IT was another day of morning glory for Oasis yesterday as the 8,500 tickets for their first Irish gig at the Point Theatre, Dublin on March 5 sold out in minutes.

And all remaining tickets for the second gig on March 6 are expected to be sold over the weekend, according to concert promoters MCD.

"Oasis are one of the most popular bands in the world and Ireland is one of their biggest territories. That's reflected in the ticket sales," spokesperson Justin Green said.

This will be Oasis's fourth appearance in Ireland in less than a year. Last June, the British band fronted by Noel and Liam Gallagher played to 18,000 people in Belfast and to 20,000 three months later in Derry.

They headlined the Witness music festival in Leopardstown last summer for a further 40,000 fans.

The Manchester band's popularity peaked at the height of the 'Britpop' in 1996, with sales of 18 million albums, and two million fans chasing tickets for two gigs in Knebworth, England.

There have been many bust ups, walkouts and broken teeth but the band have managed to stick together.

"At 35, now, to leave Oasis would be like getting a new girlfriend it's like I couldn't be arsed, dating. Another band rehearsals would be like going out for dinner, getting to know people. I can't be bothered to do that," said Noel Gallagher told the Daily Telegraph yesterday.

Oasis' latest album, Heathen Chemistry, has sold three million copies. Irish fans who bought Oasis tickets yesterday did not have to spend hours queuing outside record shops.

Most of the tickets were sold either over the phone or online, according to MCD.

Death In Vegas have been forced to abandon plans for a concert featuring collaborations from their past two albums.

According to reports, the duo were unable to find a date that matched the schedules of album guests including Liam Gallagher, Bobby Gillespie, Paul Weller and Iggy Pop.



The band's Gallagher track, 'Scorpio Rising', was a hit for the band in December 2002 and, at one point, was even tipped for the festive number one spot.

Meanwhile, Death In Vegas will play a late night gig at London's Brixton Academy on May 2. The event runs from 9pm - 2am and will feature special guests. Tickets are priced at £16.

A full UK tour is due to be announced in the coming weeks, with a new single release scheduled to coincide with the band's Brixton show

Oasis have confirmed a second Irish date after the tickets for the first concert sold out in 20 minutes.

The Manchester band will now play the Point Theatre in Dublin on Thursday 6 of March as well as Wednesday 5 March.

Tickets for the second concert went on sale at 10am this morning and are available from Ticketmaster outlets nationwide.

Wrap up well



In this ever-changing world, in which celebrities pass by and disappear at a rate of knots, few Way of the World readers will realise that the pop group Oasis are still going. In fact, like Sir Cliff Richard, Smith's Crisps, Thomas the Tank Engine and Andrews Liver Salts, they are alive and kicking.

Oasis became famous in the mid-Nineties for wearing outdoor clothing - windcheaters with woolly collars, Barbours and suchlike - at all times, even in hot television studios. The world applauded such heroic endurance, recognising the group's mainstays, Liam and Noel Gallagher, as the natural heirs to Scott of the Antarctic. Furthermore, their influence extended far and wide. For generations, dutiful parents had been met with resentful looks when urging their children to put on something warm. Suddenly, thanks to the Gallagher brothers, an entire generation of adolescents wrapped up well.

Photographed by The Telegraph in thick snow wearing a sensible scarf, Noel Gallagher is at least making the effort to maintain the old traditions. But I sometimes feel he lets himself down when he opens his mouth. Asked by the interviewer David Jenkins whether he wished he'd been part of the Sixties generation, this was his reply: "Oh, man. Jammy c---s man. I've said it to them: You were so f---ing lucky you were the first because if Oasis performed in 1962, and I wrote Live Forever in 1967, I'd be bigger than all of you. When you meet your maker, Mr McCartney and Mr Jagger and Mr Richards, ask Him, why were you selected and not me? Because I'm as good as they are. Because if I'd have been there, I'd have been as big as they were. I would have."

I wonder if, strictly speaking, this is true? Mr Gallagher specialises in adept pastiches of the songs of yesteryear. Those that do not sound uncannily like the Beatles sound spookily like the Rolling Stones. But he is wrong to conclude from this that he would have rivalled them had he been around in their day. On the available evidence, in 1967, he would have been producing polished variations of Mambo Italiano by Rosemary Clooney or She Wears Red Feathers and a Hula-Hula Skirt by Guy Mitchell. I wonder if the Lord Almighty will have the nerve to point this out to him, when his moment comes?

Last night (January 27), dotmusic was treated to a preview screening of the new Britpop film Live Forever and we can happily report that the insights of the Gallagher brothers are just as hilarious as expected.

Live Forever charts the rise and demise of nineties music focusing on the Britpop movement of bands including Oasis, Blur, Pulp, Massive Attack and many more.

The film's strength lies in its ability to confront the stars of the day and probe them about their actions raking up some pleasant and not so pleasant memories. The majority of the genre's main protagonists make an appearance - Pulp's Jarvis Cocker, the Gallagher brothers, Sleeper's Louise Wener, Massive Attack's Del Naja, and Blur's Damon Albarn - as well as representatives from the world of fashion, art and journalism.

The star of the show is without question Noel Gallagher whose frank anecdotes and witty comments on the time had the audience laughing throughout. Among his personal highlights (and the film was littered with them) were his thoughts on his visit to Downing Street and the Blur/Oasis chart battle.

On the other hand, Blur's only representative Damon Albarn (Oasis' arch enemy at the time in the eyes of the media) came across as defensive, struggling to articulate his opinions.

Liam was on hand to provide some typically amusing and uncomplicated observations (he looks after his hair, he didn't realise the band were playing two nights at Knebworth etc) and Jarvis Cocker spoke about the celebrity life he was suddenly thrust into which led to, what he described, as the worse period of his life.

