For the past 12 years the Gallagher brothers, of megaband Oasis, have been rock n'rolls bad boys. While Liam is Oasis' profane lead singer, it is Noel's songs that have turned the band into multi millionaires. Now Noel is touring solo, singing the Oasis hits and pedalling a new greatest hits collection.

Noel may have always dreamed of being a rock and roll star, but the usually confident Oasis patriarch freely admits even he is surprised with how well he has done."I couldn't play the guitar standing up until I was like 21, I didn't come out of the womb, you know, windmilling like Pete Townsend, I was a late developer in that respect," Oasis told Close Up while in Sydney recently. Oasis have always been much more than just the music.

The brothers Gallagher are two of the most controversial rock stars in the world - they swear non-stop, drink heavily and cause offence wherever they go.Oasis put the sex and drugs back into rock and roll"You owe it to the people who work in s*** jobs because. If you're working in a factory or in a shop or a construction worker you want to believe there are rock stars in the world shagging loads of women and taking loads of drugs. Being in the band is the single greatest thing in the world," says Noel.Gallagher is known for talking it up and over the years has had public feuds with everyone from Elton John to Robbie Williams.

One of his most recent outbursts even saw him predict Williams will take it his own life at some stage. "Those things are all said very tongue in cheek, you know what I mean but Robbie generally starts all this nonsense...it was all quiet on the western front for about a year, see it all be quiet now until he starts mouthing off about something."Then there were comments that British soldiers who have fought in Iraq should stop moaning about getting compensation for injuries they have suffered in the war. "I was in the states doing an interview and you heard these stories about soldiers, not British soldiers, soldiers in general, suing their respective governments because they got shot in the ass by an Iraqi or something...and the point I was trying to make was, call me old fashioned, but if you don't like getting shot at don't join the army," says Noel.His own brother isn't even safe from his rants. "At my kindest I would describe him as unpredictable at my meanest I would describe him as a f***ing idiot."But it seems all is fair in love and war as far as the Gallagher brothers go."He doesn't like me at all, but that's fine I can understand why he wouldn't like me, I can be a bit of a smug bastard."

The last and only time Oasis came to New Zealand, back in 1998, the brothers fought on stage during a concert. That followed a tour of Australia where Liam was arrested for headbutting a fan, while the band was kicked off a plane for being drunk.By the time they got to New Zealand they were in disarray. "I remember it not going so well. I don't really remember much about it, it was was f***ing awful as I shudder to think about it know...that whole period was bad,bad, bad." While Oasis have got no plans to come back to New Zealand, Noel has got some Kiwi friends. He counts Neil Finn as one of them and is a huge fan of Crowded House - Don't Dream It's Over is one of his favourite songs."I love that song, that song is incredible a great, great song and they're really nice guys those fellas," he says of the iconic Kiwi band.

Noel Gallagher is nearly 40, but he is happy to say he is pretty much still carrying on like he's 21"I smoke and drink probably a bit too much than I should. But drugs I think are for young people to dabble with, I think once you get to a certain age it's a bit sad to carry on taking drugs for the rest of your life, I haven't done any since 1998." Four years prior to that Oasis told the world they wanted to be the best band of all time. Noel can't quite remember that and thinks he may have been misquoted. "I've achieved more than enough for my personal satisfaction, more than I thought I was ever capable of doing I've had more than enough fun out of this game."

Oasis' album Stop The Clocks - an 18 track retrospective of the bands recording career - is out now and has had rave reviews.

The Brit Awards will feature Hollywood actor Johnny Depp on stage to present Oasis with their special achievement award.

The Pirates of the Caribbean star is a friend of Noel Gallagher, who will receive the gong for Outstanding Contribution to Music along with other band members. Previous recipients of the award include U2, The Beatles and Paul Weller.

Johnny was introduced to Noel by their then girlfriends Kate Moss and Meg Mathews and Johnny went on to play guitar on Fade In-Out, a song on the number one Oasis album Be Here Now.

