Liam slags off Franz Ferdinand and more....

Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher has been slagging off Franz Ferdinand (“Right Said Fred”), Scissor Sisters (“weirdoes on stilts”) Bloc Party, The Kaiser Chiefs ("just a bad Blur") and The Libertines (“Smackheads need slaps”).

As the release of the new Oasis album ‘Don’t Believe The Truth’ draws ever closer, frontman Liam Gallagher has been laying into the current crop of successful bands, only reserving his approval, oddly, for Charlotte Church.

In the interview with the NME Gallagher, speaking about Franz Ferdinand singer Alex Kapranos, said, "He reminds me of f**king Right Said Fred. You put on ‘I'm Too Sexy For My F**king Thing’ next to their records and I bet you any money it's the same person. It's the same f****** person! He's just gone on the Atkins diet and grown his hair. Not my thing at all. I don't like quirky weird music. "

As for Scissor Sisters, he responded, "If that's what they call entertaining, then let them have it - bright colours and f**king weirdoes on stilts? I'm more entertaining than that ****. And I'll rip his f**king vocal cords out any day because he's f**king rubbish."

And the newest bands making an impression on the charts don’t get off either. “F**king Kaiser Chiefs? Rubbish” he continues “Not ‘aving any of that nonsense, they’re just a bad Blur. I'm not having it - they wear make-up and their kecks are skintight" and Bloc Party “just remind me of a band off University Challenge. Like they’re sitting on a panel”

As for Pete Doherty, the Gallagher brothers seem split on their opinions. Liam, was (not surprisingly) quite negative, saying "I'm not into smackheads. Smackheads need slaps. So what does the word Libertine mean? Freedom! He's f**king in the corner doing smack with a helmet on his head! There's nothing free about that. It's nasty."

However Noel was rather more diplomatic about the Babyshambles frontman, "Pete's always been an absolute gentleman to me and my missus,” Noel explained, “He's incredibly well read and he's got a good soul. I tell you what, he needs to wash his hands more, but that's about it. He's one of the last bohemians, man."

But what about the Welsh operatic singing sensation? "It's Charlotte Church for me, man.” Liam declared, “She could be the next Liam. She's got a great voice and she f**king has it. She knows how to get f**king hammered and she freaks people out."

Oasis release their new album ‘Don’t Believe The Truth’ on May 30 while the first single 'Lyla’ will be out on May 16. Both will be released on Noel Gallagher’s own Big Brother Recordings label.

      The Bruvvers are back

"when don't believe the truth lands next month, the ground will shake. and it'll simply shake because it's oasis and they - after all this time - can still make the ground shake like no other band. in fact, the degree to which their new LP dares not to fit in with today's scene is a statement in itself of oasis' all-conquering importance" - nme.

5 star review of "Don't believe the truth"

Oasis have a new album out. And Caspar, editor of Observer Music Monthly has heard it. You can read the exclusive review when OMM comes out this Sunday 24 April. You can also read it right here, right now on the blog.

OASIS Don’t Believe The Truth (Big Brother) *****
At last, they’ve rediscovered what made them great, says Caspar Llewellyn Smith.

Do you remember the first time? The leathered sneer of Liam Gallagher that only a smack in the gob from his brother could silence, and his songwriting genius, and the swagger of their band (the ‘Sex Beatles’ is how a magazine called The Face heralded them) and the early records like ‘Supersonic’ or ‘Live Forever‘ – quite possibly ‘Digsy’s Dinner’ – that announced the aspirations of an era with such a rip-roaring snort that a young Prime Minister wooed them.

Shortly into the Blair presidency, Noel found himself at Number 10, asking Tony how he had managed to stay up through election night. ‘Probably not by the same means as you,’ the PM quipped, and that was 1997 all over.

Little is the same as it was back then, for all parties concerned, but this is where Oasis start to mend some broken promises. It feels like a lifetime since a new album from the Gallaghers justified the hype and rhetoric spun on its behalf, but this is so good, it makes you want to pour not one but two glasses of Jack -Daniels over your head.

Not so with the album that appeared three weeks after the Downing St party, Be Here Now, which was all bombast, or the successive disappointments of Standing on the Shoulder of Giants and Heathen Chemistry (bonus points if you can remember more than three song titles from that 2002 set); or the desultory showing at Glastonbury last summer; or the performance on I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here of Liam’s sister-in-law, Natalie Appleton. These could be seen as more than failures of will or of imagination – rather as acts of cultural betrayal.

