L4E exclusive : Terry Kirkbride clears things up

I sent drummer Terry Kirkbride an email a few days ago asking him whether he is involved in any of the Los Angeles recording sessions with Oasis and he was nice enough to answer me today. So here is the Exclusive News regarding his engagement with the band !

    Hi Paul,
Thanks for your email and to dispell all rumours - no I'm not in LA. I worked with Oasis on demos and recordings but still not sure what they are using of mine on the final album. I'm updating my website with what I'm doing now (touring with the Ambershades ambershades.com ) and will also update once I know more about the Oasis album.

thanks a lot and stay tuned!

    cheers
    Terry

      What's the story .... Terry ?

Several fan sites have been reporting that Terry Kirkbride has joined Oasis as their new drummer. Terry's website ( hebangsthedrums.com ) is displaying a graphic showing his projects for the year 2004 which include 3 sessions with Oasis. Missing though are the current session taking place at Village Studios in Los Angeles and any official statement from the band or management. It seems safe to assume that Zak Starkey's drumming will be heard on several if not all of the tracks on the new album coming out in May .

      One Step Closer

When reading the sleeve notes on U2's newest album "How to dismantle an Atomic Bomb" you might stumble across Noel Gallagher's name in the special thanks column for the song "One Step Closer".

The credit seems to come for Noel's answer to a question of Bono's which came up during a serious conversation between the two stars. Bono: "Noel Gallagher gave me that line. We were in Birmingham on the last U.K. tour. I was telling Noel my old man had lost his faith and didn't know where he was going. And Noel just said (adopts passable Mancunian drawl), 'Well he's one step closer to knowing, isn't he?' "
The singer's father Bob Hewson died from cancer in August aged 75.

Other sources claim that Noel actually helped with writing the lyrics for the song.

Bono has revealed that Noel Gallagher is helping him write a song in memory of his dad. (Southlondon.co.uk)

"One Step Closer" ...... Enhanced by guitar and pedal-steel atmospherics, Bono sings about what lies in store at the end with the kind of openheartedness that we once took for granted from him. The idea for the lyrics came from Noel Gallagher of Oasis, who is given a special thanks on the sleeve. (Boston Globe)

Liam slapped with 50'000 Euro fine

Rock singer Liam Gallagher has to pay dearly for his fist fight in a Munich hotel bar back in December of 2002. The justice offices of Munich set the fine for this brawl with other bar guests, which left one cop injured and knocked Liam's front teeth out, at 50'000 Euro. A bodyguard of the band was also made to pay 8'000 Euro for 'exposing' himself to a female bathroom attendant....

      LA kind of guys....

Good to see LIAM GALLAGHER can still be obnoxious no matter where he is in the world. The OASIS singer flashed his V salute at snappers in Los Angeles. The band are there trying to put together the new album that they have been struggling with for months.

NOEL was spotted going into a bookshop to get his brother a pressie. Bet Liam won’t be happy when he finds Noel has coloured in the pictures and joined up the dots.

      New Oasis photo exhibition

Michael Spencer Jones who took all the photos for the new Oasis DVD and the first 3 albums and singles along with all the Verve photography is having a new exhibition in Manchester at the richard goodall gallery including brand new outtakes and unseen photos and a full 3d definitely maybe and a 12 image flip lenticular moving image, and a show exclusive poster and definitely maybe show lenticular. For more info email: oasis@richardgoodallgallery.com

    +++

HIS lens was omnipresent as the roller-coaster carriage collected Noel and Liam Gallagher from Burnage and delivered them through riotous thrills and spills to the highly-charged annals of rock 'n' roll history.

As Oasis partied, Michael Spencer Jones was there to capture the cigarettes, alcohol and excess. As Oasis mesmerised thousands of fans with blistering live performances, he photographed the testosterone-fuelled fireworks.

And as the battling Gallagher brothers enjoyed rare moments of off-stage intimacy, he was there to record their camaraderie.

