      Everybody likes Kung Fu fighting

FIRST POSE FOR A BIT, THEN GRAB YOUR OPPONENT’S NADGERS: ANOTHER EVENTFUL NIGHT ON THE TOWN WITH OASIS

As well as writing the “best fucking songs in the world” during his year off, Liam Gallagher appears to have been taking kung-fu lessons.
After attempting to get an interview with the Oasis singer, a bemused NME newshound watched as Liam unleashed a dazzling series of martial arts moves at a gig in London last week.

Our intrepid reporter spent the night watching YOU AM I at Camden Dingwalls with Noel Gallagher before meeting Liam at the bar. During a discussion about the UK’s favorite music newspaper, Liam quipped: “I don’t believe in music papers – you only print crap,” before proudly declaring, “I write the best fucking songs in the world.”
Later, while NME shared a beer with Noel, Liam sauntered over and told our man to “fuck off”. He again jokingly said “fuck off” before stepping back and executing a series of kung-fu stances that wouldn't have looked out of place in The Matrix Reloaded. Noel and Nicole Appleton stood laughing at the bar as Liam displayed his moves. Liam then escorted the confused NME journalist out. Smiling, he returned to the bar to resume drinking with Noel and Nicole.

Earlier that night, a photographer was faced with the difficult decision between saving his picture or his reproductive organs, when Liam grabbed hold of his particulars until he stopped snapping. “He said he was happy to have a picture taken but then he grabbed my balls, so I stopped,” said the relieved snapper. “He was clapping with the music for a bit, so I thought I’d give it another shot but then he started clapping in front of my face so I decided it might be a good time to leave!” NME’s reporter has now enrolled in a karate club at his local church hall, while our photographer’s voice is gradually returning to its normal pitch. As NME went to press, Liam’s part in the next Matrix film remained unconfirmed.

      Gallaghers broke ?

Honey, you wait here . I forgot your credit card........Noel seen shopping with on/off girlfriend Sarah McDonald at Chanel Store in London bigpictureUSA

A UK TV show reported that "it's highly unlikely the Gallagher's checkbooks are still balanced". One should worry, this after Liam and Noel reportedly have spent 50 million Euros over the past years with their Exs and current partners. A' friend' added : "It's bad. Their CD's don't sell anymore but they are throwing money around like in the good old days. At this rate they'll end up broke like other has been rockers before them....."

      13 new Oasis Songs

NOEL GALLAGHER has revealed to NME.COM that OASIS already have an album's worth of new songs written for their next album.
Speaking last week, Noel said that between him, guitarist Gem Archer and brother Liam Gallagher, 13 songs are now written for the follow-up to 'Heathen Chemistry'. No date has yet been set for the release of the new album and it's not expected until late 2004 at the earliest. "I've got about five songs done, Liam's got about six, and Gem's got a couple," Noel said. Liam also spoke about his songs, telling NME.COM: "My songs are the best fucking songs in the world - I write the best fucking songs in the world." Although the band have been 'officially' taking a year off, an impromptu set from Noel and Gem at The Bandits' Bandwagon club night in Liverpool (May 3) featured newie 'Stop The Clocks' and gave fans a glimpse into what the new album might sound like. Other working titles for tracks are rumoured to be 'They Ain't Got Nothing On Me', 'They Ain't `Got Nothing On You', 'Longer', 'Singin' Your Life', 'You Wanna Feel My Shame', 'Say It', 'Revolution Man' and 'The Good Rebel'. Noel revealed that the set in Liverpool was actually the result of a bet he made with a friend. He said: "I bet that if Man City won, I'd get up and play. I only said it because I didn't think that they'd win, so it came as a bit of a shock."

He also said that he misses playing small venues with Oasis. "Absolutely. But if we (did), 95 per cent of people wouldn't be able to get in. It's a shame, but I wouldn't rule out a secret gig - somewhere small - in a couple of years." He added, "It's a great time for music at the moment... there's so much great real music. The Kings Of Leon are my new f**king favourite band." The guitarist also commented on the new Radiohead sound, saying, "I heard the single. I like it because it doesn't annoy me. But then again with Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood in a band, they're going to be great, put them together and you get genius." "But I don't get the whole angst thing," he mused. "I don't likeThe Vines, except for 'Get Free' - great track, but what have they got to be pissed off about? They live in Sydney, the most beautiful city in the word. The Coral come from Liverpool and they have the right to be pissed off, but they write beautiful songs about how great life could be - they are geniuses.
"Radiohead have sold twenty million albums and they're still miserable? I can tell you from personal experience - it's not that bad. Trust me."

