft inflatable penis.

The band have just finished their headline set at Hylands Park in Chelmsford - their only UK festival appearances in support of their current album ’Don’t Believe The Truth’.

During ’Bring It On Down’, Liam made a subtle reference to Doherty's well publicised drug troubles, by changing a lyric to You don’t care…because you’re smoking crack.

However, he was more obvious as soon as the song finished. After asking for the house lights to be put on the audience, Liam spotted an inflatable penis in the audience.

”It’s good to see Pete Doherty turned up,” he said, “one big cock.”

Liam’s feud with Pete began when Doherty failed to turn up to an Oasis support in Southampton.

In Chelmsford (August 20), the group played the highlights from their current album ’Don’t Belive The Truth’, as well as a handful of classics from debut album ’Definitely Maybe’.

Speaking to NME before the gig, guitarist Noel Gallagher said he had mixed feelings about the festival, but the band were up for the gig.

He said: “I’ve been a few times and only ever seen one good gig – that was The Coral a few years ago. I’m looking forward to it, it’s the only festival we’re doing in England this year. I think it could be good craic.”

Speaking about the band’s best ever festival performances, Gallagher admitted that up until now, none of their best sets had been in the UK. He continued: “You can count out all the ones in England. I don’t think we’ve ever pulled it off for some reason. Maybe this time. The thing is, when we’re playing festivals abroad, we’re usually second on the bill – we never get to headline. Whenever we’ve headlined Glastonbury by the time we get one everybody’s twatted.”

    The set was:

    ’Fuckin’ In The Bushes’ (intro)
    ’Turn Up The Sun’
    ’Lyla’
    ’Bring It On Down’
    ’Morning Glory’
    ’Cigarettes And Alcohol’
    ’The Importance Of Being Idle’
    ’A Bell Will Ring’
    ’Live Forever’
    ’The Meaning Of Soul’
    ’Mucky Fingers’
    ’Champagne Supernova’
    ’Rock ‘N’ Roll Star’

    Encore:

    ’Wonderwall’
    ’Don’t Look Back In Anger’
    ’My Generation’

      Oasis: “V2005’s Fantastic… Except Maroon 5”

While he may have only ever seen one good band there (The Coral, fact fans), Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher has guaranteed the Oasis day at least will be “fantastic” at V2005 this weekend. The Guv’nor talks festival sh*gs, D-list superfans and f*cking Maroon 5…

In a new interview, Noel Gallagher has delivered his pre-V2005 manifesto, and unsurprisingly, while he may have had bad experiences in the past, he thinks this year might be pretty good,

“The day we’re on is fantastic,” he explains to NME, “Apart from Maroon 5, every band that’s on the bill are friends of ours. There’s The Stands, Jet, The Zutons, The La’s and us on the same stage. So our backstage area will be great.

“I’ve been a few times, and only ever seen one good gig – that was The Coral a few years ago. I’m looking forward to it, it’s the only festival we’re doing in England this year. I think it could be a good crack.”

Against popular opinion, Noel confirms he didn’t hand-pick the bill entirely (“Well if we did, Maroon 5 wouldn’t be on it.”) and, while the backstage area may be a haze of cigarette smoke and Northern accents, he’s not entirely happy about the infamous V celebrity VIP list,

“I am a bit concerned about the kind of crowd we’ll get, it’s all East Enders extras and fucking D-list celebrities all there for a day out. Cat Deeley and all that…, It’ll be alright, it’ll be alright.”

In terms of festival advice, Noel keeps it simple (“Plenty of cash, plenty of cigarettes and skins, and a lift home!”), but, unlike his brother, isn’t so worried about festival hygiene,

“Fuck it, who wants to stay clean if it’s muddy? Fucking join in, have a laugh. It doesn’t really matter. (Echo And The Bunnymen frontman) Ian McCulloch’s the only type of person who’ll walk round in white trousers looking like a lunatic. Even if it’s sunny you get dirty anyway, so I’d just go with it man.

“[But] who the fuck wears white parkas anyway? – him [Liam], Ian McCulloch and Paul Weller. He likes his concrete, Liam.”

The Oasis mainman also adds some specific advice as to where best to have sex (“Somebody else’s tent!”) but if it’s party you’re after, it can only be on The Guv’nors bus…

“You can get 16 people on a tourbus, you can leave at any point, you’ve got a proper bed, and a fridge, and telly to watch the football. Say no more.”

      Liam to enter politics ?

Oasis star Liam Gallagher is so horrified by the rise in violence and lack of community spirit in Britain - he's planning on becoming a member of Parliament for the UK's Labour party to stamp out anti-social behaviour.

The WONDERWALL singer has been arrested in the past for vicious street fights, but he insists his aggressive days are behind him because he's determined to prevent others repeating his mistakes, by becoming a tough, crime-fighting politician.

A close friend tells Britain's Daily Star newspaper, "He believes in helping other people and being a Labour MP is how he'll do it. He wants to pump cash into the community and start up local youth centres for young people.