So it comes as a shock on the eve of a unique retrospective featuring the most startling pictures from an archive of more than 10,000 images that the photographer who once regarded the Gallaghers as close friends says that their band has lost its ability to excite.

"After 1998, for me it all got a bit corporate to me," says Spencer Jones as he sits in the Richard Goodall Gallery, where his exhibition will take place.

"I think that was when the fun started to disappear. When a band gets so big they become too secure and the gigs at Knebworth two years earlier showed they'd got too big.

"There isn't that warmth and that closeness with the audience. I won't be going to see them at the City Of Manchester Stadium. I saw them so many times in the early to mid-90s - shows that were absolutely blowing people away."

    Work

If the name isn't familiar, then Michael Spencer Jones's work certainly will. To some extent, it was he who created the public face of Oasis through a succession of startling images which are still as exciting and thought-provoking as they were when the shutter first clicked.

He believes the rot set in at about the same time as Paul "Bonehead" Arthurs left the band, suggesting that the guitarist's part in Oasis has not been adequately recorded.

"Bonehead's departure was a real loss," Spencer Jones adds. "I always felt he was at the heart of the band. He was the one who could solve disputes. He was the one who had an integrity about him.

"The shot that would appear on the cover of Cigarettes And Alcohol took hours and hours to take. It was supposed to show this rock 'n' roll band inside a bedroom, but it just wasn't happening. There was a knock on the door and it was Bonehead. Then everything took off."

Another of Spencer Jones' most famous pictures is the one taken to appear on the cover of Definitely Maybe, the first Oasis album. Then there was the rock decadence of a Rolls-Royce sitting at the bottom of a swimming pool that provided the cover for Be Here Now.

"That was my favourite, because they actually dared to do it," Spencer Jones says, "It cost £100,000 and four days to set up."

Perhaps most enticing for fans are the pictures that haven't been widely seen - the out-takes, the intimacy and the stories behind the shots.

Which brings us to another Spencer Jones favourite - the blurred picture of two men, presumed to be Noel and Liam, which made up the cover of (What's The Story?) Morning Glory.

"On the day, we were supposed to take the picture for the cover, Noel was suffering from alcohol poisoning and couldn't make it," Spencer Jones reveals. "The art director had to stand in."

    Studied

Originally from Sheffield, Spencer Jones headed for Manchester after graduating from Bournemouth and Poole College of Art, where he had studied photography and film for three years.

Fortunately, his arrival coincided with Manchester's musical renaissance. His first commission, photographing The Stone Roses at Spike Island, was secured from the now-defunct Uptown magazine.

He then worked with the Ruthless Rap Assassins (the band featuring Black Grape's Kermit) before moving on to Wigan outfit, The Verve.

"A lot of it is word of mouth," he says. "Moving in those circles, you get to meet people." He got the Oasis gig because Noel Gallagher had seen the work he'd done for The Verve.

Softly spoken and unassuming, with a slight look of a young Woody Allen, he chooses not to answer when I ask him whether he, too, lived the sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll life style, although it is clear that he was there before they went corporate.

"Once, when I was touring with them, there was a night when I found myself partying in the same room as the band at 2am. I can remember thinking, `There's absolutely nowhere I'd rather be at this time'.

"They are the greatest people who I have ever worked with. Noel is possibly the greatest songwriter ever to come out of Manchester, while Liam is one of the best singers ever to come out of Manchester. People overlook those points because of that laddish and stereotypical Loaded image which they attained.

"The truth is that as individuals they are great people to be around. They have a fantastic sense of humour. That Loaded thing was only a small part of what they were about."

Sunshine Follows Thunder: Oasis '94 to '04 can be seen at the Richard Goodall Gallery, 59 Thomas Street, Northern Quarter, Manchester, between November 12 and December 10.