A Brits source said: "This year it's going back to being broadcast live so the organisers have gone for huge names to spice it up."

Oasis refused to allow the Brits to use any footage of their videos at last year's ceremony because they were rumoured to be upset that they had not been chosen for the Best Band category.

But the special award will build bridges between the Brits and Oasis, giving them the recognition they missed out on previously.

Next year's spectacular will be opened by the Red Hot Chili Peppers on Valentine's Day and will be hosted by Russell Brand and Fearne Cotton

Kasabian played one of their biggest indoor shows ever tonight (December 19) in London.

The Leicester four-piece played a 90-minute set to a massive audience at Earl's Court as they rolled off hits from their 2004 debut and their Number One album 'Empire'.

Kicking off the set with instrumental 'Brown Acid', singer Tom Meighan eventually arrived onstage dressed in a long black trench coat for glam stomper 'Shoot The Runner'.

The band then performed the likes of 'Processed Beats', 'Reason Is Treason', 'The Last Trip' and 'Sunrise/Light/Flies'.

The show, which was watched by Oasis band leader Noel Gallagher, also saw guitarist Serge Pizzorno and drummer Ian Matthews perform an acoustic rendition of 'British Legion'.

Later in reference to Oasis' Earl's Court shows in the autumn of 1995, Meighan told the crowd as he launched into 'The Doberman': "I'm not often lost for words but tonight I am. We were here over 10 years ago and we wanted to be in a rock n roll band. If it wasn't for the likes of Noel and Liam Gallagher we wouldn't be here now. If you wanna be in a rock n roll band it will happen. You will have your time!"

There was a rare outing for 'Aponoea' which resulted in the frontman changing the words to 'A-wop-bop-a-loo-lop a-lop bam boo' from Little Richard classic 'Tutti Frutti'.

Rounding off the show with 'LSF' a visibly moved Meighan added: "This has been the best gig we have ever done, I swear to God. Merry Chrismas and a Happy New Year. We'll see you at Glastonbury yeah."

Hearing an acoustic, solo Noel Gallagher perform his band's magnum opus, Wonderwall, it was hard not to wish he'd sung it in the first place. Of course, it was his brother Liam - the surly one - who belted the Cool Britannia anthem out in his usual unmeasured style on the the 1995 Oasis release (What's The Story) Morning Glory?. (It was great, of course. Liam Gallagher has never been one of England's most technically proficient vocalists, but he is one of the most compelling.)

In the hands of its writer Noel - the curmudgeonly one - the song might not have had the energetic angst of the record, but it had light, shade and nuance and it was apparent the song actually meant something to its composer.

The feeling was typical of Noel Gallagher's performance during an intimate gig in Melbourne recorded for MTV's Live At The Chapel series on Monday night. The gig was held before Gallagher's sold-out show at Enmore Theatre in Newtown on Wednesday night.

Accompanied by Oasis guitarist Gem Archer and percussionist Terry Kirkbridge, Gallagher performed a handful of Oasis hits as well as a whole lot of B sides with which only fans, or those in possession of the recently released Oasis best of, Stop The Clocks, might be familiar.

Introducing the Kinks-esque 2005 British hit The Importance Of Being Idle, Gallagher called it the "last great song I wrote" with a wistfulness that provided a deliciously voyeuristic insight into the psyche of the loudmouth as artiste.

No such intro for Talk Tonight, the gorgeous B side of the hit Some Might Say. But Gallagher's delicate (yes, delicate) performance of a song containing the lyrics "I wanna talk tonight ... 'bout how you saved my life" left a lingering sense of his vulnerability and not just a whiff of boyish charm.

Gallagher hadn't gone completely soft though. A few choice digs at his favourite sources of derision, brother Liam and Robbie Williams, kept his motormouth rep well intact. His taped performance, Noel Gallagher At Vodafone Live At The Chapel, will screen on MTV December 26.