Despite obvious omissions and the awkward fit of a political and social framework which sometimes overshadows the music, the film is a fascinating insight into Cool Britannia.

Live Forever opens on February 14 in London and regionally on February 28.

An Oasis of calm



For Noel Gallagher, 'being me is the best gig in the world'. The mellow and entertaining rock star talks to David Jenkins about teeth, his brother and being bigger than God


He's a very affable fellow, Noel Gallagher. Foul-mouthed, yes, and cod-aggressive, but meticulously punctual, polite and funny, with an accent and a comic delivery that can be unsettlingly like Eric Morecambe's.

And like Eric Morecambe, the 35-year-old Manchester-born guitarist and main songwriter for Oasis is, as a red button on his Stone Island jacket declares, a 'Northern Wizard' - one who likes to make mock of the record industry ('It's them dressing up Christina Aguilera so she looks like some fuckin' tart from fuckin' Newcastle, know what I mean?'); of Kylie Minogue ('I don't understand why people buy her fuckin' records. Because they're shit. I mean, it doesn't say a lot when it's your three-year-old's favourite record'); and of his brother Liam's famous charisma. (Though Liam stands, unmoving, in front of the microphone, his neck dipped, and his hands clasped behind him like the Duke of Edinburgh, he exudes all the scorn, sexuality and arrogance you could ask for in a rock 'n' roll frontman.)

'Aaagh,' says Noel, as he considers the Liam question. 'Aaagh. If I wasn't related to him, I suppose I'd have a more objective view. But - and I mean this in the nicest possible way - because he's my brother, right, I watch him stood on stage just staring blankly at 50,000 people, and I watch them all stood there with their mouths open, gawpin' at him, and I'm thinking: "Arrogance? He's stood there with the fucking cheeks of his arse clenched so tight because he's fucking petrified. And he's just staring blankly 'cos he hasn't got anything to say - not because he's doing this act. And I think: "You fucking wanker." [Henceforth, for the most part, imagine the expletives.] But that's only because I know him so well. If he was some guy I'd never met and he auditioned for the band, I'd probably think, "God, he's a genius."'

In fact, when in August 1991 Noel - then a roadie - first watched his five-years-younger brother perform at the Boardwalk, a tiny club in Manchester, he thought Liam had 'a great voice - and a great hairdo'. He also thought Liam's band - already called Oasis - was dreadful, and offered them a way forward: they should do it his way, with his songs, and they'd become the biggest band in the world. It was, he's said, a simple process: 'Here's what you do: you pick up your guitar, you rip a few people's songs off, get your brother in the band, punch his head in every now and then, and it sells.' Particularly when, in the laddish climate of the mid-1990s, the songs are about 'shagging, taking drugs and being in a band'. Definitely Maybe (1994) and (What's the Story) Morning Glory? (1995) sold by the container-load. In 1996 they sold 18 million albums, and when that year the band played two gigs at Knebworth, two million people applied for tickets.

There have, notoriously, been numerous Oasis implosions since, and Noel has walked out while on tour more than once. 'Yes, well, technically we've broken up quite a lot, but it's never felt like that. Because the band's too important to me - it's what I do. At 35, now, to leave Oasis would be like getting a new girlfriend - it's like I couldn't be arsed, dating. Another band - rehearsals would be like going out for dinner, getting to know people. I can't be bothered to do that. Because the best gig in the world is being me, in Oasis. Because you get to do backing vocals and you get to give a bit of lip between the songs [in Brighton, for instance, in December, wishing that some of the audience die of hypothermia], and I get to sing the two biggest songs of the night, 'Don't Look Back in Anger' and 'Wonderwall'. So I think I'll stick with what I know, thank you very much.'

Oasis are, indeed, still colossal. Their latest album, Heathen Chemistry, has sold three million copies worldwide; the band played to 490,000 people in Britain last year; and they have so far milked one Number One and two Twos from the album's 11 tracks. Now a new single is being released and it is, for the first time, a song written by Liam - 'Songbird', a simple, affecting, nursery-rhyme-like love song. It is, you sense, from the heart - a part of the body Noel doesn't, in his song-writing, much visit these days. 'I don't', he says, a little shiftily, 'like to write achingly personal songs.'

He's sitting in a deep leather armchair, his right hand beating sporadically on his knee. In repose his eyes, under their thick, thick brows, look hooded and fierce, but his laugh lines are etched deep, and he grins readily. His jeans are artfully frayed at the ankle, and when he undoes his Mao-collared jacket, there's a black T-shirt below. He's small - 5ft 8in - but, 'Jesus was 5ft 6in, apparently, so I'm bigger than God.' He has a shaving rash on his neck and a few flecks of grey in his fringe - a tiny testimony to the ecstasy and the agonies of the last few years.

But it's his songs that exercise him most. His first album, he says, 'was all about trying to get out of Manchester. It was about escapism, and I think all music should be that. And they were good songs - like "Live Forever", "Slide Away", "Rock 'n' Roll Star". And at that point I was really livin' it - you know, we were in the back of a transit van, goin' up and down motorways, and we were being a proper, working band. And I think that's probably why people hold that album up as the one - and probably why I do - because I meant every word I was writing. I did want to live forever, and I did want to be a rock 'n' roll star. All those lyrics are fantastic because they're honest. Whereas now it's like private jets, good hotels, nice restaurants, da da da. You become more insulated so you make stuff up, and it becomes more abstract. Less personal.'

But why avoid the personal? Is it because he hasn't dealt with the unresolved business of his life? His unwillingness to make peace with his father ('I don't give a fuck if he never gets to see his grandkids')? Has he ever been in therapy?