      Sum love Gallagher's diss

Punk stars wear insults as badges of honour

Sum 41 don't care if you think they suck -- people more famous than you hate them even more. The Ajax, Ont., foursome have been dissed by everyone from Oasis's Noel Gallagher ("I'm just glad I lived long enough to hear the s--tiest band ever") to Blur's Damon Albarn, who called them a boy band with tattoos. But the Sums wear those insults as badges of honour. "When Noel Gallagher said that, that was actually a huge compliment that he actually knew who we were," says guitarist Dave Baksh. "To get slandered from names that big is pretty cool; we're used to local kids making fun of us. We've upped the ante a little bit." Indeed, Sum 41 are so proud of being insulted by the British rock stars they posted the quotes on their Web site.

      Liam's just dad for it

Full-time dad ... Liam with son Gene

HERE is LIAM GALLAGHER hard at work in his new job...as full-time dad. He’s got precious little to do these days apart from mope about after busy fiancée NICOLE APPLETON. Whenever Nicole and sister NATALIE have some business to attend to, the former “mad for it” prodigal son of Britpop trails along behind.

Sticking it out ... Liam greets my snapper

Brother NOEL – the brains of the Gallagher outfit – obviously doesn’t have any songs for Liam to sing at the moment, so it’s thumb- twiddling time for the shaggy-haired monkey boy. Yesterday was no exception. Liam whiled away the hours in London’s Regents Park by poking out his tongue and swaggering like a drunken chimp, while the Appleton sisters filmed a video for their new single Everything Eventually.

    Wonder-small ... Liam gives Gene a drink
as mum Nic, centre, and Nat watch

A long-faced Liam sat with Nicole’s mum Mary for hours while they waited for the girls to finish. And he busied himself giving son Gene some juice while Mummy and Auntie Nat frolicked for the video.

Sister act ... Nic and Nat lark about in grass during the shoot

Not very rock and roll, is it Liam? Some Might Say it’s about time you threw a tantrum.

Oasis gold record up for auction

SWAG. It’s the music industry term for the mountains of free promotional items that get passed around to music journalists, media personalities, record retailers and other industry types. Usually regular members of the public don’t get a chance to snag a whole lot of swag, save for a special time of the year when an event called the Swag Online Auction takes place.
Swag 2003 is a fundraiser for The Canadian Music Therapy Trust Fund. Dozens of prime rock stars have donated all sorts cool stuff, which will all be auctioned off on Ebay. The auction begins tomorrow (May 22) and continues on until June 1. In the past two years SWAG has raised $75,000 to support music therapy programs across Canada. Not bad.
This year the Swag people have put together a pretty choice assortment of items. There are a few very special one of a kind items that will surely go for top dollar, including one of the dolls from the Sum 41 "Hell Song" video, a shopping spree at Reebok Canada with Shawn Desman, an autographed Elton John piano seat, an autographed harmonica from Mick Jagger, a signed Lenny Kravitz guitar and a Grey Cup football signed by Shania Twain.
In addition to the big ticket items, there are dozens of posters and lithographs (including a bunch of Beatles album cover prints), an Oasis gold record for Heathen Chemistry, one of Avril Lavigne’s ties, a copy of the Coldplay issue of Chart Magazine signed by the band and plenty of CDs and DVDs. More items will be added throughout the auction.
For more information or to bid on any of the Swag items, check out the Swag store on ebay.ca

"Paul Weller Live" DVD features Noel

    'Paul Weller Live:
    Two Classic Performances'
    **** 1/2

    (YepRoc Records)
Paul Weller looks like an odd throwback.
In concert before thousands of faithful fans in London's Hyde Park, he sports sideburns that extend below his jaw line, a long paisley shirt with a Nehru collar and slick alligator skin shoes. While he may not look entirely in style, the one-time leader of the Style Council and punk-pop pioneers the Jam flaunts something that's still very much in vogue: a glorious White-soul voice and a sound that never feels outdated.
This rich DVD not only features a fabulous, 25-song electric concert from Hyde Park, it also shows another side of the artist that's no less compelling in a second show, a 13-song acoustic set that features guests Noel Gallagher from Oasis and ace keyboardist Jools Holland. Toss in a fun interview with the artist and you have a package that's a steal at less than $20.

