Look Back at Britpop Hits the Big Screen

    By Jason Hopps
LONDON (Reuters) - Remember when Oasis made great albums, British fashion was king of the catwalk and the Spice Girls ruled the charts around the world?

For a fleeting flicker in the mid 1990s, Britain was definitely the coolest place to be, London was swinging again and "Britpop" was the triumphant music of a new generation.

A few short years after it all fell apart, London-born filmmaker John Dower has cast a loving eye back on Britain's coolest groove since the 1960s in "Live Forever," a documentary he wrote, directed and named after a seminal Oasis hit single.

"In mid-nineties Britain the music was great, our art and fashion were recognized all around the world and it was a time when it all intertwined to produce a special feeling," Dower, 32, told Reuters in an interview in his London office.

Featuring lengthy interviews with Britpop's biggest stars -- Noel and Liam Gallagher of Oasis, the lanky Jarvis Cocker from Pulp and Blur's Damon Albarn -- "Live Forever" documents 90s cool Britannia from drug-fueled birth to sudden death.

The film argues that the 1990 downfall of Conservative Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and the 1994 suicide of U.S. Grunge icon Kurt Cobain cleared the musical and political decks, allowing a new British culture to thrive.

A third element -- the "love drug" ecstasy, a favorite at outdoor rave parties -- gave the scene an extra kick.

"Britain was an awful place in the 1980s. If you were young and into popular music and culture it felt like an alienating and divisive place to be because of Thatcher," Dower said.

"But suddenly in the 90s there was a confident music and style...Bands were self-consciously making very British music and part of that was a reaction against American music, especially the dominance of Grunge," he said.

    SPICE GIRLS

"Live Forever" documents the media-fueled battle between Blur and Oasis and also touches on the Spice Girls, the girl group who rode the wave of cool Britannia to the top of the music and movie charts.

When Tony Blair and the Labor party swept to power in 1997 the revolution was seemingly won. In fact, the end was near.

"When it ended, it ended very quickly, and I think the death of Princess Diana in August 1997 is very significant," Dower said.

"We had a rock and roll attitude but when Diana died sentimentality took over, and then we had Elton John and Robbie Williams, who became the new sound of the more caring and ultimately bland and more dull Britain."

Today, Oasis aren't the musical force they once were and Blur's Albarn leads peace rallies against Blair's hawkish stance on Iraq.

Perhaps Noel Gallagher best sums up the swift demise of Britpop and the country's current love affair with manufactured, made-on-TV pop bands: "The choreographers have taken over the world," Gallagher says in the documentrary.

"Live Forever" opens in British theaters in March. Dower also hopes to release the film across Europe and North America.

Noel records track for Mississippi All Stars new Album

Oasis' Noel Gallagher drops in on band's third album POLARIS

    More live, more raw

They've already released two albums since 2000, so it seems unlikely that the North Mississippi All-Stars' third, Polaris, has been in the works since 1999. But the blues-rocking mad scientists have just been following a plan they established in the late-Nineties. Polaris, due April 22nd, follows the band's 2000 debut, Shake Hands With Shorty, and 2001's 51 Phantom.
"As we were working on the first record, we knew that we'd do it, produce it by ourselves and it'd be mainly covers," says singer/guitarist Luther Dickinson. "We also knew the second record would be produced with our dad [legendary producer/sideman Jim Dickinson] and be originals and the third record would be the big concept record [laughs], the big one."

The band -- now a four piece including Luther, his drummer/guitarist/vocalist brother Cody, bassist Chris Chew and guitarist Duwayne Burnside -- recently returned from Abbey Road Studio in the U.K., where the album was mastered, resulting in a last minute guest appearance by Oasis' Noel Gallagher, who appears on the title track and "One to Grow On." The mastering process, however, was less nomadic than the album's creation. The All-Stars are genuine road warriors, logging north of 200 gigs per year, a commitment to performing that doesn't always jive with a prolific release schedule of an album every year-and-a-half. "We both wrote a lot of this on the road," Luther says. "When we started working on this record, we thought, we have to get a computer. So Cody was recording vocals in the van while we were at sound check. Some of it was recorded in hotel rooms."

"One of the things I want to get across is that sense of 'How did they do that?,'" Cody says. "I think people are also gonna think, 'When did they do that?' when they listen to this record, because we tour constantly. The truth of it is we did a lot of it on the road, and that gives the music an energy and life of its own. "

No big surprises at the Brits

    excerpt from Times online :

While the British singles charts are clogged with personality-free, manufactured pop acts, the Americans created Avril Lavigne, an 18-year-old singer-songwriter who has married grungey teen angst with marketable pop/rock songs.