Oasis back on top - 250 000 tix sold

Oasis have been regained their crown as the pre-eminent rock band in Britain after they sold an estimated 250,000 tickets this morning for live shows next summer.

The band have now added a third date at the City Of Manchester Stadium after shows on July 2 and 3 sold out by 11.30am. They will now also play their hometown on June 30.

A spokesperson for the band reported these shows to be amongst the fastest selling ever in the band’s history. "It’s been an incredible morning," she said. "Oasis currency remains sky-high.

The band have also sold out two shows at Milton Keynes Bowl (July 9, 10) and Glasgow’s Hampden Park (June 29). Massive queues have been reported in Glasgow where fans had an opportunity to pick up tickets the old fashioned way rather than online or by phone.

It is unclear if further dates will be added.

OASIS have scored a concert hat-trick at the home of their heroes Manchester City after phenomenal demand from fans for tickets.

The rock giants have announced a third home-town concert date at the City of Manchester Stadium after shows on July 2 and 3 next year sold out within two and a half hours on Saturday. They will now also play at the stadium on June 30.

Fans queued at ticket outlets across Britain and jammed telephone hotlines and internet sites to get tickets.

Eight years ago the band played two home-coming shows at the club's Maine Road ground.

The band also sold out shows next summer at Glasgow's Hampden Park and Milton Keynes Bowl - meaning a quarter of a million tickets were sold in just 150 minutes. A second date at Milton Keynes has also been added.

Such huge demand for tickets has confirmed the enduring popularity of the band fronted by Burnage-born Liam and Noel Gallagher.

The band have not released any new material in more than two years and their last Manchester shows were back in the summer of 2002 at Old Trafford cricket ground.

Oasis intend to release a new album and a series of singles next year. The concerts will include a number of star guests.

Oasis play City Of Manchester Stadium on June 30, July 2 and July 3. Tickets cost £32.50 plus booking fee.

Tickets for all performances go on sale tomorrow at 9am priced £32.50 plus booking fee. There is a maximum of six tickets per person. Tickets cab be booked on 0870 1432205.

The band, which famously sold out two 19,000-capacity concerts at Earls Court in minutes, won three awards in 1996 and then played two homecoming gigs at Manchester City's previous ground, Maine Road.

In 2002 more than 100,000 fans converged on Lancashire County Cricket Club's Old Trafford ground for two concerts.

Throughout their careers, the volatile brothers have courted controversy and rarely been out of the celebrity gossip pages.

    3rd show added in Manchester

Due to phenomenal demand for Oasis tickets in the Manchester area, the band have decided to add a third and final show at Manchester, City Of Manchester Stadium on Thursday 30 June 2005.

These are the fastest ever selling shows for Britain's favourite rock and roll band and are set to be even more amazing than their legendary Maine Road Stadium shows of 1996.

Each night will feature a host of special guests and is proving to be the hottest ticket yet for 2005

Xfm Online can exclusively reveal that Oasis have announced a huge UK headlining live date at the Milton Keynes Bowl in July 2005. And we have all the details right here…

As previously reported, Oasis are currently in Los Angles recording the follow up to their 2002 album ‘Heathen Chemistry’, a record that may see them working with former Beatles drummer Ringo Starr (see ‘Oasis To Play With The Beatles’).

Now Xfm can reveal the band will be playing the open air 60,000 capacity Milton Keynes Bowl on Saturday July 9 next year.

Tickets will be going on sale at 9.00am this Saturday (November 6) and will be available from the Xfm Xchange on 0871 222 1049.

Or return to this webpage at 9.00am on Saturday November 6 where there’ll be a live link to buy tickets from the Xfm Online Ticket Shop. Fans are recommended to book early to avoid disappointment as the gig is expected to sell out very, very quickly.

While there's still no set release date for Oasis new album, the record is expected to include new songs 'A Bell Will Ring' and 'The Meaning Of Soul' which the band debuted at Glastonbury in June.