Farewell Gig at Maine Road Ground

    Noel's gig farewell

OASIS are to fulfil their dream of being the last band to perform at Manchester City’s Maine Road ground when they play a charity gig on Friday. Blues fans NOEL and LIAM GALLAGHER will play for just 5,000 at the stadium before it is bulldozed in the summer. The brothers have waived their usual £200,000 fee to raise cash for the Beating Bowel Cancer fund. They will perform many of their hits to an audience of cancer sufferers and sponsors during the one-hour set. An organiser told me: “Oasis were very keen to play at Maine Road before it is knocked down.” The club moves to the City Of Manchester stadium which was used for last year’s Commonwealth Games. Tickets for the gig will not go on sale.

      The Last Party

    When Noel met Tony...

    The Last Party
Britpop, Blair and the Demise of English Rock

    excerpts of Q Magazine's review:

Noel Gallagher argues that his triumphant, pro Blair speech at the '96 Brits was really nothing : " We were off our heads that night, talking some right bullshit." Indeed, The Last Party ultimately admits there was never a truly meaningful detent between pop and parliament. Even as the love-in peaks with Gallagher and Creation boss Alan McGee being invited to 10 Downing Street, each is clearly using the other for as long as it suits.

Elsewhere, Blur fans may not laugh but shudder. Harris (author) is cool towards the culture-hopping Damon Albarn ("There's something worryingly Faustian about his aspirations." he notes), while his band appear to be nobody's friends: there's Blur vs Oasis, obviously , but also Damon vs Brett Anderson, Damon vs Graham Coxon and even Blur vs Pulp. " In a lot of ways, they were bigger c#nts than Oasis," sniffs Alex James.

Like everything that's a little bit music, a little bit politics, Britpop crashed. Blur moved left-field, the Oasis gang disintegrated, Elastica succumbed to heroin and we all realized Menswear were awful. The Last Party is a fine, bittersweet read. No need to dig out that Powder CD though...... Michael Leonard

      BOY BLUE FOR MEG

MEG Mathews clearly enjoyed having a younger generation of pop star on hand at this yacht party at the Cannes Film Festival.

Noel Gallagher's ex-missus opted for the company of Blue's Duncan James after being palmed off with a bodyguard. And her expressive finger gestures showed she felt the boyband star was man enough to protect the £250,000 necklace she'd borrowed. Owner Pascal Mouawad - Tara Palmer-Tomkinson's ex - wasn't so sure. But Meg just Blue him a kiss.

      Recording Tips for Oasis from....Blur

Damon Albarn plans to record in Baghdad

Damon Albarn says he wants to record Blur's next album in Baghdad. He says he has been considering it for years because he loves the Iraqi musical style. The singer hopes the album will help change the way Islamic culture is misrepresented in Western societies. Albarn told the Hamburger Morgenpost paper: "Even if everyone thinks I'm crazy. I love the way the Iraqis arrange strings and vocals." Speaking about rivals Oasis, Albarn suggested Liam and Noel Gallagher follow their idols and try to find enlightenment at an Ashram. "It makes me laugh every time I see how obsessed Oasis are with the Beatles and block all other influences," he said. "Even the Beatles left England for almost a year and got to know Indian culture. When they came back home they were the political Beatles

      'Nookie'less Liam

LIAM GALLAGHER and NICOLE APPLETON’s sex life is being ruined by their little boy GENE.

The pair can’t get jiggy between the sheets because the toddler insists on sleeping in their bed at night. Former ALL SAINTS singer Nicole says: “It’s not just the two of us now. It can be difficult, especially when Gene likes to sleep with us.” But the pair have found a solution to getting their nookie ration — making the most of Gene’s afternoon nap. Nicole adds: “I’m planning to have more kids one day. But at the moment I’m just enjoying Gene.” Meanwhile, Nicole’s sister NATALIE and her PRODIGY lover LIAM HOWLETT plan to start a family next year. Natalie says: “I’d love to have a baby with Liam, but first we want to do more things together. Maybe next year.”