Oasis star Noel Gallagher has accused punk trio of "ripping off" his Wonderwall anthem for their hit Boulevard Of Broken Dreams.

Gallagher has been a long-time outspoken critic of the American Idiot hitmakers, but admits he was fuming the first time he heard their 2005 hit.

Gallagher explains: "If you listen, you'll find it is exactly the same arrangement as Wonderwall.

"They should have the decency to wait until I am dead (before releasing this). I, at least, pay the people I steal from that courtesy."

And the rocker's rant continues: "They consider themselves to be - and I quote - 'a kick-ass rock 'n' roll band'. They could not be less kick-ass if they tried."

Liam Gallagher is to wed fiancée Nicole Appleton in secret in the New Year, according to Liam's brother Noel.

The Oasis guitarist claims Liam and the All Saints singer - who have been together for six years and have a son, five-year-old Gene - are planning to elope after Christmas.

Noel was overheard revealing his sibling's wedding plans to a friend at a party held by radio station XFM in Manchester.

The songwriter allegedly said: "He's all set to get wed in the next few months. They are just going to slip away and do it quietly. He already calls Nicole his missus so they might as well get hitched."

Nicole - who reunited with her All Saints bandmates just a few months ago, around five years after they disbanded in 2001 - has made no secret of her desire to marry Liam.

She recently said: "We will definitely get married, it's just a matter of time."

Liam, 34, has been married once before.

In April 1997 he tied the knot with the actress Patsy Kensit. The pair divorced in September 2000 and have a seven-year-old son, Lennon, together.

When they split in the summer of 2000, a clearly drunk Liam announced the separation to around 90,000 fans at the now demolished Wembley football stadium, in London, saying: "Me missus has left me, with nothing. Not even a f***ing teabag!"

There was plenty of conjecture surrounding Noel Gallagher's acoustic gig at the Forum Theatre on Sunday night.

It had nothing to do with Gallagher's vocal performance, which was first-rate. The set-list was outstanding, too. No, fans took umbrage at the brevity of the show.

Gallagher, accompanied by Gem Archer and percussionist Terence Kirkbride, delivered a superb (and succinct) hour of sing-alongs that left a beer-soaked crowd hungry for more.

The trio, who remained seated for the entire show, leaned heavily on songs from the band's mid-1990s heyday.

Opening with the B-side It's Good to Be Free, Gallagher offered up several more rousing renditions of his remarkably strong B-side catalogue including Talk Tonight and Half the World Away.

With the theatre's air thick with cigarette smoke, the room was brimming with diehards. Every song was greeted with a formidable roar of recognition within a few seconds of its beginning.

The exuberant crowd also mustered high-spirited vocals for each track, none more raucous than the classic Don't Look Back In Anger, from the (What's the Story) Morning Glory? album.

For his part, Gallagher was in good spirits. He playfully bantered with the boisterous - and sometimes belligerent - crowd through the show, joking on the Ashes trophy, and even brother Liam's absence.

Some genuine treats included album highlights Slideaway and Cast No Shadow as well as The Importance of Being Idle and Gallagher's reclaiming of the band's worldwide hit Wonderwall.

The night's biggest curio was an ecstatically received cover of Strawberry Fields.

After a brief farewell, Noel and co were suddenly gone. As the house lights slowly came on and the crowd realised there would be no encore, there were a few errant boos.

An abrupt ending, yes, but also one of the gigs of the year

Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher has been criticised for his comments about British troops wounded in Iraq. A military commander blasted Oasis guitarist, Noel Gallagher, for saying that British troops wounded in Iraq should stop whingeing.

Black Watch (3 Scots) officer commanding, Ben Wrench, said no soldier ever volunteered to get blown up.

Pop star Gallagher sparked controversy last month when, in an interview with The Sun, he criticised troops who complained about injuries sustained in the line of duty.

But, speaking from the Black Watch base at Shaibah, near Basra in southern Iraq, Major Wrench said: "I would caution anyone about passing comment on servicemen and women who are injured in the line of duty.