So a touch of cynicism seems quite in order when it comes to Don’t Believe the Truth – a title that might disguise a message but is probably just more of Noel’s gobbledegook in the band’s own grand tradition. (And the sleeve – surely Oasis hold the record for the worst album sleeves of all time, and in this respect, their latest is no disappointment.)

Perhaps the band have come to a realisation of why some people feel like throwing crockery – Noel strikes a contrite note when he says: ‘Someone said to me my songs sound like B-sides from 1994. I take that as a compliment.’ What’s more, where once he ran the band as an autocracy – booting out anyone who didn’t toe the party line – these days he’s started to listen, to share responsibility. So it is that he’s only written five of the 11 songs, with bassist Andy Bell contributing two tracks, second guitarist Gem one, leaving Liam chipping in with three.

Let’s not get carried away, but only two of those last are in the ‘Little James’ category (where he essayed the rhyme ‘live for your toys/ even though they make noise’). One good Liam song immediately elevates this sixth album above the status of its two immediate predecessors, and everything else reaches a new target in quality control.

Noel is right to seize on that comparison with the band’s early output, because the most helpful way of thinking about Don’t Believe the Truth is to ponder what’s not there: there aren’t any of those coked-up guitar workouts, for instance, when the songs long outstayed their welcome. In fact, this is a record that doesn’t sound at all druggy, but alive to possibilities. The bluster, the straining for effect, the attempt to live up to a grandiose reputation of their own making – all these are absent. Indeed, for the past few years, Oasis have been trying to emulate the sound of the old Oasis, rather than ripping off their peers, which is what they once did, as if they were politicians nicking rival policies. After taking their time with this record – its release was rumoured last year – that’s all changed now.

So first single ‘Lyla’ appropriates a riff from the Stones’ ‘Street Fighting Man’ before stumbling into the bar-room territory of the Faces; ‘Mucky Fingers’ is a one-chord homage to the Velvet Underground; ‘The Importance of Being Idle’ is very Kinks, which at least makes a change from the Beatles; while the way in which ‘Part of the Queue’ borrows shamelessly from the Stranglers’ ‘Golden Brown’ completes a process akin to ‘triangulation’, which makes you believe you have the best of all possible worlds on offer.

These songs of Noel’s apart, Gem’s ‘A Bell Will Ring’ is otherwise this week’s pick, but from Andy Bell’s slow-burning opener ‘Turn up the Sun’ onwards, you’re reminded of what genuine charisma means and your heart skips a beat, as it flares into life with the line ‘I carry madness, everywhere I geeeeeeaaooo’ – no prizes for guessing it isn’t stand-in drummer Zak Starkey fronting up the microphone.

We have all made mistakes. So just as Noel would seem to have taken a long hard look at the band, we might ask ourselves some questions. Is swapping Pete Doherty and Kate Moss and crack for Liam and Patsy and the naive optimism of 1997 all that we have done?

Don’t Believe the Truth isn’t a novel – or novelty – record but it makes you care about Oasis again, and makes you believe they can matter again. So our bond with them is renewed.

Noel on video making and upcoming tour

NOEL GALLAGHER - 'MAKE ME LOOK TEN YEARS YOUNGER'

NOEL GALLAGHER has admitted he tells OASIS’s video directors to make him look ten years younger.

Though not normally known for his vanity, the guitarist admitted to MTV News that when deciding on video he has just a single concern.

“There's only ever been one criterion, and that's to make us look ten years younger. You get that right and I'm fine," Noel explained, adding that as a rule is not a big fan of shooting films for his songs.

"I fucking loathe videos,” he explained. “This is not the reason why I started a band, to stand on a video stage all day and mime a song 500 times, knowing that when you get to the end of the 499th, you're thinking, 'I don't even fucking like this song anymore, it's stupid.' But it's a necessary evil for me.”

Noel also added that while he’s looking forward to the band’s impending tour, he expects his relationship with his brother Liam to follow its usual, fractious course.

"It's always the same," he explained. "It starts off great and then somewhere, usually in America – I don't know why, probably the sight of cactus plants or something like that – it freaks Liam out. Then he oversteps the mark a little bit and it degenerates from there. It starts out great, then it just ends up being a bit of a shame, really. We'll see what happens this year."