"He's absolutely determined to make a difference. As well as harsh penalties for teenage louts he'll also create tough anti-hoody laws.

"You don't mess with Liam. He just can't stand unnecessary violence and is always seething when he reads reports of happy slapping."

No idea what my songs mean....

Oasis star Noel Gallagher was so high on drugs when he created hits including DON'T LOOK BACK IN ANGER, he has absolutely no idea what his lyrics are all about.

The British rocker is tempted to quiz his fans, because they seem to know more about the meanings of his songs than he does.

He says, "I get the odd night when I'm halfway through Don't Look Back In Anger when I say to myself. 'I still don't know what these words mean!'

"I'm thinking what the ...what the... 'stand up beside the fireplace'. Why?

"And all these kids will be singing it at the top of their voices with all their arms around each other and I kind of feel like stopping and going, 'Look, can somebody help me out here? Am I missing something?'"

Oasis draw biggest crowd at Benicassim Festival

OASIS paid tribute to the Spanish, crackheads and recently deceased UK politician ROBIN COOK during their BENICASSIM FESTIVAL set tonight (August 7).

And earlier in the evening NME.COM grabbed a chat with Noel Gallagher, and found out he didn’t mind supporting Kasabian on the Escenario Verde stage.

He said of the festival: “I’ve never been before, Andy (Bell, bass player)’s been twice. We got our slot changed with Kasabian so we could watch them. This is no word of a fucking lie, we did the same when we were in Portugal two nights earlier and they were on after us. We’d never seen them live before and they fucking blew us away.”

He added: “I hate using this yank word but they were fucking awesome.”

The band, drawing easily the biggest crowd of the weekend, played a set similar to their recent UK stadium tour, with set closer ’Rock ‘N’ Roll Star’ dedicated to former Labour Party cabinet minister Robin Cook, who died suddenly last week.

Liam Gallagher also dedicated ’Cigarettes And Alcohol’ to “the prisoners, alcoholics and crackheads”. He also changed the words of ’Bring It On Down’, singing ”You’re the outcast, you’re the underclass, but you don’t care, because you’re smoking crack.”

Later in the set Noel dedicated ’Mucky Fingers’ to the Spanish, after asking “How many British people are here?” –when he heard the huge response he insisted: “Be nice to the locals.”

    The set was:

    ’Fuckin’ In The Bushes’ (intro)
    ’Turn Up The Sun’
    ’Lyla’
    ’Bring It On Down’
    ’Morning Glory’
    ’Cigarettes And Alcohol’
    ’The Importance Of Being Idle’
    ’A Bell Will Ring’
    ’Live Forever’
    ’The Meaning Of Soul’
    ’Mucky Fingers’
    ’Champagne Supernova’
    ’Rock ‘N’ Roll Star’

Liam and Nic on the move

OASIS singer LIAM GALLAGHER is set to move out of London and into a $9 million (GBP5 million) country mansion with his fiancee, former ALL SAINTS member NICOLE APPLETON.

The property, in Great Dunmow, Essex, is owned by Nicole's sister NATALIE APPLETON and husband LIAM HOWLETT, of dance act THE PRODIGY.

A source says, "Natalie's very excited about having her sister and Liam moving in with them.

"Liam and Liam get on very well and enjoy going out for pints together."

The move has sparked rumours that the couple are intending to eventually leave the country altogether.

According to an insider, "Liam and Nicole nearly moved to Canada last year. They feel they can walk around there without getting hassled like they do in the UK."

Liam has had it with Doherty

Liam Gallagher has said that Babyshambles will never support Oasis ever again after Pete Doherty failed to turn up for one of their gigs.

The Oasis front man angrily told Spanish newspaper El Mundo: “That’s where the relationship ended. What we’re not going to do is give him a second chance.”

“It’s not a question of professionalism. It’s much more simple than that. This is the greatest group in the world and what we’re not going to do is let anyone, Pete Doherty, Liam Gallagher or Elvis, fuck it all up.”

At the time of the concert Doherty claimed that he was stranded in Paris where he was attending the birthday party of friend and fashion designer Hedi Slimane. Babyshambles were eventually replaced by The Zutons for the support slot at Milton Keynes

      Liam and the King

I'm on a level with Elvis, says Oasis's Liam

MADRID (AFP) - Oasis singer Liam Gallagher, one of the names set to top the bill at a giant pop festival in Spain, has told a Spanish newspaper that he and the late Elvis Presley are on the same level.

"There's Elvis and me. I couldn't say which of the two is the best," Gallagher was quoted as saying, in remarks published in Spanish in the daily El Mundo.

The British group was due to star in the country's foremost rock festival, at Benicassim on the tourist-packed Mediterranean coast. The festival runs for four nights starting Thursday

Oasis played Benicassim in 2000 and this year will join other top acts including The Cure, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Keane, who are set to play before crowds of more than 30,000 a day if the previous two editions of the event are anything to go by.