"Yes, we volunteer to join the army and, of course, everyone is aware of the operational risks. But, no, we don't volunteer to be blown up by roadside bombs, to be killed or maimed and to lose limbs.

"I don't think that anybody who has an injury could be accused of whingeing. We are a free society and people can say what they like. But, if we were all getting pop star wages, maybe we would have the luxury of whingeing a lot more."

The strong remarks by the British officer signalled the latest salvo in the ongoing skirmishes between Oasis and the military.

In 2002, the band ordered British forces to withdraw a recruitment video which used songs from their best-selling album, What's The Story (Morning Glory), without permission.

Top brass were forced to make a tactical retreat and bin the promotional material, filmed on exercise in Kenya, or face legal action.

But the band were accused of hypocrisy as they had hired two Gazelle helicopters from the British military for the filming of the video to their 1997 single, D'You Know What I Mean?

NOEL Gallagher is, as usual, unapologetic.

The Oasis guitarist and songwriter yesterday reflected on a controversial time, even by his standards.

Two weeks ago, a widely reported tirade about troops in Iraq landed him in hot water with veterans' associations.

"They made it sound like I was saying British soldiers deserved to get shot at. I was talking about soldiers in general in America, and I was just, like, 'If you don't like getting shot at, don't join the army'," he said.

Gallagher was also bemused by the storm that surrounded his "tongue in cheek" response to a question about the Socceroos.

"My point was, Australians are that good at cricket and rugby, why do you bother about football? Please leave football to the rest of us."

Gallagher, in Melbourne for the release of the greatest-hits set Stop the Clocks, reflected on the band's highs and lows.

"God knows how much money I've blown," he said. "You start in a Transit van dreaming of being a rock star … then you get the big shades, the big hair, the cars, the houses and the women, and after three years you realise you have forgotten who you are."

He and guitarist Gem Archer last night played a strong greatest hits set at the Forum and will tape an episode of Vodafone Live at the Chapel in Prahran today. Gallagher plans to take in the third Ashes Test later this week.

The tour is conspicuous for the absence of Noel's brother, Liam. "He's started to carry a man bag, which is very disturbing," he said. "Apart from that, he's the usual him. I kind of give him the wide berth. Liam doesn't do acoustic shows or interviews, anyway."

WANT to know the Ten Commandments of Rock? I can't reveal them to you unless you're a rock star. Oh, all right. Here are a few:

• Thou must wear shades at all times (especially indoors).

• Thou must own at least one black leather jacket.

• Thou must have a taste for the finest wines and the hardest drugs.

These were given to me by that learned older brother in rock, Oasis guitarist-songwriter-everything-man Noel Gallagher, 39.

It's what he tells young bands when they meet him for the first time, he says.

"What, when they come up shaking, going, 'You're, like, the coolest man in the history of all the world.' I just go, (adopts super-cool, calm, God-like voice) 'I know. Stop shaking. What can I do for you?' And they go, 'Please tell us how to be better rock stars!'

"And I say, 'Well, you have to follow the 10 commandments I've set out for myself'. And they go, 'Wow, you're like a Jedi!' And I say, 'Well, yes I am.' "

Australian Oasis fans will share space with the Cool One when he performs at Brisbane's Tivoli with Oasis rhythm guitarist Gem Archer this week.

After more than a decade leading one of Britain's biggest bands, Gallagher can indeed claim Jedi status. He has weathered the storms caused by his tempestuous younger brother, Liam, as well as various musical feuds and the ups and downs of a fickle industry. Somehow, he's managed to stay down-to-earth and funny. British music mag NME dubbed him "the wisest man in rock".

He's on the phone to promote Oasis's new (whisper it) "best of". But didn't Noel say he wasn't going to release one until the band split? What's the story? Oasis are jumping ship from record label SonyBMG. Sony decided to release a "best of" and the band had the choice to be involved or not. So Noel got involved.