'I've never... I... I don't think I need to.' He trails off, starts again. 'I do feel I could probably be less obsessed with music and more... I have a difficulty expressing emotions. Liam's different. His emotions just - wow! - come out. That's why he gets into fights. That's him. We all deal with our backgrounds in different ways, I suppose. But I've never been told by anyone I respect, "You should go and see somebody." I've never felt the need - maybe I'm scared.' He laughs, the living image of jokey denial. 'Maybe I'd come out and I'd be slicing some bread and I'd start crying because, "It's just so fantastic, man!"'

And does he find emotions with women difficult?

There's a very long silence. Gallagher sits back, folds his hands behind his head. 'Yeah... Well, I find it very difficult to let people get close to me. All my relationships, whether they be with girlfriends, wives, brothers, people-who-I'm-in- a-band-with, managers, they're on a very superficial level. I very rarely sit down and go, "I tell you what: I'm feeling a bit down at the minute." Whereas other people...well, I dread going out with friends to the pub and I go, "'Ow are you?" and they go, "Well, now you ask..." I'm very mistrustful of people anyway. I think people are wankers.'

All of them?

'Most of them, yeah. I've got a couple of friends in Manchester - everybody else, I'd like to keep at arm's length. And, if I ever got to power, I'd outlaw people living together. Immediately. Get married, have kids and all that, but at some point go home and spend a significant amount of time on your own.'

Well, I say, Orson Welles once said that 'to live together, you need a very large house'.

'That's true. I've been living on my own for I don't know how many months now, and it's quite a luxurious existence. You can do whatever you want, whenever you want. Like I went to this exhibition the other night, then I went to the pub with my mate Gem, who's in the band, and then I got back to our house and I got assholed. And I got up the next morning and there was just CDs all over the floor, the ashtrays was full of cigarettes, there was beer cans everywhere, and I'm stood thinking, "Blimey, did I have a party here last night?" And then I thought, "No, it was just me. On my own:fucking well done, mate." Gave myself a little round of applause.'

Famously, Noel used to live with Meg Mathews, at Supernova Heights in north London, and the pair of them gave parties that lasted days and days: supermodels lolling against the fridge, white lines everywhere, and endless gabbing about crop circles and conspiracy theories. It was, Gallagher says, inevitable he be addicted to cocaine - he's an addictive personality. After coke, it was guitars; after guitars, sunglasses; now it's his recording studio, which he plans to move from his London house to his country house, near Chalfont St Giles, Buckinghamshire. Heroin never appealed to him ('You look like a twat, basically: dirty and smelly and skinny as fuck'), but cocaine helped conquer his shyness and helped him be 'less of a pussy' in keeping up with his hard-drinking actor friends. None of which he regrets.

The downside was that 'cocaine is the most uncreative drug in the world. Because you're so obsessed by the sound of your own voice. The only thing to do on coke is make a spoken-word record. It'd be great: you'd just rant for hours. That's what Liam and I should have done: a Derek and Clive record, coked up in Abbey Road, just arguing for months.'

Instead he frolicked, put on a stone-and-a-half and put out the bloated, grandiose, derided Be Here Now (1997). Meanwhile Meg, whom Gallagher had married in Las Vegas in 1997, became famous for shopping - and Noel and his swain became a paparazzied fixture in OK!, Hello! and the tabloids. This still rankles: 'The reason I hate being in gossip columns is because someone who lives in Middlesbrough who's never met you thinks you're a "celebrity" - whereas I'm a musician. I'm not fuckin' Darren Day, I'm not Ant and Dec. It's quite an important thing I do, a pure thing, and then you get like the Daily Mirror's asking today, "Is Noel Gallagher giving up smoking?" When we're getting ready to go to war? Fuckin' hell, man, will you just get a grip of yourselves?'

Gallagher didn't get a grip of his cocaine habit until 5 June 1998. That day he gave up and changed his life. He sold Supernova Heights and moved, with Meg, to the country. Noel heaps ridicule on his previous way of life - 'Nightclubs, they're rubbish. Bars, they're awful' - but Meg seemed less keen to shrug off the stars-'n'-shopping syndrome. In February 2000 they had a daughter, Anaïs. In September 2000 they separated. In 2002 they divorced, and 'unfortunately' Noel was 'quite public' with coruscating remarks about his ex. Recently Meg, appearing naked in a women's magazine, a shaft of metal through her nipple, has spoken warmly of her time with Noel, and Noel for his part says, after a multitude of pauses, 'We get on - not massively, you know, but we get on. We realise there's a child involved, and she loves the pair of us.'

And does he have a girlfriend now? (A liaison with Sara MacDonald, a blonde PR woman, came to grief last August.)

'I have got a girlfriend at the moment.' Will he say who? 'Nope. Nope. It's one of those things... It's just when it's in the papers for other people to see, it demeans it. She's fantastic, she's gorgeous, she's the funniest person I know, but it's not for public consumption. She's mine, she belongs to me.'

The trouble, though, is that Oasis belong to their fans. And not just Oasis the band and their music: they're bona fide working-class heroes, and the effrontery and the sheer couldn't-give-a-tossness they ooze is part of the allure. Noel may rue the fact that that very scorn has to some degree alienated the United States - 'We got saddled with this reputation: "Oh, they're just assholes, they don't turn up for gigs"' - but that is in itself part of the aura that surrounds the band, and Liam. As Noel has remarked, for everyone who purses their lips at Liam's loutishness, there's a lad on a Glasgow housing estate, clutching his Bensons and his Tennent's Special and urging, 'Go for it, son, go for it.' Noel now eschews 'the lifestyle. That's personal choice, to go out, drink a bottle of Jack Daniel's and do loads of coke, speed and acid. I have a guitar by my side 24 hours a day. I live the life of a songwriter and a musician. When you wake up at five in the afternoon, slumped against the wall of someone else's hotel room - that ain't cool.' But that's the 'lifestyle' associated with Oasis, and their touring shenanigans reflect it. For instance, has Noel forgiven his brother for getting his teeth knocked out in a brawl in a Munich hotel last November?