      Ebay ticket caution

Oasis fans are being urged to be cautious when buying tickets to the forthcoming Oasis club shows through EBay.

As soon as the shows sold out last Friday tickets were being offered for sale through the internet auction site for as much as several hundred pounds. However, with the exception of a very limited number of tickets sold through box offices, tickets for these shows have yet to be issued. Fans are advised that those claiming to have tickets on EBay are unlikely to have actual tickets to sell at this time.

Furthermore due to security concerns and the short notice on which the club shows were put on sale it is possible that many tickets will be issued on the night at the venues. In this case the credit card used to purchase the tickets will need to be shown in order to receive the tickets.

Sony tracking anonymous seller of Oasis promos

The new OASIS album is in danger of having its release date brought forward after a batch of pirate copies were sold on auction website eBAY yesterday (18APR05).

The British rockers, fronted by brothers LIAM and NOEL GALLAGHER, are set to release their sixth album DON'T BELIEVE THE TRUTH on 16 May (05).

But that release date is no longer a certainty after illegal copies changed hands on eBay's UK site for GBP9.99 ($19). The music will likely soon be available for anybody to download using file-sharing software.

The online advertisement read: "This is a very rare, full-length copy of the forthcoming Oasis album Don't Believe The Truth. This is a CDR copy which comes with promo artwork. Don't miss this opportunity to this album before anyone else."

The internet trader, known only as KBROWN123, is believed to have made over $570 (GBP300) from the illegal sales.

Bosses at Oasis' record label SONY are tracking the anonymous seller down with help from eBay.

The source of the leak is likely to be a review copy of Don't Believe The Truth. However, the promotional CDs are "watermarked" allowing Sony to trace the original owner.

      Don't believe the hype ?

Don’t Believe The Truth (Big Brother Recordings)

Britpop bores are all mouth and no trousers

THIS sixth album had a nightmare gestation, beginning as a collaboration with dance producers Death in Vegas, being binned three times, taking in a terrible headlining Glastonbury slot and coming out 18 months behind schedule.

As ever, there were rumours of a rift between the grouchy Gallaghers, but both contribute tracks to the album, as do Gem and Andy Bell. The result doesn’t look promising. The band’s increasingly desperate leader has compared the new songs to everyone from Elvis, The Who and Bob Dylan to Soundtrack of Our Lives on Skol. What, no Beatles?

Despite Noel’s bluster, the first single, Lyla, has already been given a rough ride by fans. It gets an average rating of 2.5 out of 10 on XFM’s Oasis message board, where one fan suggests the chorus sounds a lot like Mona by Craig MacLachlan.

Note to Noel: throwing in a swirling siren sound isn’t enough to make a song exciting. Still, there are signs that a back-to-basics approach to writing lyrics might find favour with old fans. Part of the Queue, featuring the Cuban percussionist Lenny Castro, is apparently about waiting to buy a pint of milk, while the Liam-penned Love Like a Bomb, inspired by Julie Christie and described as a wistful follow-on from Songbird, should be worth a listen.

Andy Bell’s title track borrows its intro from Midnight Cowboy, although his other contribution, Keep the Dream Alive, inspired by David Essex in Stardust sounds like one to give short shrift.

They say “Our best record since Definitely Maybe. We stuck it out; we stuck to our guns and we pulled it off.”

We say Don’t believe the hype.

Verdict Don’t buy. Save your money for the DVD of this summer’s eagerly awaited live shows.

Released Single on May 16; album on May 30. A Polish DJ has leaked Lyla to the net. LV

Oasis Club Dates sell out in a snap

After going on sale at 9am this morning all the tickets for Oasis UK club dates taking place to mark the release of their new album ‘Don’t Believe The Truth’ have completely sold out.

Earlier this week Oasis announced that they'll be preceding their sold out summer stadium tour with a set of very special performances at a number of smaller UK venues throughout May.

As previously reported, tickets for the dates
(four in London and a Scottish date at Edinburgh's Usher Hall) went on sale this morning (Friday April 15) at 9am. However, Xfm can report that (not surprisingly) the dates have completely sold out, with all the tickets for all five events being snapped up within an hour of going on sale.