British top-sellers such as Coldplay, David Gray and Craig David are happy to let their music do the talking, while their US counterparts seize the headlines.

Coldplay, winner of the best British group and album awards, also pressed home the anti-war message, aware that the awards were being broadcast on ITV1 last night. The singer, Chris Martin, said: “We are all going to die when George Bush has his way, but it’s good to go out with a bang.” Coldplay are now established as Britain’s leading rock band, replacing Oasis.

    The winners are..

British male solo artist — Robbie Williams
British female solo artist — Ms Dynamite
British album — A Rush Of Blood To The Head, Coldplay
    British group — Coldplay
British single — Just A Little, Liberty X
British urban act — Ms Dynamite
    British dance act — Sugababes
British breakthrough artist — Will Young
    Pop act — Blue
International male solo artist — Eminem
International female solo artist — Pink
International album — The Eminem Show, Eminem International Group — Red Hot Chili Peppers
International breakthrough artist — Norah Jones
Outstanding contribution to music — Tom Jones

Oasis was a no show at these awards....

Oasis 14-1 outsiders for top Brits

    Coldplay tipped for top Brits

The bookies are favouring Coldplay to triumph at tomorrow night's Brit Awards in the Best Group and Best Album categories.

Ladbrokes stands to lose thousands of pounds if the group follow up their success at last week's NME awards with two more gongs.

The band are 4-11 to scoop best group, with Oasis the rank outsiders at 14-1. They are also 4-7 to win best album, followed by Ms Dynamite at 3-1 and The Streets at 6-1.

Robbie Williams is 4-5 favourite to be named best male, with The Streets at 3-1 and Badly Drawn Boy at 5-1.

A recent poll by more than 600 record buyers also named Coldplay and Robbie, as well as Ms Dynamite, as the people's choice to take top honours at ceremony.

Ms Dynamite, who landed the Mercury Music Prize last year, is the popular choice for at least a trio of prizes.

Customers at HMV reckoned she should win best British female, best British album for A Little Deeper and best breakthrough artist. She is also nominated for best urban act.

Pregnant Ms Dynamite, whose real name is Niomi McLean-Daley, is on a roll after landing three Mobos last year. She will perform George Michael's Faith at the awards.

      LIAM IS LIKE BEETHOVEN!

LIAM GALLAGHER is like BEETHOVEN, COLDPLAY’s CHRIS MARTIN has said.

Speaking this morning (February 19), Martin rhapsodised about Liam and 'Songbird' - the first song that Liam had penned for Oasis to be released as single.

"I think it is the most beautiful song in the world," he said. "It makes me cry that song - that is such a heartfelt beautiful song. Liam Gallagher always gets some bad stuff but its like Beethoven in that film about Beethoven - his girlfriend says how could I not love him cos he writes such beautiful music... anyone who can write something like 'Songbird' is basically alright by me."

Martin also revealed that of all the gongs picked up by Coldplay at last week's NME Awards, his mother is most proud of his Sexiest Man In Rock triumph.

He said: "My mum... of all the awards we've won... the one she is proudest of is the Sexiest Man Award for her son. And it's so funny because of all the girls that turned me down when I was 13... I'm bitter you know."

He also had some tips for other young men, keen to front hugely successful rock bands, date Hollywood stars and pick up Sexiest Man gongs.

"My tips are start receding, get spots and wear the same jacket all the time," he said.

Speaking on Sara Cox's breakfast show on BBC Radio 1, Martin also said he thought The Streets or Miss Dynamite would pip Coldplay to Best Album award at tomorrow's (February 20) Brit Awards.

TIME FOR NOEL'S BEST EVER SONG?

NOEL GALLAGHER claims to have written a brand new song that is "the best I've ever written".

As NME revealed recently, Noel has been in and out of the studio in the early part of this year, putting down ideas for Oasis songs that could feature on the follow-up to last year's 'Heathen Chemistry'. Noel said that one of the new songs, 'Stop The Clocks', has gone down well.

"People are saying it's the best song I've ever written," he told Teletext. "And that's from mates outside the band who were: 'Aye, that's OK,' when I played 'Wonderwall' to them for the first time."

Oasis play live in Germany next month, rearranged shows following the incident in a Munich nightclub which resulted in Liam losing his teeth.

      Silent Liam

    Liam goes nuts

Just a week after kicking a taxi cab passenger from his seat Liam strikes again. Scheduled to do a sit down interview for a music documentary on the British music scene Liam reportedly decided not to answer any of the journalists questions but rather to stare him down. The producer had no choice but to pull the plug on the interview. He wants to give Liam his own segment in the documentary now : Rock'nRoll's 'pile of puke' #1

    original article:

      Stop The Clocks !