'I don't need to say anything. He has very, very infamously had his teeth kicked out, right? I wasn't there, I don't know what happened. All I'll say is: if you're gonna pick a fight, make sure you're going to win. And, you know, it's very, very humiliating to be famously beat up. Maybe it'll teach him a lesson.'

Poor Noel. There he is, joined at the hip in sibling rivalry-cum-dependence-cum-love, struggling with demons he'd rather not confront, and unable to write words to the 20-odd melodies and arrangements he's got ready. He can't write because he won't write for himself - he wants to write for Oasis, and Oasis, for him, means writing for Liam. He wants to write as he did when he was young and 'desperate' and the only way out of Manchester was rock 'n' roll stardom. But he's got that now, and a daughter he adores, and a house in the country, and he is, in truth, in early middle-age. As a good rocker should, he rails at the 'circus monkeys' of manufactured pop and at the 'shark's-fin haircuts' they're made to sport; less predictably, he says he is a 'good person'. He's embarrassed to say it, but he does, and he'll shuffle in his seat and smile shyly and declare, 'Well, I believe that what you give is what you get. And I've never raped anybody, I've never mugged anybody, I'm never aggressive to people in the street. I never go on stage pissed and I'm polite to my mother - so, yeah, if there's a queue getting into heaven, I'll be in the "In" queue, I think.'

And heaven, perhaps, is a place where he might have one last argument, with the deity. Gallagher famously adores the Beatles, the Kinks, the Stones; he collects 1960s memorabilia and 1960s guitars. Does he wish he'd come of age in the 1960s?

'Oh, man,' he says, his eyes gleaming. 'Jammy cunts, man. I've said it to them: You were so fucking lucky you were the first, because if Oasis performed in 1962, and I wrote "Live Forever" in 1967, I'd be bigger than all of you. When you meet your maker, Mr McCartney and Mr Jagger and Mr Richards, ask Him, why were you selected and not me? Because I'm as good as they are. Because if I'd have been there, I'd have been as big as they were. I would have.'

Gallagher says Oasis will soldier on



Oasis will not be splitting up despite the Gallagher brothers' tempestuous rock'n'roll bust ups.

The band's driving force, songwriter Noel Gallagher, says the group is now personally too important to him - and he can't be bothered finding or forming a new one.

Gallagher says of the band's regular fall-outs, "Yes, well, technically we've broken up quite a lot, but it's never felt like that.

"Because the band's too important to me - it's what I do," he told The Sunday Telegraph.

"At 35, now, to leave Oasis would be like getting a new girlfriend - it's like I couldn't be arsed, dating.

"Because the best gig in the world is being me, in Oasis... and I get to sing the two biggest songs of the night, Don't Look Back In Anger and Wonderwall."

Gallagher also revealed he now craves to be taken seriously as a musician, despite his band's off-stage antics regularly appearing in the tabloids.

"The reason I hate being in gossip columns is because someone who lives in Middlesbrough who's never met you thinks you're a 'celebrity' - whereas I'm a musician.

He added, "I'm not f------ Darren Day, I'm not Ant and Dec. It's quite an important thing I do."

Liam Gallagher's songwriting career could be over already despite the imminent release of the first Liam-penned single.

Speaking in an interview on the DVD version of their new single, 'Songbird' (out Feb 3), the Oasis star reveals that his number one priority is fronting the band and songwriting is not his main concern.

As promised, above you can see Noel and Liam in discussion about their live shows last summer and their new single.

On the Finsburys Park gigs:

Liam: "I loved it"

Noel: "That'll define our year. Yeah, it was really good but it should have been more nerve-racking than it was. They were really important gigs but we didn't realise it until the Monday morning after. We don't like to piss about. We like to do the big gigs cos it defines us as a band."

Noel on the atmosphere of the shows:

"You can do flashy videos and do amazing marketing campaigns so that you can almost entice people to buy your records but you can't fake it to a crowd. The people that come to our gigs are as real as it gets and they would see through us in a minute if we started to disappear up our own arses."



Liam on Songbird:

"It was in France when we were doing 'Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants' and I went for a walk. I sat under a tree for a couple of hours playing this tune and it was 'Songbird'. Then I thought of some words and that was it, pretty easy. Wrote in about ten minutes."

Liam on his songwriting future:

"I'm not bothered if I never write another song cos I'm quite happy singing them and that's my first job, being a singer, instead of being caught up writing songs.

ANOTHER CRACK AT THE 'WALL



OASIS have re-recorded their most famous single 'Wonderwall', NME can exclusively reveal.

The group originally released the Britpop anthem in October 1995 when it entered the UK chart at Number Two, and it is now acknowledged as a landmark record for a generation and the most famous Oasis song ever.

Noel Gallagher re-entered a studio over the festive period to re-record the track and sources close to the band have told NME that the new version is "completely different" to its studio predecessor, with Noel singing instead of Liam. The new version is believed to have been inspired by Ryan Adams, who covered the song recently in his live set.

Noel recently commented: "I never got my head round this song until I went to see Ryan Adams play and he did an amazing cover of it. So now I'm going to cover one of my own songs in the style of Ryan Adams."

An Oasis insider told NME: "Since he saw Ryan Adams playing his song in a completely different way, it's rejuvenated his interest in it. It's given Noel a way to make it his own again."

Since his comments, Noel has been playing an acoustic version of the song live - although that proved controversial. On last December's UK tour, he kept aborting it halfway through, insisting fans at the arena gigs didn't sing along. When they did, he stopped, prompting jeers at some shows, and a plethora of letters of complaint to NME.