This means that the 13,200 available tickets (Astoria - cap. 2000, Usher Hall - cap. 2500, Clapham Grand cap. 1500, Coronet - cap. 2200 and Hammersmith Apollo cap. 5000) were being sold at a rate of over 220 a minute.

Not surprisingly tickets for all the dates have surfaced on eBay (in fact, many were on sale on the auction site before the tickets were officially available), with a pair of tickets for the Astoria show going for as much as £165.00.

Stay tuned to Xfm and check out www.xfm.co.uk for news of a special Oasis competition in the coming weeks.

Oasis’ new album ‘Don’t Believe The Truth’ will be released on May 30 while the first single 'Lyla’ will out on May 16. Both will be released on Noel Gallagher’s own Big Brother Recordings label. Watch the new video for 'Lyla' by clicking here.

      Bloc Party lables Oasis "lazy"

British rockers OASIS have come under fire from newcomers BLOC PARTY as they prepare to release their eagerly anticipated sixth studio album.

Oasis guitarist NOEL GALLAGHER has hailed his band's upcoming disc as their best work since debut album DEFINITELY MAYBE - but their POSITIVE TENSION rivals brand Oasis' distinctive sound "lazy".

Drummer MATT TONG says, "I always thought they were really lazy and unambitious."

While guitarist RUSSELL LISSACK adds, "Looking back they wrote some good pop songs, but I remember at the time really detesting them."

Lyla was not the band's choice for single

Outspoken Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher is furious with music giants Sony for releasing Lyla as a single against the band's wishes.

The rockers intended to release a different track from their forthcoming album Don't Believe The Truth, but label bosses had other ideas.

The fuming frontman says: "If it was up to the band, that wouldn't be the single. It was the powers that be, whoever they f**king are, that decided the first single.

"It's a f**king scandal that as the leader of this group I don't get to pick what our fans hear first."

      Noel on Ticket pricing

OASIS star Noel Gallagher has attacked rock contemporaries U2 and The Rolling Stones for ripping off fans who see them perform live.

The WONDERWALL band are about to embark on a summer (05) tour to promote their forthcoming album DON'T BELIEVE THE TRUTH - and are determined to keep ticket prices low, so ordinary fans can afford to see them perform.

But Gallagher is angry other bands charge up to $190 (GBP100) for tickets.

He says, "It saddens me when I see bands like the Stones and U2 charging so much. They don't need the f**king money."

      Album Review

    1.Turn Up the Sun.
A BELTING opener. Starts with some gentle guitar before exploding into the classic Oasis wall of sound. Liam sneers over big drums and chords.
This should kick off the band's summer shows. Also features the first of many big pshchedelic guitar breaks on the album. 8/10

    2. Mucky Fingers.

Over to Noel, doing his best impression of BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN.
Angry ranting vocals over a choppy monotonous riff - a completely new stlye for noel. 7/10.

    3. You know all about it . 8 /10.

    4. Love Like a Bomb.
RAW and under-produced. With its simple words, it sounds like a liam number to me. "You turn me on, Love's like a Bomb, Blowing my mind".
But he sings it with such conviction it works.
There;s a lovely moment when the whole band lanch into Beatles-style harmonies. 7/10

    5. The importance of Being Idle.
The most experimental track on the album and quickly becoming my favourite. Starts of with a Russian-style (A WHAT!?) beat. Noel sings about the stress of working when u hate your job. He tries out a surprisingly beautiful falsetto loads of fairground organs. 9/10

    6. The Meaning of Soul.

SHORT, Fast and menacing. A dirty, driving R'n'B track complete wth mouth organ. Rips-off the Rolling Stones famous 'All right Now, in fact it's a gas' chorus in jumping Jack Flash. 8/10

    7. Guess God thinks Iam Able.
A touching slow number that sounds like a reference to the relationship between Liam and Noel.
Over a simple guitar the lyrics go: "No one can break us, no one can take us". 8/10.

    8. Part of the Queue.
GUESS the influences!! This time its Golden Brown by The Stranglers.
Starts well but doesn't really go anywhere. We've hit a more patchy part of the album. 7/10.

    9. Keep the Dream Alive.

Lots of George Harrison-style guitar on this big work-out that sounds like something from 'The MAgical Mystery Tour.
Liam sngs: i'm no stranger to this place, where real life and dreams collide. 8/10.