      Oasis pass the mic

Queens Of The Stones Age, The Strokes, Oasis, System Of A Down and Huey Lewis are amongst the artists who have donated their microphones to a Hearing Aid Music Foundation charity auction.

Somewhat ironically for a charity dedicated to educating musicians and punter about protecting their hearing, HAMF has arranged a giant online auction of 50 autographed microphones from artists like Korn, Oasis, System of a Down, Queens Of The Stones Age, The Strokes, Styx and The Dixie Chicks.

The auction is expected to raise over $10,000 for the ‘Listen Smart’ educational film program and started on May 12 and runs until May 22. For more details click here.

So far Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull leads the pack with a $ 277.00 bid for his microphone, with Nickel Creek ($200.00), The Dixie Chicks ($150.00) and Korn ($102.50) not far behind. Elsewhere Noel Gallagher’s gob piece can be yours for $71.00 and a QOTSA mic will cost you $46.00 but The Strokes’ one is only worth a paltry $26.00.

A handful of the artists who have donated their sputum flecked vocal enhancers include,

Oasis, The Strokes, Ben Folds, Judas Priest, Korn, Black Crowes, Huey Bloody Lewis, Kelly Osbourne, The Eagles, Ozzy Osbourne, Cyndi F***ing Lauper, Queens Of The Stone Age, Jethro Tull, Adam Sandler, Smashmouth, The Dixie Chicks, Stone Temple Pilots, Sum 41, Styx, Billy Ray B*****s Cyrus, System Of A Down, Los Lobos, Wilco and Jennifer Lopez.

Liam writing loads of new songs

Is this the closest that British fans will get to seeing Oasis in 2003?

Despite taking most of this year off to recover from the Heathen Chemistry world tour, Noel Gallagher and bandmate Gem Archer grabbed their guitars for an impromtu set at The Bandits Bandwagon club night in Liverpool. The duo played 'Stop The Clocks', a new song which Noel has previously claimed to be 'the best i've ever written' alongside Oasis classics 'Talk Tongiht, 'Wonderwall', 'Don't Look Back In Anger' and 'Married With Children' NME's spy described 'Stop The Clocks', written at the end of the Heathen Chemistry sessions, as 'a cross between 'The Hindu Times' and 'Wonderwall', similar to late George Harrison-penned Beatles' It features the lyric 'Stop the clocks and leave it all behind /On the backseat of my mind'

'This is the smallest gig i've ever played, by a mile' Noel enthused to NME backstage. 'We toured with The Bandits last year and they kept saying, 'come up and play.' I came up to watch City and they asked me to do it. 'Cos i borrowed most of my guitars to The Bandits while they're making their album, all my stuffs up here anyway - so i was like, 'Why not?' Despite industry rumours of at least one show in 2003, a spoksperson for the band told NME that Oasis had no gigs planned this year, raising the possibility that Noel's set will be the only time he plays live in the UK until at least 2004. However, the band are keeping busy - especially Liam and Gem.
Noel added 'Liam's written loads of new tunes and, as much as it pains me to say it, they're amazing! i'm writing these six-minute long 'Champagne Supernova' things and Liam's writing all these three minute pop songs. He's got the blues, man. His new songs sound like The Yardbirds. He's been going into the studio loads with Gem. Gem's a really good sounding board' In addition to 'Stop The Clocks', rumours suggest new Oasis songs have working titles including 'They aint got nothing on me, they ain't got nothing on you', 'Longer', 'Singin' Your Life', 'You wanna Feel My Shame', 'Say It', 'Revolution Man' and 'The Good Rebel'

      Stop The Clocks (lyrics)

As with many demos, lyrics can change so these may not be the final version

    STOP THE CLOCKS (Demo 2002)

Stop the clocks and turn you love around
let your love lay me down
and when the night is over they'll be no sound
lock the box and leave it all behind
on the backseat of my mind
and when the night is over where will i rise?
and what if i'm already dead
    how will I know? (x2)
lost inside my head behind the wall
Do they hear me when I call?
and when the night is over
    where will i fall? (x2)
    but if i'm already dead
    how will I know (x2)
and now my fight is over they'll be no sound...

    Written by Noel Gallagher.