It's the worst-kept secret in music: Noel Gallagher is the most affable, helpful rock star there is - he even spells names of his current favourite bands such as the Hokum Clones.

Waving away Oasis' manager, who asks if Teletext has got official PR clearance to interview him after the NME Awards, Noel is happy to talk about the future of Oasis and his retirement plans.

And bandmate Gem Archer greets us with: "Hey, Teletext! You keep it real..."

Although pleased to win two NME Awards, Noel reckons it shows up the lack of classic bands at the moment.

"There's usually one classic, defiant band around that's swept away all that went before them," he explains.

"You had the Sex Pistols, then Smiths, then Stone Roses and then us. Since us, that thread's been lost a little bit. I've been waiting too long for someone to come along and show us wrong. Which I want to happen, so I can retire!"

Noel thinks the next classic band may emerge from Liverpool.

"As a Manc, it's horrible to have to admit, but Scouse bands like The Coral, the Hokum Clones, The Zutons and The Bandits are all exciting," he states.

"The ones that look really special are The Stands - La's meet Dylan and all kinds of weirdness. They might be the classic 'screw you' band we need. I like Travis and Coldplay, but they're 'thank you' bands, not 'screw you'."

While joking about retirement plans, Noel is already excited about one song for Oasis's next album.

"It's called Stop The Clocks and people are saying it's the best song I've ever written," he enthuses. "And that's from mates outside the band who were: 'Aye, that's OK,' when I played Wonderwall to them for the first time.

"I've got so bored waiting for The La's to come back that it sounds like how I'd want them to if they did return."

Liam has written more songs than he has although he hasn't heard them Gem has and he says they are fantastic but noel says if they are not done properly than he wont listen

"It's like handing in his homework"

While Oasis have been demoing new songs, Noel insists there is no masterplan for the next album

"I just want it to sound better than the last one"

    Gem adds

"I think its going to be alot rawer, less polished, basically i think were going to sound bad again"

Noel thinks there are no classic bands around and that they were the last band to come along and blow everyone away. This also hints at his retirement.

"As soon as they come along i can retire"

      OASIS SINGER UNDER ATTACK

Liam Gallagher has denied claims he kicked a passenger out of a taxi on a night out with girlfriend Nicole Appleton.

He protested his innocence after marketing executive Lennon Mortimore claimed he was abused when the pair clashed in London's West End.

The Oasis singer has tried to keep a low profile after his scuffle in Munich in December in which he lost his two front teeth.

"I got in a taxi, he jumps in, starts pulling things out of his pocket and I've gone, 'Hey, what are you doing', said Liam.

"He started babbling on, so I threw him out.

"I didn't beat him up, I didn't kick him in the face, I didn't do anything.

"I'd never drag anyone out of their taxi. I opened the door and politely guided him out.

"It's starting to do me head in. You know, I went out for a decent night. I don't go out much."

Gallagher stayed away from the NME Awards earlier this week to avoid any trouble.

      Charming Liam

I had that Oasis bloke in the back of my cab

Nice shoe meet you ... Liam kicks Lennon

Here's Ole Monkey Face surpassing himself once again.

LIAM GALLAGHER’s weekend antics were bad even by his standards.

His shenanigans came to a head as he left London’s Soho House club with

fiancée NICOLE APPLETON at 1.30am on Saturday.

Room for two more ... Liam turns on charm

He lunged towards a snapper, shouting: “Leave us alone, **** off, you ****ing w*****.”

Desperate to get him home, Nicole leaned in the window of a taken taxi and agreed

    to share with the passenger.

But Liam waved his foot in the bloke’s face, accusing him of trying to steal his ride.

Raring to go ... Liam and Nicole outside club

He shouted: “What the **** are you doing in my cab?”

He then forced the guy out – after making him pay the outstanding fare.

A guest at Soho House said: “Liam was totally out of it, banging into

    tables and stumbling everywhere.”

Nicole says new Oasis single left her in tears

Nicole Appleton says she burst into tears when she first heard Oasis's new single Songbird - because it is about her.
She says she feels very special that Liam Gallagher penned the track specially for her.
It entered the UK charts at number three on Sunday, behind Tatu and Justin Timberlake.
Nicole told The Sun: "Normally I only cry while slicing onions but the first time he played it to me I burst into tears. I'm very chuffed. I feel very special.
"It's amazing to have something like that written for you by the person you love. I close my eyes and can still remember exactly when he played it to me the first time. It was amazing," she said.