He chose the 18 tracks on the collection, entitled Stop the Clocks, which begins with Rock 'n' Roll Star and ends with Don't Look Back in Anger. The other members didn't get a say.

"Well, they're all my songs! I can't have (bassist) Andy Bell telling me that Rocking Chair is better than f---ing Half a World Away."
What about Liam, the band's singer?

"F--- him. He's an idiot," he says, almost to order.

Liam recently turned 34. Noel didn't get him a gift. "We don't have that kind of a relationship. I'm not even interested in how old he is. 'Cos I know deep down he's still acting like a f---ing 14-year-old."

The highlight of his career, Noel says, has been meeting his own idols, such as Paul Weller, Neil Young, Morrissey and Johnny Marr. In his 15 years in the band he's learned "nothing and everything".

"When you start off, it's all magic. To be in a band and 'in the music scene, man', it's all magic. I guess you learn cynicism as you go along. You learn a lot of things that you thought were true, they're not true at all."

So what's a day in the life of a Jedi-cum-rock star like?

"I haven't got like a fireman's pole running down through my house; I don't descend from the heavens into my kitchen in a catsuit and eat breakfast and then go maraud around London and act like a rock star. Underneath it all, we're kind of all the same. I get up in the morning. I eat breakfast. I watch the news. I smoke some cigarettes. I have some tea and the phone will start ringing in the office and they'll tell me what I've got to do today, and if I don't have to do anything, I just go and annoy my girlfriend."

I tell him that Oasis have been nominated for the British Q Magazine Award for Best Act in the World Today. He says: "Well, what can I say? We've won that award quite a few times, so the novelty has worn off."

There will be more Oasis albums. But he's in no rush. He has slowed down, but his ego is as big as ever.

"It was pretty f---ing big to start with, I've got to say. And I have mellowed a great deal and it's still huge."

Would you expect anything less from the Best Band in the World Today? You might like to know that Oasis did win the award.

It seems like there's a celebrity ghost lurking around in London and he definitely wants his presence to be known.

Liam Gallagher claims he was once visited by the ghost of his idol John Lennon.

The Oasis singer insists the late Beatle appeared to him as an apparition while he was staying at a friend's house years ago in his hometown of Manchester. Rather than be spooked by the specter, Liam was in awe of his hero.

He said, "I was in Manchester at a mate's house having a sleep. I remember getting up and feeling really weird. I turned round and there I was, lying on the bed, and I sort of fell back into my body. There was a presence there and it was him, Lennon."

Liam is not the only person convinced the ghost of Lennon has contacted them. The music legend's former band mate Paul McCartney is convinced he haunted the recording of the 1995 Beatles single "Free As A Bird" - in the form of a white peacock.

McCartney, Ringo Starr and the late George Harrison were posing for a photograph outside the studio where the track was recorded when the bird wandered in shot at the last minute.

McCartney said, "I said to the other guys, 'That's John!' Spooky, eh? It was like John was hanging around. We felt that all the way through the recording."

Lennon was shot dead in 1980 by deranged fan Mark Chapman as he entered the Dakota building in New York. He was 40 years old.

SPECIAL SET: Gem and Noel03/12/06 (5/5 Stars)

WHAT would you expect from an exclusive and intimate Oasis homecoming gig? Cosy revelations about the Gallagher brothers’ life growing up down the road in Burnage? Heartfelt tales of missing Manchester?

When Noel Gallagher and bandmate Gem Archer take the stage for their acoustic gig in front of 400 Xfm competition winners at The Lowry theatre we get nothing of the sort.

Turns out he’s not really the kiss and tell, gut-spilling, tea and sympathy type.

But, if we don’t get up close and personal with Noel himself, we do get more intimate than ever with his songs. Which, let’s face it, more than makes up for that lack of chat.

This is Oasis, after all, not Oprah. And what songs. Stripped back, toned down, and minus the trademark strut of little brother Liam, these are Oasis tunes as you have never heard them before.