Given the lyrical content, most assumed 'Wonderwall' was a love song, penned in tribute to his then girlfriend Meg Mathews, and that was why he became disillusioned with it.

After the couple split in 2000, Oasis rarely performed it live, but only recently did Noel claim the "meaning of that song was taken away" from him by the media, and it was never about Meg at all.

He told the BBC: "How do you tell your missus it's not about her once she's read it is? It's a song about an imaginary friend who's gonna come and save you from yourself."

It is currently unclear where or when the song will emerge. However, it will not be on their new single 'Songbird', which is comes out on February 3. 'Songbird' will feature a new Noel song '(You’ve Got) The Heart Of A Star' and 'Columbia', recorded live at the Glasgow Barrowlands in October 2001.

OASIS have been forced to fork out £25,000 in damages after their minders roughed up a fan before a gig.

I told you in September how PAUL ASHBEE, a former pal of the band, claimed he received “severe bruising” to his back and legs after being escorted from an executive box at the Lancashire County Cricket Club.

Ashbee, who went to the Manchester Royal Infirmary for treatment following the incident, called in cops who launched an investigation into the incident.

But now the band and Ashbee have settled out of court after agreeing a compensation sum of £25,000.
A source close to Oasis said: “Ashbee wasn’t going to let this one go without a fight.

“He says he was badly roughed up and could have got NOEL GALLAGHER into a lot of trouble. He says Noel was the one who told the minders to get him out of the box.

After all the trouble in recent months, Oasis and their advisers decided a high-profile court case could be damaging to them.

“Through their solicitors, a deal was struck and a figure of £25,000 was decided on.

“It’s a lot of money but it could have been worse if things had gone to court.”

Manchester City soccer stars NICOLAS ANELKA, SHAUN GOATER and KEVIN HORLOCK looked on in horror in September as Mr Ashbee was bundled out of the executive box.

They were all there to watch the Oasis “Homecoming” gig at the Lancashire County Cricket ground in Manchester when Noel spotted Ashbee and ordered him to be removed.

The band and Ashbee fell out four years ago after he tried to sue them for not crediting him as the man who brought them together.

Frontman LIAM GALLAGHER used to work for Ashbee’s Formula One car cleaning firm — and was introduced by him to guitarist BONEHEAD.



Gory ... morning story

Liam joined Bonehead’s band The Rain and after brother Noel joined in 1993, they became Oasis.

Liam is due to return to Germany later this month to answer questions about his bar brawl in Munich.

The singer lost two front teeth after being smashed in the face when he, drummer ALAN WHITE and some crew members were in a vicious bust-up.

Noel was not involved in the fracas, which caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to the Bayerischer Hof Hotel bar last month.

It's going to be a Friday of big names on television that February 7, for over on BBC1 PK will be greeting Noel Gallagher of Oasis on Patrick Kielty Almost Live.
While he's in town, Noel will be calling in at the Limelight in Ormeau Avenue, where Oasis were playing the Sunday night six years ago when their debut album Definitely Maybe soared to number one in the UK charts, establishing them as a top-rank rock band.

They may only be at the nominations phase, but the Brit Awards 2003 have already thrown up a couple of early surprises.

The first is that Robbie Williams, winner of 13 statues in his decade-long pop career, has only been nominated for one award this year despite the commercial success of his latest album, Escapology.

The second is that Gareth Gates, runner-up in the cheese-pop extravaganza that was Pop Idol, has two entries nominated for Best Single - Unchained Melody (a poor cover version) and Anyone of Us /Stupid Mistake (a mistake to ever have been released).

Gates is not a pop idol, he is a glorified karaoke singer with a rapidly inflating ego. Surely questions have to be asked of the credibility of awards which deem he has produced two of the best singles of the year, but do not even earn him a nomination as best male solo artist.

The answer lies in the fact that the best singles are determined by the five best selling records of the year which automatically make up the nominations for this category. The fact is, the singles market continues to be depressed, with only the teeny bopper market, of which Gates is a pin-up hero, buying 45s in great numbers and with any regularity.

A trend confirmed by the fact that his rivals for glory on the night are Atomic Kitten with The Tide Is High (Get The Feeling), Liberty X's Just A Little and Gates's Pop Idol pal and major rival Will Young's Evergreen.

For the sake of North-East regional pride, let us hope Gateshead girl Michelle Heaton and her Liberty X clan complete their transformation from Flopstars - they were runners up in the Popstars show which spawned the now defunct Hear'Say - by scooping the coveted (or not so) prize.

Whereas Gates is not included in the best male category, Williams, naturally, is. Nevertheless, when you consider he is the most successful ever individual artist at these awards, the fact this is his only nomination is a touch surprising.

Perhaps it is just the notoriously back-stabbing industry's way of responding to his £80m record deal with EMI, or perhaps it is because Williams' star had previously risen far beyond what his talent merits?

The Brits have been struggling to regain the credibility they had in the mid-nineties during the Oasis-Blur Brit Pop era, with Craig David's snub in 2001 seen as a return to the bad old days of the awards failing to recognise true talent in favour of middle of the road tosh.

Ironically it was Williams who benefited most when David failed to win a single category despite being nominated in seven. It was an oversight which prompted a public outcry from the likes of U2's Bono and Elton John among others.

But at least this year the list for Best Album is looking good with Coldplay - Rush of Blood to the Head; Ms Dynamite - A Little Deeper; The Coral - The Coral; The Streets - Original Pirate Material and Sugababes - Angels with Dirty Faces all critically acclaimed.

Indeed, The Streets, Ms Dynamite and Coldplay look like being the major winners in 2003 with the former duo nominated in four categories each and Coldplay in the important ones of Best Album and Best Group.

Whether the awards themselves cause quite the same stir as the party shenanigans remains to be seen.