      Songbird's Flight Stopped

Controversial pop act t.A.T.u. have retained their hold over the singles chart as 'All The Things She Said' spends a second consecutive week at the top of the UK singles chart.
Hotly tipped favourites for this week's number one, Oasis' 'Songbird' settle for a disappointing number three entry, making way for Justin Timberlake's 'Cry Me A River' which enters at two.

      LIAM'S THIS MORNING GLORY

Rock bad boy Liam Gallagher once had "the hots" for former This Morning host Judy Finnigan.

The Oasis star used to fancy the Channel 4 presenter - because she reminded him of TV beauty Glynis Barber.

The shock revalation came from Liam's fiancee Nicole Appleton, who let slip her boyfriend's secret as she appeared on Richard and Judy's chat show, called Richard & Judy.

And Judy confided that the attraction to the singer was mutual.

Nicole said: "I must confess that Liam did say to me that when you he was younger and you were doing a TV show up in Manchester that he had the hots for you.

"You reminded him of the lady from Dempsey and Makepeace

      Reviews are in

Released on Mon 3 Feb 2003
    Label : Big Brother
    Oasis artist area

It's difficult to work out what is more remarkable: that Oasis remain so blindly, violently idolised, or that Liam Gallagher has managed to write a couple of really striking tunes.

This is a man who, in the hilarious 'Live Forever' Britpop movie, decides the interviewer is calling him "a bird" when questioned about his "androgynous" appeal. Liam's unwitting comic appeal and an infinite desire to drag his knuckles through rock'n'roll's primal gravel, both suggest that songwriting with any brevity was well beyond him, let alone Oasis.

Far from it. The subtly devastating, two-minute 'Songbird' - one of precisely four special tracks on 2003's spectacularly ordinary 'Heathen Chemistry' - is startling for both its warm, instrumental meander and the totally un-Neanderthal sensitivity in the lyrics.

And beyond the exhumed from the grave Lennon whine, there is none of the bluster, malaise and bullshit, rather the star of a band who once ruled the world, still sparkling dimly on the horizon.

      7th #1 Hit for Oasis ?

Rock bad boy Liam Gallagher looks likely to have his first self-penned number one single this weekend, figures showed today.
His band Oasis's track Songbird is heading for the top to give the band their seventh number one, displacing controversial duo Tatu.
It will be the band's first chart-topper since last April with The Hindu Times.
Liam - who lost his front teeth in a fight in December - only tried his hand at songwriting on the group's fourth album Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants with the track Little James.
The snappy acoustic track Songbird is the first of his songs to be released as a single and was inspired by fiancee Nicole Appleton. She makes an appearance in the video.
Liam's brother Noel usually takes care of songwriting duties.

      Songbird flying high

LIAM GALLAGHER looks set to celebrate his first No1 as a songwriter on Sunday with Songbird. Midweek sales show the OASIS singer set to knock TATU’s All The Things She Said off the top spot next week. Songbird was written for fiancée NICOLE APPLETON and is only the fourth track Liam has ever had recorded by the band. Songbird will be the seventh No1 for Oasis – if it hangs on to the top spot.

      Noel's got heart...

Even Noel Gallagher, usually a poster boy for grumpy stoicism, has recently been moved to admit he's prone
to a drunken weep at the Smiths' There Is A Light, and it's just a short wallow from Morrissey to Michael Bolton.

      THE OASISBOURNES

FOUL-mouthed Oasis star Liam Gallagher is doing an Ozzy Osbourne with a fly-on-the-wall TV documentary.

His madcap antics are exposed in a reality show about his fiancee, ex-All Saints singer Nicole Appleton, 28, and her sister Natalie, 29.

In Appleton On Appleton, viewers will see joker Liam:

TEASE Nicole and Natalie about their solo music careers.

SWEAR at his mum in front of Natalie's six-year-old daughter.

LEAP up and down in an Alan Partridge-style cardigan to entertain his 18-month-old son Gene.

Liam, 30, is also seen bouncing on a trampoline and speeding on a quad bike.

As elder Appleton sister Lee films the girls talking about their careers, gobby Gallagher jokes: "I feel like f***ing Abba".

And just like MTV star Ozzy (left) and his blunt-speaking wife Sharon, Nicole tells Liam he's "full of s***".

At dinner, Liam mocks tipsy mum Peggy to camera: "It's f***ing 10.15, Mum's had a couple of drinks so she doesn't know what time it is." Then he calls to her: "It's three in the f***ing morning, love."

The show will be on digital channel BBC3 next Sunday.