How Noel perhaps wants them to be. Take blast from the past Whatever – a string-laden single from the back catalogue which teeters dangerously on the brink of schmaltz.

Transformed here into a feisty folky number, it comes alive with a bit of Noel re-mastering.

“The original way we done this was ****,” he mumbles. “But we was all on drugs.”

Yes, he’s a man of few words. But when he does use them to answer back the (frequent) hecklers, he’s quick off the mark.

Mop top

“Lend us a tenner,” comes the cry from the audience. “I only carry fifties, cock.” And not a hair on that mop top barnet ruffled.

But if the crowd are less than gushingly star struck by the presence of this modern day music icon on stage, you get the impression that’s just how he likes it.

He certainly comes without any of the airs and graces of the super famous, preferring instead to dress down in trademark jeans and polo shirt, as though he’s strolled straight off the street.

It soon becomes clear there’s little need for rock n’ roll swagger anyway.

Even without all the hype, the tough talking, and the hard-faced controversy, these are simply some of the greatest songs of the past decade.

From the anthemic Wonderwall to the recent chart comeback, The Importance of Being Idle, each one sounds great once more with just some simple guitar and Noel’s vulnerable vocals breathed up close into the mic.

Heard without the posturing of frontman Liam (who barely gets a mention all night), it simply proves what a great singer/songwriter he is in his own right.

Ostensibly, these intimate forays of Noel’s around the country are to promote the band’s 'best of' album, Stop the Clocks.

Less of an advert for the band, maybe. Definitely a good sign for any future solo career

And dedicates a song to an ex-Monkey

Noel Gallagher voiced his support for ex-Arctic Monkey Andy Nicholson during an intimate hometown gig tonight (December 4).

"I'd like to dedicate this one to our mate Andy" he told the crowd at the Lowry Theatre in Manchester before 'Talk Tonight'. "He used to be in the Arctic Monkeys, but now he isn't for reasons I just don't know."

The Oasis leader's latest stripped-down acoustic gig, organised and broadcast by XFM Manchester, was witnessed by 400 ecstatic competition winners and celebrities including Peter Kay.

Backed by bandmate Gem Archer on guitar and organ, and percussionist Terry Kirkbridge, Gallagher played a mesmerising career-spanning set, featuring early Oasis favourites 'Cast No Shadow', 'Wonderwall' and rapturously received set-closer 'Married With Children'.

The hour-long set also featured a cover of The Beatles 'Strawberry Fields Forever' and a number of Oasis B-sides including 'Half The World Away' and '(It's Good) To Be Free'.

Noel was in a buoyant, comic mood, slapping down a heckler who asked to borrow a tenner with a typical boast of: "I only carry fifties mate."

He also had a jokey dig at XFM DJ and ex- Inspiral Carpets man Clint Boon, who introduced him as "the greatest songwriter this country's ever produced."

"It's a nice thing for Clint to say - although it didn't stop him sacking me twice [as an Inspiral Carpets roadie]," he quipped. "Although it all worked out well in the end - I mean, he's working on the radio now!"

Support came from Tailgunner, the band fronted by 'Definitely Maybe' producer Mark Coyle, for whom Noel had a brief stint as a drummer.

The gig followed earlier acoustic show at London's Union Chapel (November 26).

OASIS fan Ben Hayes knows what it's like to have a rock and roll star play in his front room - after Noel Gallagher dropped by for a special gig.

Noel played three Oasis classics - Don't Look Back in Anger, Half the World Away and The Importance of Being Idle - during the acoustic set which went out live on Radio 1.

Chef Ben, from Poynton, Stockport, won a competition for a rock legend to perform from his house by clinching a tie-breaker question during the Chris Moyles breakfast show.

Ben, 22, said: "Since then the whole thing has just been totally unreal.

"I was allowed to invite my mum and dad, brother and sister over for the session, and we all spent the weekend going out buying new gear for the occasion.

"I have loved Oasis since they first started out, but never met any of the band in person.