The awards take place on February 20 at Earl's Court. They will be televised by ITV later that night.

With the threat of another war in the Gulf looming ever larger, and at a time when musical protest is sorely needed, Rob Jenkins finds that the rock community is keeping strangely quiet.

Yet bands have been very reticent even to commit to an anti-war stance at all (not even Radiohead or U2 have joined the Anti-War Coalition). The only prominent campaigners in the UK are Massive Attack and Damon Albarn. Both parties have albums out later this year, and both are capable of taking a stand, though neither is well known as a purveyor of anthems.

Anthems are unfashionable at the moment, and we are in danger of forgetting their true value in uniting crowds and galvanising movements. Oasis, still one of the best-placed bands to capitalise on this, have always expressed a distaste for politics in music. Noel Gallagher: "my opinion means nothing. The people in the White House can change this. I play guitar in a band and we're really good. I’m not arsed about anything else." This, lest it be forgotten, is the man who also said that taking drugs was just as mundane drinking a cup of tea. He has obviously forgotten the press furore that ensued as a consequence and so doesn't appreciate the profile and impact an anti-war song by Oasis might make.

Not that the Gallagher brothers have any political credibility. This is the true problem. There does not exist today a figure with both the profile and the political nous (and bravery) to write a mainstream protest song. So last year's demonstration in Glasgow – against the war and also in favour of justice for Palestine, ended not with any resonant, contemporary anthem, but with two well-worn songs.

Oasis have never been renowned for willingly breaking with tradition. Despite being the biggest band of the Nineties, the Mancunians have long been mocked for their failure to move their sound on from the retro, Beatles-influenced grooves first showcased on their debut album Definitely Maybe almost a decade ago.

However, the release of the new Oasis single will see the band finally smash one long-standing rule. Songbird will be the first ever Oasis single not written by guitarist and chief creative force Noel Gallagher. Taken from the group’s fifth album Heathen Chemistry, the track is actually the work of Liam Gallagher.

Songbird is not Liam’s first venture into songwriting. The band’s much-maligned fourth album Standing On The Shoulders Of Giants featured the Liam-penned track Little James, an embarrassing ode to his stepson complete with lyrics about trampolines and toys. Heathen Chemistry, however, marked an improvement in the younger Gallagher’s composition skills, containing three Liam numbers, including Songbird.

Oasis will be hoping for a high chart position for the single, to offset the bad publicity of late. Liam Gallagher lost a fight – and two of his front teeth - during a brawl in a Munich bar in December, and had to under go emergency dental surgery to save his smile.

Songbird is released on February 3rd, with new track You’ve Got The Heart Of A Star and a live version of Oasis classic Columbia making up the numbers on the flipside.

Oasis, Heathen Chemistry (Epic): The fifth studio album, Heathen Chemistry, by "the biggest band in the world," Oasis, didn't do much of anything. Sure it sold well (more than most bands will ever sell), but it just wasn't "great." Touted as a return to the "old" Oasis (Definitely Maybe era), Heathen Chemistry did little more than prove that the good old days are gone for Oasis, at least for now. (M.R.)

Oasis have confirmed to NME.COM final details of their new single ‘SONGBIRD’.
Released on February 3, the first Oasis single penned by Liam Gallagher features a new Noel song '(You’ve Got) The Heart Of A Star' and 'Columbia', recorded live at the Glasgow Barrowlands in October 2001.


A DVD single will also be released, which features the video for the single and a demo of the song.

THE parents of Noel Gallagher's Scottish girlfriend say they have no idea if she is set to marry the star.

The Oasis singer and guitarist is reported to have splashed out £20,000 on an engagement ring for Sara MacDonald.

But last night, Sara's dad Roderick, who lives in Edinburgh with wife Isobel, said: "I speak to Sara every day and she hasn't mentioned anything about marriage."

A pal of Noel said: "He wants to settle down with Sara. He's absolutely smitten."

Rock icon Jimi Hendrix has been named the world's greatest guitarist by fellow musicians.



The performer - who died nearly 32 years ago after choking on vomit in his sleep - beat British star Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin and Yardbirds fame to the top spot.

Brits make up half the top 10 in the 100-greatest list compiled by a guitar magazine from thousands of votes by readers and celebrities.

Left-hander Hendrix's flamboyant style - which has greatly influenced subsequent generations - was perfected in the clubs of Greenwich village in New York.

But he found fame in the late-sixties after being brought to the UK by former Animals bass player Chas Chandler and building a live reputation with his new band The Jimi Hendrix Experience.

Incendiary tracks such as Purple Haze, Crosstown Traffic and his definitive version of Bob Dylan's All Along The Watchtower followed.

Runner-up Jimmy Page, a session musician before finding fame, shaped cult favourite Stairway To Heaven as well as a string of hippy anthems.

In third place was Eric Clapton, also a veteran of the Yardbirds, who found further fame with Cream before enjoying a long solo career as one of the world's foremost blues players.

Stoke-born Slash, formerly of Guns N' Roses, was fourth, while Queen's Brian May at five and Pink Floyd's Dave Gilmour at eight make up the other Brits in the top ten.

Late Beatles star George Harrison manages just 24th position while Rolling Stone Keith Richards is down at 27.

Other notable entries include The Who's Pete Townshend at 33, Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood at 35, Chuck Berry at 36. Former Smiths star Johnny Marr is at 47, while Oasis's Noel Gallagher is at 50.



The magazine's editor, Scott Rowley, said: "What's nice about it is that it's not some music critic's opinion of the best guitarists - these guys might not be 'cool' by any music critic's viewpoint, but they genuinely are the fastest, loudest, most exciting players in rock and roll."

