Noel Gallagher on joining U2 on stage: 'It was a blast, a real honour'

Noel Gallagher  (Photo: Paul Bachmann for Live4ever Media)

Noel Gallagher  has described performing with U2  at the O2 Arena in London earlier this week as a ‘dream come true’.

Gallagher’s performance of ‘I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For‘ with the Irish supergroup caused something of a stir online, especially when he was photographed unassumingly taking the London Underground to the gig.

And he’s told Music News the moment was just as memorable for him, as he also covered The Beatles ‘ ‘All You Need Is Love‘ during the guest appearance.

Glastonbury budget not big enough for an Oasis reunion

Photo:  Paul Bachmann for Live4ever Media

Noel Gallagher was out in public last night (October 28th) – at the London premiere of Bradley Cooper’s new film Burnt – which naturally resulted in one or several hundred microphones being shoved in his face asking about an Oasis reunion.

The band, which split amidst flying plums and broken guitars in a Paris dressing room back in the summer of 2009, nevertheless remains one of the bookies’ favourites to headline the 2016 Glastonbury festival, as it has done for several years running now despite the elder Gallagher brother’s constant denials.

Bono welcomes " his hero" Noel Gallagher on stage at U2 gig

Noel Gallagher is not a fan of many things, but one thing he is a fan of is U2. He really likes U2! He attended a U2 concert in San Jose back in May, at the beginning of their ongoing Innocence + Experience Tour, and this is what he had to say about it:

I thought it was as great a leap forward…It was theatre. It starts off as a punk rock gig but then it gets intimate, there’s a lot of truth in it about where they come from and the people that they are…I’ve been a fan since hearing “New Year’s Day” in 1983 and I’ve seen them loads of time. With the greatest respect in the world when I saw the 360° Tour I thought that was the end of something, and not in a bad way. I thought, this is so staggering and huge and tall, so amazing, I thought this was the end of something and I wondered what the beginning of the next thing will be — and here it is. It was staggering — and only the fourth show. I can’t wait to see it again.

Well, he did get to see it again — but this time, he actually got to be in the show. At U2’s gig in London last night, the former Oasis guitarist joined the band onstage to perform “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,” playing acoustic guitar and singing along with Bono.

Noel Gallagher gives Stone Roses fans hint

Noel Gallagher  has offered up the tiniest hint that the Stone Roses may yet emerge with a new album.

During an appearance on the British breakfast show Soccer AM on Saturday (October 24th), which helped to promote his recently announced 2016 UK arena tour, Gallagher was asked by host Fenners if he had ‘any idea’ what the current status of the Manchester band is, and replied coyly by saying that they are ‘blooming’. Check out a part of the interview below.

Again, it’s a small chink of light right enough, but it’s something nonetheless for fans to cling to as hopes of a third studio album from the Roses have gradually faded since a 2012 European comeback tour was completed virtually without incident.

When that unlikely return was confirmed at a press conference sometime back now in October 2011, frontman Ian Brown immediately talked up the prospects of a follow-up to 1994’s polarising ‘The Second Coming‘, and other sporadic reports in the media kept the gossip flowing as Brown and bandmate John Squire‘s apparent new music was at one point described as ‘psychedelic pop’. Since then however, the stories have gone cold.

Our fingers are now crossed once again though.

Noel Gallagher wants his sons to form a band like Oasis

    photo : Paul Bachmann/ Live4ever Media

Speaking at the Q awards, the founder of the Britpop icons said he would not discourage his sons Donovan (8) and Sonny (5) from following in his footsteps.

"No, because we were f**king great. I don't know if you heard but we sold like 70 million fucking albums" he said.

However, Gallagher said he won't be teaching his kids how to play guitar.

"I can't teach anyone because I just kind of magicked it up.

"So my lad has got a drum kit in his bedroom and a guitar, I don't know what he's trying to do fu**ing at both of them at the same time or something.

"He's also left-handed, which is slightly annoying," he said.

Gallagher said if musical instruments are "lying around the house" children are more likely to pick them up.

"I don't say, 'guitar lessons today from three until quarter past'. If they do it they do it, and if they don't they don't.," he added.

He also admitted that his sons are more interested in hip-hop than his music.

''They're not listening to me that's for sure. They listen to a lot of hip hop which is lightly annoying.

"They listen to what they're mum listens to and she's kind of urban as well. Hip-hop hasn't grown on me, to be honest," he said.

Andy Bell: Noel is really underrated as a lead guitar player

    Photo: Paul Bachmann/ Live4ever

Former Oasis bassist Andy Bell has admitted his life changed the first time he heard Liam and Noel Gallagher's debut album 'Definitely Maybe' in 1994.

The 45-year-old musician joined the 'Supersonic' band as their bass player in late 1999 as a replacement for original bassist Paul 'Guigsy' McGuigan and admits it was a dream come true for him to be part of the now defunct group because their debut album 'Definitely Maybe' had such a huge impact on him when it was released in 1994.

Andy - who played guitar in Liam Gallagher's post-Oasis band Beady Eye and is now back playing in his original group Ride - recalled: ''Oasis definitely did change my life when I first heard them! They were like a breath of fresh air. To put it into context, Ride were working on the third album, 'Carnival of Light', and we were taking a bit of a break. We were starting to get a bit frayed at the edges and we were starting to pull in different directions musically, too. We were really shooting for a kind of West Coast Byrdsy California sound mixed with a little bit of Led Zeppelin and a little bit of classic rock.

''I think we were also subconsciously trying to make a cleaner record, because we'd stopped getting played on the radio ... but then along comes Oasis sounding like the Jesus and Mary Chain meets the Sex Pistols and just completely blew everything out of the water!''

Andy also paid tribute to his former Oasis bandmate Noel Gallagher, insisting his skills as a guitarist are underestimated by too many people.

He told website MusicRadar: ''I just want to say that I think Noel's really underrated as a lead guitar player. His playing is like a John Squire-y thing, but there's a lot more muscle behind it. He kind of trademarked his own style, which has become something that everyone uses now - that massively overdriven sound with quite a lot of delay on it. [His playing] just sounded epic.''

Liam Gallagher on Lennon: The Icon

    Oasis

Today John Lennon  would have turned 75

"John Lennon means everything to me. Everything and nothing. I wouldn't say he's a better songwriter than McCartney, I'd say they're both different but great. But I like Lennon's stuff more 'cos it's a bit more beautiful, and it's more mad. McCartney's like Noel – he's too nice. Lennon was twisted and I like that kinda shit. His voice is the main thing I love. I like his speaking voice. That's pretty fucking mega. But his voice when he sings is the one. Political voice? Don't give a shit, couldn't care less about politics. But everything else – his singing voice, his songs, and his words – means the world to me.

I love the early rock'n'roll stuff as much as I like the later stuff he did, but right now my favourite period would be 'Strawberry Fields Forever'. There's this tune called 'Now And Then' which is one of the demos he did in India with George Harrison [It was actually a home demo made in New York in 1978 – Beatles Ed], and you should check that one out. I think they mixed it again like they did with 'Free As A Bird', but that song is fucking beautiful. As a songwriter, I don't think anyone's touched Lennon and I don't know if they ever will. [The La's'] Lee Mavers could have got near but he went down another road. Our kid's good, but he lacks that fucking madness that Lennon had. He's a normal chap who writes decent songs, and Mavers was too mad. But Lennon had all that and more. It's a constant thing with him, and I don't think I could ever get bored. You get bored of Lennon and you get bored of yourself, don't you? And I ain't bored of me…" (Liam Gallagher)