      Rolling Stone reviews Scorpio Rising

Death in Vegas are two British-club-culture alumni who -- much like Primal Scream -- create heavy grooves influenced by kraut rock, Sixties soul, weird folk and heavy dub. Scorpio Rising is an ambitious effort where acid-damaged instrumentals exist alongside songs sung by superstar guests. The fantastic title track is a full-on rocker, with Liam Gallagher of Oasis braying at his Lennonesque best. Hope Sandoval coos through both the mandolin-dappled "Killing Smile" and the blissed-out "Help Yourself." The only blunder is a Paul Weller-sung slog through the Gene Clark classic "So You Say You Lost Your Baby." It all adds up to an album that's transcendent in fits and starts, undermined by one too many celebs in the vocal booth.

Glastonbury Festival organisers are planning to release a definitive DVD of the annual event, dotmusic can report. Though very little footage of the early festivals exists, Glastonbury Television has been documenting performances since 1994, with some classic moments already in the can. Now organisers, stuck with arduous task of selecting clips from hundreds of hours of footage, want music fans to vote for their favourite Glastonbury moments.

Shortlisted performances include sets from Paul Weller, Beck, Beastie Boys, The Pretenders, The Verve, Supergrass, Jeff Buckley, PJ Harvey, Page & Plant, Elastica, Oasis, Pulp, Prodigy, Cast, Radiohead, Robbie Williams, Tori Amos, Foo Fighters, Catatonia, Tricky, James, Spiritualized, Ash, Hole, Manic Street Preachers, REM, Travis, David Gray, Moby, David Bowie, Coldplay, Stereophonics, The White Stripes, Badly Drawn Boy, Starsailor and Faithless.

To vote for your favourite performances, click HERE.

A release date for the official Glastonbury DVD will be announced later this year. Meanwhile, this year's festival takes place from June 27-29, with headline performances from both Radiohead and REM already confirmed.

Do you know who I am ?

WHEN Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher clapped eyes on pretty Julia Kerrigan at a Sydney pub, he motioned to embrace her. Ms Kerrigan told the rock wild man to "p . . . off". To which the stunned rocker replied: "Love, do you know who I am?" "Yes," she said. "And you're a d . . . head, regardless." She went on to tell him that he should use his American Express card to "buy himself a personality".

Liam ducks punch , Nicole gets thumped

LIAM Gallagher’s fiancée Nicole Appleton was punched in the head last night when a nut attacked the couple in the street. Oasis star Liam and Nicole were leaving a diner when the thug stormed up and began screaming abuse .He then swung at Liam, but the singer ducked and the blow caught ex-All Saints star Nicole, 28, on the back of the head. Liam “went ballistic” and began trading punches with the yob.

Liam, 30, said: “Someone shouted ‘Oi scumbag, I’m going to kill you!’ I was backing up, saying ‘I don’t want trouble’ when he swung. It hit Nicole. She’s got a bump and is really shaken. “You can’t go around punching women in the street. We’re giving a statement to cops.” Builder Jim Danahar, 30, saw the punch-up outside Nando’s in West Hampstead, North London. He said: “This nut just charged and started swinging.” Photographer Tom Lillington, 49, last night admitted hitting Liam in “a moment of madness”, saying he had a long-running feud with the star. He said: “I don’t recall hitting Nicole.”

      Springsteen Gig on again

    L4E Update

Bruce Springsteen's 50,000 sell-out Manchester concert will go ahead after a court ruling yesterday rejected local complaints. The Boss will play at the Old Trafford cricket ground at the end of the month, one of only three UK dates on his European tour, after Trafford magistrates overturned Trafford council's decision not to grant a licence, following complaints.

But the decision is a blow to campaigners. Jack Buxton, who lives 700 yards from Old Trafford, told the court that living next to the cricket ground when bands were playing was "like listening to a rock concert in bed. It's a cacophony of noise."

Old Trafford's neighbours also complained of the loutish behaviour of some Oasis fans when the Manchester band played last September.

But Springsteen's promoter, Harvey Goldsmith, said: "[Springsteen] is in control of the music and very aware of the environment. The fans are over 30 onwards." The Lancashire county cricket club's chief executive, Jim Coombes, said the club would suffer if the concert was cancelled. "The loss of the income would be in the region of £100,000 to £150,000."