Not one woman makes it into the entire top 100. Indeed only one woman - Tracy Chapman, whose hits include Fast Car and Talkin'Bout A Revolution - featured in the entire 440 guitarists that were nominated.

Rowley said: "Personally I don't know if it's a bad thing. Women just aren't as geeky or competitive about it as guys. Instead of showing off, they're trying to write a good song. Which is probably smarter."

Brian May was among the big names who voted, choosing Hendrix, another ex-Yardbird Jeff Beck, Clapton, Eddie Van Halen and Harrison for his top five.

Ever since the first British invasion brought Beatlemania to America, England and the US have had a symbiotic pop-music relationship: we’ve exported our African-American musical traditions, and the Brits have spit it all back at us reworked into mainstream pop products. That was true by the end of the ’60s, on up through the punk revolution of the ’70s, and into the MTV-fueled new-wave moves of the ’80s, when stylish pretty boys like Duran Duran became an overnight sensation on these shores. By the ’90s, it seemed as if three decades of pop history had finally been consolidated into the Britpop juggernaut known as Oasis, with their potent mix of Beatlesque melodies, punkish fuck-all attitude, and roguish good looks. And yet, Oasis also stood as a prime example of just how far apart England and the US could be when it came to pop music, since the Noel & Liam show never generated the kind of dominating commercial momentum in the US that it had in their native England.

In that sense, Oasis were simply the latest chapter in an ongoing alternate story of Brit-pop, one that illustrates the vast cultural gulf that opened between the UK and USA in the decades following the Beatles. And though they stand as the latest example of a British pop-success story that never fully translated into a transatlantic triumph, there’s probably no better living embodiment of the considerable differences that exist beneath the surface similarities on the pop charts in the two countries than Paul Weller, the former leader of the Jam and Style Council who’s been racking up Top 10 singles in England for almost three decades without making a dent in the States. Indeed, since 1977, when he emerged as the frontman of the mod-punk Jam, Weller has scored no fewer than 57 Top 40 singles in England, where 26 of the 40 albums that he’s put his name to have likewise ended up in the Top 40. That includes his latest full-length, Illumination, which debuted at #1 on the British charts when it was first released back in September. Although Weller released successful solo albums in England in both 2000 (Heliocentric) and 2001 (Days of Speed), Illumination will be his first release in six long years here in the US when it finally comes out this week, not on any of our major labels but on the tiny, North Carolina-based indie Yep-Roc.

Weller began his rise to his current role in Britain’s rock royalty at the helm of the Jam, a raucous guitar-powered trio who couldn’t help looking like a punk band from these shores, even if their real allegiance lay with the R&B-loving traditions of the suit-and-tied Vespa-riding mods — the same youth movement the rebellious Who had allied themselves with two decades earlier. By the time he’d moved on from the Jam to front the cardigan-clad continental-pop outfit Style Council, Weller had already established himself as one of England’s favorite sons even as he remained almost completely out of step with the American pop mainstream. And that’s been his story ever since, as he’s split the difference between the guitar-fueled rock of the Jam and the moodier, blue-eyed-soul stirrings of the Style Council.

Illumination doesn’t make any concessions toward what’s happened in the realm of American rock over the past few decades. Its touchstones, though rooted in the music of American soul stylists like Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield, are almost completely British in that the only place you’re likely to find Weller’s favorite kind of classic American R&B making a commercial impact in the US these days is as a sampled snippet in a hip-hop production. Weller draws much of his inspiration from the same American sources that have had a much greater direct influence on successful British rockers since the ’70s than on their American counterparts. And it’s all filtered through a British sensibility that encompasses the arch social critique of the feedback-laced anti-gun anthem 'A Bullet for Everyone,' the literate romanticism of the soulful 'Leafy Mysteries,' and the wry, Kinksy, music-hall satire of 'Push Button, Automatic.'

The surprising degree to which Weller has remained relevant in the British rock mainstream is driven home by the young friends in high places who turn up on Illumination — Oasis’s Noel Gallagher and Gem Archer, Steve Cradock and Damon Minchella from Ocean Color Scene, and Kelly Jones from the Stereophonics. But as Weller gears up for his first US tour since 1997 — a tour that will bring him to Avalon on February 21 — it’s hard to ignore the relative difficulty all three of those bands have had in finding an American audience

Yes another chart from the world of music with our lads from Manchester coming in at #5 ! This is what Q has to say about a OASIS live performance :

A trip back to the mid 90’s, with enormous, churning, medium-paced guitar rock and plenty of audience participation. Despite being second only to Bill Wyman as the Most Stationary Member Of A Major Rock Band Ever, Liam Gallagher still exudes star quality, through his four-letter-word-strewn onstage pronouncements, offers of fights for audience/band members and just general attitude.

Meanwhile, behind all this is the real power behind Oasis, Noel Gallagher, who will generally take a solo spot for himself (and on occasion, stand in for his errant brother). Now strengthened by a superior rhythm section in the form of Gem Archer and Andy Bell, the hits may be waning, but the early songs still stand proud, igniting the crowds in a way the newies can never quite top.

There’s always a degree of tension between the siblings that could signal early baths at any moment, but you’ll hear a load of great songs that you know back to front, too.

Oasis are pleased to announce the release of the single ‘Songbird’ on 3rd February 2003 in the UK and internationally. (check out the Oasis mirco sites for international release date details Links). Penned by Liam Gallagher, ‘Songbird’ features on the band’s fifth multi-platinum-selling album ‘Heathen Chemistry’, which was released earlier in 2002. The single also includes a live version of "Columbia" recorded at the Glasgow Barrowlands October 2001 from Oasis’ memorable "Ten Years Of Noise And Confusion" Tour. Formats include CD 12" 7" and DVD

Once again "Songbird" is also available on DVD single including the full electric demo version of "Songbird" plus unique documentary footage of Oasis from behind the scenes including some unseen interview footage with Liam, Noel and the band from throughout 2002 plus live footage from their London Finsbury Park shows.