    10. A Bell Will Ring.
A Welcome upturn which pulls no punches. A massive intro using Noel;s familer wash of guitars.
Clearly inspired by the Beatles 'Tomorrow Never Knows'. The partner To The Importance of Being Idle. 8/10.

    11. Let There Be Love.

Slightly dissapointing and weak finish - gentle piano and acoustic guitar.
BUT lots of intresting chord changes and a string selection. More filter then Thriller. 6/10.

    AVERAGE RATING : 7.63 / 10.

      Directors comments on Lyla Video

I think Noel saw my videos for Muse's 'Butterflies And Hurricanes' and The Prodigy's 'Spitfire' and he really liked them. We met up and he told me that I could pretty much do what I wanted. The only thing was that 'Butterflies And Hurricanes' and 'Spitfire' were really effects-heavy videos involving lots of post-production. Noel said to me 'I love your Prodigy video, but they're a techno band and we're a '60s nostalgia act.' So we tried to incorporate some technology, but keep it appropriate for the band.

"The song's got these really childlike lyrics and these lovely harmonies which reminded me of my parents old records from the '60s - things like The Hollies. But at the same time it's a total stomping guitar anthem. So what we wanted was like a dark fairy tale with a contemporary twist. We tried to incorporate a sort of otherwordly Alice In Wonderland feel. (Stanley Kubrick's) Eyes Wide Shut was also a big influence. Basically it's about a girl who has a shit life going to a party in her garage. Or it's a contemporary urban narcotic fairytale, depending on your point of view.

"We filmed it at a place called The Round Chapel in Hackney in east London. I think it was very exciting for local residents. It made the cover of the Hackney Gazette and the band stopped to sign autographs for locals. The band played live, which was a risk for us because you can't talk to each other in-between takes if the band keeps playing. Still, they enjoyed it: they were jamming and generally messing about. I think they played an inpromptu version of The Who's 'My Generation'. The kids in the audience just loved it - I kept overhearing people saying, 'I can't believe we're getting a private Oasis gig.'

"Oasis were consummate professionals. They were obviously having fun. A lot of my queue were slightly concerned because of Oasis' reputation in the past but they couldn't have been nicer. It was a real treat."

    (Dir . Tim Qualtrough )

The video for 'Lyla' will be shown on MTV2 from 11pm onwards on Wednesday

Oasis to play small venues prior to album release

Following the first play of the new Oasis single 'Lyla', the band have confirmed they are in the planning stages of a series of small venue gigs in the run-up to the release of their forthcoming album 'Don't Believe The Truth'.

So far, the band have only confirmed one of the three proposed shows at the Olympia in Paris on May 23, but more dates, including a rumoured London show, are expected to be announced shortly.

Tickets for the Paris gig go on sale on April 7 with a band spokesperson explaining, "This show is part of a set of yet to be announced special performances at smaller venues in the lead up to the release of 'Don't Believe The Truth'."

    Tickets for the show can be purchased from the following outlets www.fnac.com (+ 33 (0) 892 68 36 22) or www.ticketnet.fr (+ 33 (0) 892 390 100)

The album is released on May 30 and will be preceded by new single 'Lyla' on May 16. The single, whose artwork can be seen above, received it's first play on the Xfm Breakfast Show yestersay (April 4) but if you missed it, you can here it again on Xfm from these times on these shows today (April 5):

    12.00am - Marsha
    3.00pm - Ian Baker
    5.00pm - Laren Laverne
7.00pm - Music Responce with Ian Camfield

Listen in by tuning in on 104.9FM or listen online by clicking here.

In recent interviews, Noel Gallagher has variously described the track as “Our poppiest thing since ‘Roll With It’ Annoyingly catchy. A bit like The Who.” and as “The Soundtrack Of Our Lives doing The Who on Skol in a psychedelic city in the sky (or something).”

Following the official single release statement claiming “‘Lyla’ is ‘Sally’s sister…” Noel Gallagher has revealled that the Lyla in the song is the sister of the Sally mentioned in the Oasis single ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’ and the classic Stone Roses track 'Sally Cinnamon'.

Oasis will also be embarking on an extensive world tour that includes nine huge shows in the UK, including seven stadium gigs. Tickets for these dates sold out in record time, but the band will be headlining the V Festival alongside Franz Ferdinand and Scissor Sister