      Footballer's motivation : Music

LONDON: The right music is key to a winning performance on the football pitch -- and US rapper Eminem comes top of the list for inspirational tunes, a British psychologist has found. The soundtrack to Eminem's film debut "8 Mile" tops a survey of footballers' favourite motivational music, the Guardian newspaper reported on Friday.

Rock artists such as Oasis and the Red Hot Chili Peppers also ranked in the top five, followed by Justin Timberlake, Robbie Williams, Kylie Minogue, Jennifer Lopez and Jay-Z.

      Noel's nuts for KFC

Noel Gallagher chartered a plane at a holiday paradise to fetch a a 99p fast food meal. The Oasis star jetted off from his island hideaway in search of a KFC outlet, according to his ex-flame Meg Matthews. "When I was with Noel, we spent a month in Mustique. He was writing and had turned the spare room into a studio," Matthews told the Daily Star. "The place was perfect - hot sun, great beaches, fantastic food and just about anything you could ask for, except Kentucky Fried Chicken. Not surprisingly, there isn't one there."

    Sounds ridiculous

Matthews, 37, said Noel was going crazy without his favourite feast, and went to an extreme to get it. "He had a big thing about KFC, so we flew to St Vincent to get some. "It sounds ridiculous flying somewhere for a KFC, though it's only an eight minute flight so it wasn't quite as extravagant as it sounds."
"Still, taking two flights to get a 99p meal is a bit over the top!" she said.

    'Stupid things'

This is not the first time that Noel has been seemingly frivolous with his money, but he blames drugs for most of it. "I spent a lot of money buying stupid things while I was on drugs," he said. "I've got a fleet of cars. Yet I have never learned to drive." Oasis biographer Paolo Hewitt said that Noel also has an enormous collection of footwear. "Noel is the Imelda Marcos of British pop. He has hundreds of pairs of shoes," he says. Friends of the musician claim that when Gucci bring out a new line of trainers, he buys every pair in Liam's size so that his brother is never seen wearing the same shoes as him.

      Goodbye Maine Road

LIFELONG Manchester City fan Noel Gallagher says his favourite Maine Road memory was the 5-1 derby win. The Oasis guitarist recalled the 1989 thrashing of Manchester United on the eve of the Blues' last Maine Road game before the summer move to the new stadium. The 35-year-old rock star and his brother Liam are expected to attend the match against Southampton. He lists midfielder Ali Bernarbia as the best City player and joked how he enjoyed watching "frightened" London football fans walking through Moss Side on dark rainy nights to attend mid-week games.

    Joyous
The Blues are due to move into the City of Manchester Stadium in time for the start of next season.Noel said: "Maine Road is where I saw my first football match and it's a shame it's going to be knocked down, but you've got to move on, I suppose. "I've got loads of good memories but the 5-1 hammering of United was a joyous occasion. "The worst memory was getting relegated against Luton when we went down for the first time during the 1980s and we have never really been the same since. "It will be weird this Sunday not having anything to play for. Normally with six games to go we have to win four to stay up or get promoted.

    Mega

"I haven't been to the new stadium but I have been shown a model and my mates say it's mega. "I think it will take a full generation of City supporters before it will feel like home. "At first it is going to feel like City are playing away and we are going to lose some of the songs like `Super City from Maine Road', which is a shame. If the move earns the club more money to buy better players it's a good thing, but we'll see." The interview with Noel will be played on the James Stannage show which starts at 10pm tonight (Thursday) on Key 103 and magic 1152.

Blur : Oasis Feud was cathartic...

If jumping up and down on an abandoned trailer in Morocco is what it takes for Blur front man Damon Albarn to find the right sound — so be it. One man's ranting antic is another's creative ritual, and this one turns up as the rhythmic squeaking on the track Gene by Gene from the band's just-released seventh album, Think Tank.
But it's also understandable that after 14 years, guitarist Graham Coxon finally decided he'd had enough of Albarn's calisthenics, and left the band in September last year, soon after work on the record began. The real reasons are unclear, although the band claims Coxon didn't show for a recording session. He claims he was sacked. To most four-piece rock bands, losing the guitarist would be tragic, a career-ending divorce. For Blur it was just another challenge: how can a guitar-based rock band make a record without a guitarist?