Calling unsigned talent



The club which helped launch Oasis as global rock stars is looking for the cream of unsigned musical talent to follow in the Gallagher brothers' footsteps.

Budding rock stars have the opportunity to strut their stuff and show their musical talent in the Boddingtons YGG Unsigned show at the Palace nightclub in Levenshulme.

Some of Manchester's most famous bands have played the venue - Badly Drawn Boy, The Smiths and the Doves - and it was the place that launched the Gallagher brothers on the road to superstardom.

The tape the brothers sent in to enter the competition is still kept in the club's musical archives.

The talent search, a highlight of Manchester's Irish Festival, is now one of the UK's biggest showcases and for the winners there is over £1,000 worth of prizes and two days' recording time in a studio.

Heats take place on February 13, 21 and 22 with the final in March. For any band wishing to enter the competition at least one member has to have Irish roots (either parents or grandparents).

Liam Gallagher took his tiny son on a Mini adventure yesterday.

The rock star wrapped up little Gene against the cold for a spin around London.

Oasis singer Liam has a reputation for acting like a big baby, storming off stage on more than one occasion.

But Gene - his son with former All Saint Nicole Appleton - was on his best behaviour. There was no Wonderwailing from the 18-month-old.

And it seems as if Gene's fashion conscious mum, who was doing the driving, also chooses his clothes.

After all, Liam would never be seen dead wearing a hat that sensible. And that's definitely, baby.

If Oasis did not exist, a record company somewhere would have invented them (viz. the Munich hotel brawl). Musically, this is their best offering since (What's the Story) Morning Glory with some raunchy riffs offset by an apparently more mellow Liam Gallagher in evidence on Stop Crying Your Heart Out, Songbird and She Is Love. Don't be fooled, though, they are still the same old rockers on classics like The Hindu Times and (Probably) All In The Mind and on their day no-one can match them.

HE'S renowned for his whiter-than-white image. And we're not talking about his teeth, for which he paid £20,000 to have them straightened, capped and bleached.

So why is cheesy Ronan Keating desperate for nicotine and booze?

The answer is that the 25-year-old Irish crooner wants to "rock up" his image and has turned to the most unlikely pair to launch him into superstardom in the States: Mancunian monkeys Liam and Noel Gallagher.

Ronan - who is more likely to win Eurovision than become a leather-clad rock god - has asked the grim duo if he could do a cover of their hit Cigarettes And Alcohol.

Not surprisingly, he was told to bog off by the Oasis camp.

Our perfectly placed source says: "Ronan is desperate to shake off his mushy ballad image and wanted to make a big impression

"He and his wife Yvonne are planning to spend the next six months in America, where he'll be recording his next album.

"He has co-written many of the tracks with his pal Bryan Adams. But he thought doing an old Oasis cover would really go down well. He is a big fan of Oasis, especially their old stuff. But, sadly, it's not reciprocated." Indeed. There's no love lost between Keating and the brothers.

Last year, "hard man" Liam didn't mince his words about Ronan during Oasis's sell-out concert at Belfast's Odyssey Arena.

He shouted: "This isn't a f*****g Ronan Keating concert, so turn my sound up. Make me sound like Liam Gallagher, not a f*****g queer like him."
Ouch.

Nice Boy's response was predictable. The father of two squealed: "The Gallaghers are two people I don't want to get into a row with. They just need to calm down, especially Liam.

"He needs to stop mouthing off about people. We all work hard - I just can't understand it."

But, sadly for Ronan, he's flogging a dead horse. Our source added: "The Gallaghers were horrified by the idea of Ronan doing a cover. They thought it was a big joke."

WONDER FALL OF BROKE GALLAGHER BROTHER PAUL

The skint older borther of Oasis stars Liam & Noel hops onto a bus - as he copes with debts and living on handouts.
Paul Gallagher, 37, has not worked since losing his high-rolling job as a talent scout for the bands former record label.
He owes £1350 in bills and unpaid council tax and scrapes by on £200 a week handouts from Noel - who is worth £25 million.

SURVIVING
And even though he lives in a house bought by Noel he can't even afford the Gas and electricity bills.
While the wonderwall rockers can travel the world in luxury, our exclusive picture shows Paul taking the bus after getting soaked to the skin in the pouring rain.
A source said "Paul is really down on his luck and needs this cash from Noel just to put food on the table. People might think what Noel is doing for Paul is fantastic but he and Liam are worth a fortune and their older brother is surviving on crumbs being tossed to him.
"Paul is grateful but it's a bit of a sorry state of affairs"
Married Paul used to be a regular on the London party scene as he lived it up with his 2 famous brother Noel, 35, and Liam, 30.
He had been on the dole when the band first hit the big time and said then "I don't get money off Noel & Liam because i don't want it and i don't ask for it". But in 1996 he was hired by Creation records as a £15,000 a year talent scout. He also cashed in on the band's fame by co-writing the book Brothers From Childhood To Oasis, The Real Story.
But when Noel pulled out of Creation, bosses let Paul go, he has not worked since 2001.
Our source revealed: "Paul loved the end of the 90's when he was living it up with the boys.
Mortgage
"The record company job was really up his street and he loved the life it was giving him.
"He was always seen out on the town but it's a different story now. He's getting back on the bus like he was before"
Paul and wife Dawn live in a £275,000 house in Harrow, Middx - bought outright by Noel.
The source added - "Paul doesn't have the burden of a mortgage yet, he can't afford the bills. It shows the pressure he's under but hopefully he can get back on his feet.
"It's just bizzare that such a close family member of one of the most famous rock bands ever is struggling like he is"