"To have Noel playing and singing in your own front room is just absolutely incredible.

"Opening the front door and seeing him there on the doorstep is something I will never, ever forget.

"He said `Hello', shook my hand and walked in like a mate.

"When he'd done the session he seemed quite at home chatting to everybody.

"He signed all my Oasis albums, my guitar and even gave me the plectrum he'd used for the broadcast."

The Manchester-born songwriter spent more than two hours at the Hayes' home in Abbey Court before heading on his way.

He even took time out to teach Ben how to strum a few chords from the band's 1995 hit Wonderwall.

Ben and girlfriend Kate Silvers were still celebrating with a Champagne Supernova hours later.

The performance capped a week of Radio 1 Live Lounge sessions in which stars including The Kooks, the Lostprophets and the Ordinary Boys played from locations which meant something to them.

Radio 1's Jo Whiley, who broadcast her entire show from Ben's living room, said: "It was a pretty amazing show.

"Noel said it was like performing a gig in Brookside and I think he really enjoyed it.

"Ben's mum served up the most delicious croissants and cups of tea and it was a real change from the Radio 1 studio.

"The whole crew had a great time. At one stage we had about 15 people packed into the living room with the neighbours listening in at the windows."

Ben, who has been to nine Oasis concerts, won the competition after naming the band's three drummers - Tony McCarroll, Alan White and Zak Starkey.

Liam, Noel, Andy and Gem reveal their proudest moments, whether the future of the band lies with Liam or Noel’s songwriting and if the song Stop The Clocks — the title of the new compilation album — will ever surface.

YOU are set to receive the award for Outstanding Contribution To Music at the Brits in February. What has Oasis contributed to the British music scene that other bands haven’t?
SAM LAVIN, Luton

Liam: The music for a start, decent tunes and not comedy music. We brought rock ‘n’ roll vibes back.

Gem: Belief. I remember when we all heard Slide Away and Rock‘n’Roll Star and it was like a revelation. We’ve given bands like Razorlight, Arctic Monkeys and Kasabian a sense of ambition. We showed them it could be done. We came from f*** all to the biggest band in the world in five years. When I drive up to my house in Buckinghamshire I think “Wow, where did it all go right?”

WHAT is your proudest moment since joining Oasis?
GARY BOOTH, by email

Liam: Getting a record deal — someone believing in us to go and see if we were any good.

Gem: Going on tour with my son — he’s ten. And I was very proud because he held his own.

Noel: Hearing “That’s Supersonic by Oasis” on daytime Radio 1 was mindblowing at the time. We get a bit blasé about it now. Making my mam proud, I think. When we first had a single she never really understood what we were up to. My mam is colossal.

LIAM, how do you present a new song to Noel? How critical has he been?
PAUL LEAHY, Ireland

Liam: I don’t present them to him, he just sort of hears them. Even if it’s good he’ll walk out the room. He doesn’t encourage anyone, all he cares about is his f***ing self. He does his thing and I do mine — Gem’s more of an encouragement than Noel.

ANDY and Gem, how nervous were you the first time you played for Noel and Liam?
WES GERRARD, Leicester

Andy: There was definitely some nerves going on. Noel called me and said he needed a bass player but I was a guitar player so I had to learn that. But as soon as I walked through the door they were very
welcoming and chilled me out.

Gem: I got my nerves out of the way before I even put my guitar in the case. You can’t be nervous or else you price yourself out of the game. I think anticipation is the word.

EVERY Oasis fan knows the existence of the song Stop The Clocks. Noel even said it was the best track he’d ever written. When will we hear it?
MATT ROGERS, Welling

Liam: I don’t think Our Kid can get it right. I don’t think it’s the best he’s written — it’s a tune but not his best. He’s done about four versions but he’s not happy with it so it’s a bit of a nightmare.

Andy: It is an amazing tune. It has quite a heavy theme to it and we’ve had a few goes at it. We’ll get it right one day.