No one ever accused Albarn of backing down from a challenge. He has always been ready to struggle to get his own way, starting with the public potshots he exchanged with Oasis in the mid-'90s, during the media-fueled battle — mods vs. rockers redux — for the Britpop crown. "It was definitely cathartic," says Albarn on Blur's rivalry with Oasis. "For us it was more of a diversion than an impetus. It has always seemed a ridiculous coupling." He has a point: where Oasis was lager louts, Blur was college boys. And these days, with the Gallagher brothers still playing to the Britpop nostalgia crowd — churning out new records stuck in Oasis' mid-'90s towering guitar rut — Blur has been quietly growing, developing its sound and self-confidence. And with Think Tank, the band has produced its most mature and accomplished album to date — with or without its resident guitar slinger.

Despite the new breakthrough, Albarn says, "I don't mind if I'm still called Britpop. We are British and we are popular. It's actually quite an apt description." The band had recently pursued side-projects, notably Albarn's virtual dub band Gorillaz, which sold 5 million albums and allowed him to collaborate with an international mix of musicians. Some influences naturally stuck. "You can't help but move on from whatever point you last made music," says Albarn. "It maybe came out more than it would have done if Graham hadn't been absent. I was left to do the guitars and the only experience I've had was in West Africa on Gorillaz."

      O Brit-pop, where art thou

    (article excerpt)

The music of Blur has gotten ... well, blurrier.Gone are the crashing guitars and barreling beats of old, replaced by eerie clicks and disquieting murmurs. It's an odd collage, full of grisly textures and loopy sound effects. Thankfully, they're graced with enough firm melodies to keep the CD from drifting into an ambient mist.
Much of the credit, or blame, for this shift should go to the departure of this British band's founding guitarist, Graham Coxon. Reportedly, Coxon wasn't pleased with frontman Damon Albarn's stepping out with the hit side-project band, the Gorillaz - a group that leaned closer to a reggae and club sound than Blur ever allowed. The breaking point for Coxon, apparently, was the choice of rave-friendly DJ Norman ("Fatboy Slim") Cook as producer for "Crazy Beat," the single from Blur's new album. It's certainly a strange number for this one-time Brit-pop band to take on. Its hook sounds like Donald Duck being asphyxiated. And that's not even the album's oddest moment. Tied for that title would be Blur's punk take on Arabic music ("We've Got a File on You") and a song that sounds like Kraftwerk being disemboweled by Massive Attack ("On the Way to the Club").
On one level, these leaps mirror recent moves by R.E.M., another long-time guitar-oriented group that has become enamored of electronic mood music. But, then, Blur always had more adventurous tendencies than many gave it credit for. While the 12-year-old group has been acknowledged as a pioneer of the mid-'90s Brit-pop trend, it never rocked as conventionally as its rival bands in that movement, such as Oasis or Supergrass. Albarn and his crew have long had a taste for cockeyed sounds and eccentric production tricks.
While the band's early work reflected the social rituals of modern British life, the new album plumbs the unconscious depths of the inner life. It may not be an easy trip to take, but at least it brings us to places Blur, and we, haven't been before.

Oasis dig 'Take it and Run'

THE BANDITS have announced that their next single will be the highly-tipped 'TAKE IT AND RUN’.

The song, previously described in NME as "a thing of such genuine might and pop majesty that the Queen should bestow it a coat of arms" will be backed by a cover of the MC5’s 'Looking At You'.

Speaking exclusively to NME.COM about the new single singer John Bandit revealed how 'Take It And Run' was first born during a summer strumalong at Glastonbury 2000. "Me, Scott (bassist), (guitarist) Gary and a group of friends were all sat round the camp fire, and when Gary sings, he just gets a tear in his eye, but it's some medical condition he's got. People were sitting there saying, 'Christ he's crying, this is really special', but he couldn't help it."

Oasis have even fallen in love with the "summery, countryish, psychedelic song" after the two bands toured together last year. "They are well into it, Andy Bell said the song has guitar parts sent from heaven, it's his favourite song."

The Scouse six-piece are currently in the studio putting the finishing touches to their debut album, provisionally titled 'And They Walked Away', which is due to be released in late July and set to be a regular fixture at this summer’s festivals.

"We are talking about playing Reading and Leeds festivals, and we want to get Glastonbury, we are looking at going over to Japan to play at the Fuji Rock Festival, that would be amazing," he added.