Noel: Every time I write a new song I say it’s the best ever! But it’s not the best thing I’ve ever written. There are about ten different versions and I can’t decide on which one. It’s a good song, the lyrics are great.

WHAT’S your favourite Oasis video?
STEVE SMITH, by email

Liam: I think all our videos are sh*t. It’s not that I don’t like doing them, just that they’re always sh*t.

Noel: The Importance of Being Idle because I’m not in it. I f***ing hate doing videos.

WHAT is the craziest night you have had with another band?
BOBBY CORRIGAN, Paisley

Liam: New York with Kasabian and Jet. It was mental. We were jumping off the bar and just acting like three-year-olds. It was a top night.

Gem: Liam’s birthday in America with Jet and Kasabian. We had a massive party. Half the people there were on acid. We were in the middle of the desert and midgets gave Liam his birthday cake and made up their own midget rap! They were stood on a table, rapping to Liam. It was one of those moments that you join a band for.

Noel: With Kasabian — every night on the American tour we kissed the sky. I’d tour with them the rest of my days. Tom Meighan is a colossal geezer. There are similarities between Tom and Liam, and me and Serge. I love that band. It reminds me of when I first met The Verve.

FOLLOWING Liam’s success as a song writer, does Noel see Oasis’s future in the hands of the younger brother?
JOE BIRCHLEY, Nottingham

Liam: I don’t think I’m a songwriter; I just do what I do. I just do my little thing with my guitar in a room I think it’s the b******s of course but if Noel thinks it’s all right to go on the record then it goes on. I’m not arsed either way because I get my kicks from singing songs. I’d never do my own records as it’s got to be Oasis.

Noel: Maybe yes. He said: “No” because he’s a lightweight but in the studio he’s always giving how good he is. But when it comes down to it he’s a sh** arse. He could carry it but he won’t because he hasn’t got the nerve.

RAZORLIGHT, Kasabian and the Arctic Monkeys all say they wouldn’t be in bands today if it hadn’t been for Oasis. How proud does it make you feel?
KEVIN QUINN, Edinburgh

Liam: It makes me proud when it comes from Kasabian but not f****** Razorlight.

Noel: It makes me proud as I love all those groups and The Coral too.

'No plans' to release 'Lord Don't Slow Me Down' track

Oasis have denied reports that they will release a new single next year.

It had been suggested that the group would release Noel Gallagher-fronted 'Lord Don't Slow Me Down', which features in the band's road movie of the same name, early next year.

However while it is understood the film is set to appear on DVD, a spokesperson for the band told NME.COM a musical release was unlikely stating: "There are currently no plans to release a new single right now."

Oasis, who are set to receive the Outstanding Contribution To Music Award at next year's BRITS in February, are currently without a record deal after their best of 'Stop The Clocks' fulfilled their contract with SonyBMG.

Meanwhile Noel Gallagher also saught to quash speculation about another of his unreleased tracks.

'Stop The Clocks' was written during the sessions for the 2005 album 'Don't Believe The Truth', but was not included on that, or the recent compilation of the same name, and the guitarist warned fans not to expect too much.

"Every time I write a new song I say it's the best ever," he told The Sun's Something For The Weekend. "But it's not the best thing I've ever written. There are about ten versions and I can't decide on one. It's a good song, the lyrics are great."

In a bizarre outburst Noel Gallagher has heaped praise on his younger brother Liam.

Usually one for putting the boot in, Noel claims that Liam is the Icon of the last decade and contemporary acts don’t compare.

Speaking to Zane Lowe on mtv, he said: "I guess if you think of the '90s, you think of Liam. I guess he’s probably the biggest icon of the 90s."

Asked whether any new bands compare to Oasis, he continued: "Kasabian have got some fucking great tunes, The Kings Of Leon have got some good tunes. The Kooks have some good tunes. Franz Ferdinand, The Libertines, Babyshambes, but I’m not sure whether there is one band (that stands out). In the 90s you had Oasis."
